CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary 2028-03-25 - Lent - Double of the First Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Incarnation: the mystery that the eternal Son of God truly took a human nature and became man without ceasing to be God. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. Bishop: a successor of the apostles charged with teaching, sanctifying, and governing a local Church. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Beside Our Lady, learn to persevere beneath the Cross without surrendering truth or hope. Ask Mary, Queen of Martyrs, for constancy. Offer in advance the contradiction, delay, or sorrow that divine Providence may permit. "The more often we do so, the sooner we shall be sanctified, and attain to union with Jesus Christ, which always follows necessarily on our union with Mary, because the spirit of Mary is the spirit of Jesus." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 259 Union with Our Lady is not a resting place apart from Christ. Her whole interior life belongs to Him. She believes His word, receives His will, keeps His mysteries, shares His sacrifice, and desires His glory. A soul formed in her spirit therefore becomes less occupied with itself and more ready for the reign of Jesus. When a cross arrives, resist the habit of watching yourself suffer. Turn instead toward Christ with Mary. Ask not first whether the burden feels bearable, but how it may be carried faithfully, without sin, complaint, or surrender of hope. PRACTICE Show reverence for the Holy Sacrifice in thought, word, and conduct, and pray for souls misled by false worship. QUOTE OF THE DAY "Behold the handmaid of our Lord, be it done to me according to thy word." Holy Scripture, Luke 1:38, Original Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - March 25 The Annunciation of the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God. — At Rome, St. Quirinus, martyr, who after losing his goods, suffering imprisonment in a dark dungeon, and being severely scourged, was put to death with the sword, and thrown into the Tiber. The Christians found his body in the island of St. Bartholomew and buried it in the Pontian cemetery. — In the same city, two hundred and sixty-two holy martyrs. — At Sirmium, the martyrdom of St. Irenaeus, bishop. In the time of the emperor Maximian, under the governor Probus, after undergoing bitter torments, and a painful imprisonment for many days, he was beheaded. — At Nicomedia, St. Dula, the servant of a soldier, who was killed for the preservation of her chastity, and deserved the crown of martyrdom. — At Jerusalem, the commemoration of the good Thief, who confessed Christ on the cross, and deserved to hear from Him these words: "This day thou shalt be with Me in paradise." — At Laodicea, St. Pelagius, bishop, who having endured exile and other afflictions for the Catholic faith under Valens, rested in the Lord. — At Pistoja, the holy confessors Barontius and Desiderius. — In Indre, an island of the Loire, the abbot St. Hermelandus, whose glorious life is attested by signal miracles. GOSPEL OF THE DAY Be it done to me according to thy word. Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Luke 1:26-38 "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word." Do not measure your fidelity by how visible it is. A quiet fiat, made before God and kept through the day, may carry more grace than a thousand admired works. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches The Incarnation begins in Mary's obedient consent, not in the noise of human power. Grace does not destroy humility; it makes humility fruitful beyond all measure. What is said of Our Lady is said analogically of the Church: she receives the word of God, keeps it pure, and bears Christ without mixing Him with error. Error corrected: The modern claim that freedom means self-rule rather than joyful obedience to God. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT The Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary The fiat by which the Word was made flesh. At the Annunciation, Our Lady receives the message of the angel and consents in faith to the Incarnation. Her witness teaches perfect obedience, humility, and surrender to God's will. The life of grace begins not in self-assertion, but in fiat. Do not measure fidelity by visibility. A quiet fiat, made before God and kept through the day, may carry hidden grace. BREVIARY WITNESS The fiat by which the Word was made flesh. Matins - Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary - The Breviary office of the Annunciation contemplates the angel's message and Our Lady's obedient consent. - The mystery teaches that the Incarnation enters history through humility, faith, and fiat. Say yes where God asks today. A hidden fiat may bear more fruit than many visible works. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under The fiat by which the Word was made flesh.. Its first point is this: The Breviary office of the Annunciation contemplates the angel's message and Our Lady's obedient consent. Its next point develops the lesson: The mystery teaches that the Incarnation enters history through humility, faith, and fiat. The practical instruction is: Say yes where God asks today. A hidden fiat may bear more fruit than many visible works. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS The Word takes flesh at Mary's lowly Fiat. Matins - Second Nocturn - Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Pope St. Leo the Great and St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan "The Immortal laid Himself under the laws of death." - The Breviary sets the Annunciation under Isaias, Gabriel, Mary's virginity, and the mystery of the Word made flesh. - Pope St. Leo teaches that the promised Seed of the woman is Christ, God and man in one Person, born of a Virgin to overthrow the serpent and heal the poisoned race of Adam. - St. Ambrose teaches Mary's modesty, faith, and humility: though chosen to be Mother of God, she declares herself the handmaid of the Lord. Let Mary's Fiat teach the whole soul: chastity, listening, fear of God, humble obedience, and exact confession that God truly became man for our salvation. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE True Devotion to Mary Forms the Soul in Christ The Church places this truth before you today: True Marian devotion is not sentiment detached from obedience. It brings the soul more deeply under Christ's rule. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Our Lady does not compete with her Son. She forms servants who hear Him, believe Him, and remain beneath His Cross. The grace to be practiced is Obedient fiat, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's fortitude: quiet, steadfast, and wholly joined to the sacrifice of her Son. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false Marian devotion that seeks comfort, novelty, or emotion without conversion. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing obedient fiat when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Do not seek suffering, but do not flee the cross attached to duty. Unite it to Christ through the Sorrowful Mother. Perform today's difficult act without dramatizing the cost. Let love, not self-observation, measure the offering. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Louis-Marie de Montfort. Your resolution before God: Show reverence for the Holy Sacrifice in thought, word, and conduct, and pray for souls misled by false worship. Carry this word: False worship wounds souls because worship forms belief. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Ask not who said this, but take heed what is said." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 5, p. 14 Truth does not become true through fashion, applause, or a celebrated name. Test what you hear by revelation and the perennial teaching of the Church. Yet à Kempis also rebukes the curiosity that collects authorities without receiving their doctrine. Listen for the truth God is giving through a trustworthy witness, and then permit that truth to correct you. The name of a saint should not become decoration around an unchanged life. Today's Practice: Reject claims based on novelty or popularity and ask what the Church has always taught. DAILY EXAMEN Place every wound and disappointment under Our Lady's mantle. Forgive injuries and ask for grace to remain at the Cross. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, give me holy fear before Thy altar. Preserve me from casualness, invention, and every worship that weakens faith in Thy sacrifice. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Nota de la Iglesia: Holy Defensor: St. Louis-Marie de Montfort Defensa católica: Our Lady does not compete with her Son. She forms servants who hear Him, believe Him, and remain beneath His Cross. Error que resistir: Resist false Marian devotion that seeks comfort, novelty, or emotion without conversion. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Obedient fiat. ORACIÓN O Lord, give me holy fear before Thy altar. Preserve me from casualness, invention, and every worship that weakens faith in Thy sacrifice. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
