CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Pius V, Pope and Confessor 2028-05-05 - Eastertide - Double - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Cardinal: a senior cleric of the Roman Church who advises the pope and, under the Church's law, ordinarily helps elect a successor. Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Confessor: in the traditional calendar, a male saint who openly professed the Faith by a holy life but was not killed as a martyr. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Through Mary to Jesus: receive grace humbly, answer it faithfully, and give the glory to God. Acknowledge that God is the source of every grace and has freely willed that His graces should come to us through the hands of Our Blessed Mother. Ask her to obtain the help needed to serve her Son today. "It is not that we take her for the last end of our services, for that is Jesus Christ alone; but we take her for our proximate end, our mysterious means and our easy way to go to Him." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 265 Here St. Louis de Montfort guards true devotion from every distortion: Jesus Christ alone is the end. Mary never asks the soul to stop with her. Like her word at Cana, her maternal office is a continual direction toward obedience: do whatsoever He shall say to you. Let this give you both confidence and order. You need not approach the duties of grace as an orphan relying upon personal strength. Go to Jesus beside the Mother He gave you, but go prepared to hear Him, to renounce sin, to receive Catholic truth whole, and to obey. OCTAVE CONTEXT Within the Common Octave of the Solemnity of St. Joseph - Common Octave PRACTICE Prepare for Mass or prayer with greater recollection, and correct casual habits around holy things. QUOTE OF THE DAY "He Who reigns on high has entrusted His Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church to Peter and to Peter's successor." Pope St. Pius V ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - May 5 At Rome, pope St. Pius V., of the Order of Preachers, who labored zealously and successfully for the re-establishment of ecclesiastical discipline, the extirpation of heresies, the destruction of the enemies of the Christian name, and governed the Catholic Church by holy laws and the example of a saintly life. — Also at Rome, St. Crescentiana, martyr. — In the same city, St. Sylvanus, martyr. — At Alexandria, St. Euthymius, deacon, who died in prison for Christ. — At Thessalonica, the birthday of the holy martyrs Irenseus, Peregrinus and Irenes, who were burned alive. — At Auxerre, the martyrdom of St. Jovinian, lector. — At Leocata, in Sicily, St. Angelus, a priest of the Order of Carmelites, who was murdered by the heretics for defending the Catholic faith. — At Jerusalem, St. Maximus, bishop and confessor, whom the Ca3sar Maximian Galerius condemned to work in the mines, after having plucked out one of his eyes and branded him on the foot with hot iron. — At Edessa, in Syria, St. Eulogius, bishop and confessor. — At Aries, in France, St. Hilary, bishop, noted for his learning and holiness. — At Vienne, the bishop St. N icetus, a man venerable for his sanctity. — At Bologna, St. Theodore, a bishop who was eminent for merits. — The same day, St. Sacerdos, bishop of Saguntum. — At Milan, St. Geruntius, bishop. — In the same city, the conversion of St. Augustine, bishop and doctor of the Church, whom the blessed bishop Ambrose instructed in the Catholic faith, and baptized on this day. HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. Pius V Pope, reformer, and guardian of Catholic worship. St. Pius V served the Church by reforming discipline, guarding doctrine, and defending the sacred liturgy in a time of grave trial. His witness joins prayer, penance, papal authority, and public defense of Christendom. He shows that reform is Catholic only when it preserves and strengthens what the Church has received. Let St. Pius V teach reform without novelty. Catholic renewal begins by protecting doctrine, worship, discipline, and prayer. Do not call a rupture reform because it speaks in religious language. BREVIARY WITNESS A pope of reform, worship, and defense. Matins - St. Pius V - The Breviary honors St. Pius V as pope and confessor, a guardian of discipline, doctrine, and Catholic worship. - His witness teaches reform as preservation and strengthening of what the Church has received. Reject novelty disguised as reform. St. Pius V teaches that Catholic renewal defends inheritance and orders souls toward God. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for St. Pius V is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under A pope of reform, worship, and defense.. Its first point is this: The Breviary honors St. Pius V as pope and confessor, a guardian of discipline, doctrine, and Catholic worship. Its next point develops the lesson: His witness teaches reform as preservation and strengthening of what the Church has received. The practical instruction is: Reject novelty disguised as reform. St. Pius V teaches that Catholic renewal defends inheritance and orders souls toward God. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? FROM MATINS Discipline restored and error resisted. Matins - Second Nocturn - St. Pius V, Pope and Confessor Roman Breviary "The restoration of the Discipline of the Church, of unwearied toil." - The Breviary presents St. Pius V as a Dominican formed by prayer, lowliness, learning, austerity, preaching, and zeal for the exact observance of religious rule. - As bishop, cardinal, and pope he labored for Catholic worship, ecclesiastical discipline, the uprooting of error, the poor, and the rights of the Apostolic See. - At Lepanto his victory was attributed not chiefly to arms but to prayer, and the office joins his public defense of Christendom to patience in suffering and peace at death. True reform restores worship, discipline, doctrine, and mercy together. St. Pius V teaches that zeal must pray, govern, correct, defend, and suffer. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Sacrifice of the Mass Is the Heart of Catholic Worship The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic worship is centered on the true Sacrifice of the altar, offered by the priest in union with Christ the eternal High Priest. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The same sacrificial worship belongs to the Church throughout the world; it is not a local invention or a merely human assembly rite. The grace to be practiced is Reform that preserves what the Church received, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's gratitude. Magnify the Lord for His gifts instead of turning them into a reason for self-esteem. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist every reduction of the Mass to a memorial meal, community symbol, or religious performance. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing reform that preserves what the Church received when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When consolation is absent, trust the order of divine Providence. Our Lady remains a Mother in darkness as surely as in joy. Give thanks before beginning, ask Mary's help while working, and return the completed act to Jesus without claiming it as your own. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Council of Trent. Your resolution before God: Prepare for Mass or prayer with greater recollection, and correct casual habits around holy things. Carry this word: Catholic reform restores discipline, corrects error, and guards received worship. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Regard not much who is with thee, nor who is against thee, but be this thy greatest study, that God may be with thee." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book II, chapter 2, p. 55 Human approval is a poor compass. With Mary, seek first to be faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church, whether praise follows or not. The desire to be supported can subtly alter judgment before you notice it. It softens a necessary word, delays a duty, or makes loneliness appear to be proof that fidelity was mistaken. Examine the act by Catholic truth and your real obligations; then leave the company or opposition of men in God's hands. Today's Practice: Perform right acts without checking whether anyone noticed. DAILY EXAMEN Make your Magnificat in little: name God's mercies, diminish self, and entrust tomorrow to the Mother He has given you. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O God, through St. Pius V, give Thy faithful love for the Mass, courage against error, and humility to accept the discipline that protects souls. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Error que resistir: Resist every reduction of the Mass to a memorial meal, community symbol, or religious performance. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Reform that preserves what the Church received. La virtud de hoy es Reform that preserves what the Church received.. Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Pray for the defense of the Church against error and false worship. - ¿Dónde será probada esta virtud en mis deberes reales de hoy? - ¿Qué mera apariencia natural podría confundir con la virtud misma? - ¿Qué acto concreto realizaré antes de la noche? ORACIÓN O God, through St. Pius V, give Thy faithful love for the Mass, courage against error, and humility to accept the discipline that protects souls. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
