CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Fourth Sunday after Easter 2028-05-14 - Eastertide - Semi-Double Sunday - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Fourth Sunday after Easter is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Boniface, Martyr on this date. The secondary observance remains part of the calendar context for the date. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Tract: in a source title, a written commentary or treatise; in the Mass, the same word can name a solemn chant sung in place of the Alleluia during penitential seasons. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Receive the Catholic inheritance of love for Our Lady with gratitude and without embarrassment. Consecrate the place and persons entrusted to your duty to Jesus through Mary. "The whole earth is full of her glory, especially among Christians, by whom she is taken as the protectress of many kingdoms, provinces, dioceses and cities." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 9 The public honor once offered to Our Lady reminds the soul that religion is not meant to be hidden as a private preference. Christian peoples placed homes, cities, and kingdoms beneath her protection because they understood that Christ's reign concerns the whole order of life. You may not govern a kingdom, but some portion of the City has been entrusted to you: a room, a household duty, a conversation, a child, a suffering soul, or the custody of your own senses. Place that territory under Our Lady today, then remove from it whatever is unworthy of her Divine Son. PRACTICE Pray for family members and friends. Love them sincerely, but do not pretend the truth is less serious just to keep peace. Having by his preaching and his zeal converted to the faith of Christ the two Caesars Philip, he obtained the palm of martyrdom under the emperors Valerian and Gallienus. — In Syria, the holy martyrs Victor and Corona, under the emperor Antoninus. Ask the Holy Ghost to make truth lovable. He does not humiliate the soul by correction; He frees it from illusions. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches The Holy Ghost leads the Church into truth, not into novelty against Christ. He convinces the world of sin, justice, and judgment. Error corrected: The false spirituality that opposes inner feeling to revealed truth. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. Boniface Martyr whose witness was crowned after conversion. St. Boniface is honored on this day as a martyr, distinct from the missionary bishop St. Boniface kept in June. His feast teaches that grace can reclaim a disordered life and make it courageous for Christ. The past does not have to be the master of the soul when repentance becomes real. Ask St. Boniface for conversion that does not stop halfway. Grace can make a repentant soul braver than it ever was in sin. FROM MATINS The Comforter promised for the hour of witness. Matins - Third Nocturn - Fourth Sunday after Easter St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo "His visible Presence was then their sufficient Comfort." - The Breviary hears Christ tell the disciples that He goes to Him who sent Him and promises the Comforter. - St. Augustine explains that the Lord had already foretold persecutions, but now speaks especially of the Paraclete who will be needed when His visible presence is withdrawn. - The Holy Ghost strengthens the Church to bear witness under suffering, not by replacing Christ, but by testifying to Him. Do not mistake the loss of visible consolations for abandonment. Christ sends the Comforter so that witness may remain firm when the world presses and the soul feels alone. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Christ Is King Over Public Life The Church places this truth before you today: Our Lord's kingship is not confined to private devotion. Men, families, laws, and nations are subject to His authority. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church's Catholicity includes the public claim of Christ over all peoples, not merely the private consolation of believers. The grace to be practiced is Repentance crowned by courage, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice stewardship under God: receive what is entrusted, guard it from corruption, and order it toward Christ. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing repentance crowned by courage when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the responsibility of protection without becoming controlling; authority remains a service beneath God. Restore order to the part of the home or daily work now before you, and offer the whole of your household duties to Jesus through Mary. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Pray for family members and friends. Love them sincerely, but do not pretend the truth is less serious just to keep peace. Carry this word: Family peace cannot be purchased by surrendering the Faith. Heresy must be hated, and so must the pride, curiosity, compromise, and self-will by which falsehood finds lodging in the soul. Many souls desire victory in the Church while making peace with the tyrant within. Begin the restoration where grace has placed authority in your hands: over your next thought, word, appetite, and decision. A hidden victory over self-will is no small service to the City of God. Today's Practice: Refuse the demands of self-will promptly and without complaint. DAILY EXAMEN Ask whether the portion entrusted to you was more peaceful, pure, truthful, and prayerful because of your presence. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, make me patient in household division, firm without cruelty, and charitable without compromise. Let peace be made beneath truth, not against it. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
