CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Second Sunday after Easter 2028-04-30 - Eastertide - Semi-Double Sunday - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Second Sunday after Easter is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Catherine of Siena, Virgin on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. Penance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. With Mary, listen for the command of Christ: Do whatever He shall say to you. Ask for Our Lady's recollection before the noise of the day begins. Let her lead the mind away from distraction and toward the will of her Son. "This devotion consists, then, in giving ourselves entirely to Our Lady, in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 121 True devotion is not measured by the warmth of a feeling or the number of Marian words upon the lips. St. Louis de Montfort speaks of a gift of self. What is placed in Mary's hands must no longer be withheld whenever obedience becomes costly, prayer becomes dry, or duty asks to be preferred to inclination. Do not be frightened by the greatness of this surrender. Our Lady does not impoverish the soul that gives itself to her; she teaches it to cease wasting itself upon vanity and to belong more simply to Jesus. Begin with the next duty, and let your consecration become visible there. PRACTICE Fulfill your ordinary duties promptly and offer them for the glory of God. QUOTE OF THE DAY "But Mary kept all these words, conferring them in her heart." Holy Scripture, Luke 2:19, Original Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - April 30 At Rome, St. Catherine of Siena, virgin, of the Order of St. Dominic, renowned for her life and miracles. She was inscribed among the canonized virgins by Pius II. — At Lambesa, in Numidia, the birthday of the holy martyrs Marian, lector, and James, deacon. The former, after having successfully endured vexations for the confession of Christ, in the persecution of Decius, was again arrested with his illustrious companion, and both being subjected to severe and cruel torments, during which they were twice miraculously comforted from heaven, finally fell by the sword with many others. — At Saintes, blessed Eutropius, bishop and martyr, who was consecrated bishop and sent to Gaul by St. Clement. After preaching for many years, he had his skull crushed for bearing testimony to Christ, and thus gained a victory by his death. — At Cordova, the holy martyrs Amator, priest, Peter, monk, and Lewis. — At Novara, the martyrdom of the holy priest Lawrence, and some boys, whom he was educating. — At Alexandria, the holy martyrs Aphrodisius, priest, and thirty others. — At Ephesus, St. Maximus, martyr, who was crowned in the persecution of Decius. — At Fermo, in the Marches, St. Sophia, virgin and martyr. — At Naples, in Campania, St. Severus, bishop, who, among other prodigies, raised for a short time a dead man from the grave, in order to convict of falsehood the lying creditor of a widow and her children. — At Evorea, in Epirus, St. Donatus, a bishop, who was eminent for sanctity in the time of the emperor Theodosius. — At London, in England, St. Erconwald, a bishop celebrated for many miracles. GOSPEL OF THE DAY I am the good shepherd. Second Sunday after Easter - John 10:11-16 "The good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep." Let yourself be shepherded. The sheep is not safe by being clever, but by staying near the voice that gave itself for him. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Christ shepherds by sacrifice, not by hireling self-preservation. The sheep know His voice and are gathered into one fold. Error corrected: The hireling spirit that abandons souls when fidelity becomes costly. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT Second Sunday after Easter The Good Shepherd knows His sheep. The Second Sunday after Easter places the faithful under Christ the Good Shepherd, who lays down His life for the sheep. The day teaches that the Church is not a crowd gathered by feeling, but a flock held by the voice, sacrifice, and authority of the Shepherd. In exile, do not confuse isolation with fidelity. The sheep live by knowing the Shepherd's voice and staying within His truth. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE St. Catherine of Siena Virgin, penitent, and fearless servant of the Church. St. Catherine of Siena joined prayer, penance, charity, and bold speech for the good of the Church. Her witness shows that love for the Church does not mean silence before disorder. True charity prays, suffers, speaks truth, and seeks reform without losing obedience to God. Let St. Catherine teach boldness that is first purified by prayer and penance. True reform begins on the knees. If you must speak today, speak after prayer, and speak for the good of the soul before you. BREVIARY WITNESS The Good Shepherd lays down His life. Matins - Second Sunday after Easter - The office of the Second Sunday after Easter contemplates Christ as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and gives His life for them. - Its witness teaches that the flock is gathered by sacrifice, voice, doctrine, and authority; the sheep are safe by hearing and following Him. Do not wander under the name of freedom. The sheep live by the Shepherd's voice, especially when many strange voices call. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Second Sunday after Easter is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under The Good Shepherd lays down His life.. Its first point is this: The office of the Second Sunday after Easter contemplates Christ as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and gives His life for them. Its next point develops the lesson: Its witness teaches that the flock is gathered by sacrifice, voice, doctrine, and authority; the sheep are safe by hearing and following Him. The practical instruction is: Do not wander under the name of freedom. The sheep live by the Shepherd's voice, especially when many strange voices call. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS The Good Shepherd and the hireling exposed. Matins - Third Nocturn - Second Sunday after Easter Pope St. Gregory the Great "The Good Shepherd gave His life for the sheep." - The Breviary contemplates Christ as the Good Shepherd, who knows His sheep, gives His life for them, and feeds them with His own Body and Blood. - St. Gregory teaches that the shepherd must first spend outward goods for the sheep and, if need be, give even his life for them. - The hireling is exposed by love of earthly gain, comfort, precedence, and safety more than the salvation of souls. Learn the difference between shepherding and religious employment. The mark of the true shepherd is costly charity for souls, patterned after Christ who laid down His life. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church places this truth before you today: The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. The grace to be practiced is Docility to the Good Shepherd, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's obedience. Catholic obedience hears God first, receives the truth whole, and refuses every command that would require sin or betrayal of the Faith. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing docility to the Good Shepherd when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When the duty is difficult, make Mary's fiat your own: accept God's will without bargaining, while using every lawful means duty requires. Begin this act with the aspiration, 'Jesus, living in Mary, live and reign in me.' Then perform it faithfully. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Robert Bellarmine. Your resolution before God: Fulfill your ordinary duties promptly and offer them for the glory of God. Carry this word: Grace is guarded by ordinary fidelity. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Fight strongly therefore against all sins, and dread not overmuch, although thou be encumbered by an evil custom, for that evil custom may be overcome with a good custom." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 21, p. 35 Habit is formed by repeated consent. Under grace, a small faithful act repeated daily becomes a defense against the sin that once seemed immovable. Do not wait for a dramatic conversion of temperament. Grace commonly asks for the next contrary act: silence instead of complaint, custody instead of curiosity, prayer instead of brooding, prompt duty instead of delay. Repeated fidelity clears a path by which the will learns to move more readily toward God. Today's Practice: Oppose your recurring bad habit with its contrary good acts throughout the day. DAILY EXAMEN Examine whether you obeyed Christ promptly or delayed through self-will. Entrust repentance and amendment to Our Lady. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, strengthen the little duties of this day with Thy grace, that nothing entrusted to me may be wasted through negligence or vanity. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Su primer punto es: The office of the Second Sunday after Easter contemplates Christ as the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep and gives His life for them. VERDAD DE LA FE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Nota de la Iglesia: One Defensor: St. Robert Bellarmine Defensa católica: The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. Error que resistir: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Docility to the Good Shepherd. La virtud de hoy es Docility to the Good Shepherd.. ORACIÓN O Lord, strengthen the little duties of this day with Thy grace, that nothing entrusted to me may be wasted through negligence or vanity. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
