CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Ascension of Our Lord 2028-05-25 - Eastertide - Double of the First Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ascension of Our Lord is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Gregory VII, Pope and Confessor on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Ascension: Christ's return to the Father in His glorified humanity forty days after the Resurrection. Clergy or cleric: the Church's ordained ministers; a cleric is a deacon, priest, or bishop. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Through Mary to Jesus: receive grace humbly, answer it faithfully, and give the glory to God. Acknowledge that God is the source of every grace and has freely willed that His graces should come to us through the hands of Our Blessed Mother. Ask her to obtain the help needed to serve her Son today. "It is not that we take her for the last end of our services, for that is Jesus Christ alone; but we take her for our proximate end, our mysterious means and our easy way to go to Him." Mary never asks the soul to stop with her. Like her word at Cana, her maternal office is a continual direction toward obedience: do whatsoever He shall say to you. Let this give you both confidence and order. You need not approach the duties of grace as an orphan relying upon personal strength. Go to Jesus beside the Mother He gave you, but go prepared to hear Him, to renounce sin, to receive Catholic truth whole, and to obey. PRACTICE Read Acts 1:1-11. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Christ ascends as King and sends the apostles with a universal mission. Faith is not private consolation only; it must be confessed, taught, and guarded. Error corrected: The retreat that calls itself prudence while hiding the faith. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT Ascension of Our Lord The King ascends and sends His Church. On Ascension Day, Our Lord is taken up into Heaven after commanding the apostles to preach the Gospel to every creature. The feast teaches both triumph and mission: Christ reigns at the right hand of the Father, and His Church must confess His doctrine, administer His sacraments, and live in hope of His return. Look upward without abandoning duty. The ascended Christ rules, intercedes, and sends His Church into the world with divine authority. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE St. Gregory VII Pope and confessor who defended the freedom of the Church. St. Gregory VII, the monk Hildebrand raised to the papacy, labored for reform in an age wounded by simony, clerical disorder, and worldly control over sacred office. He defended the liberty of the Church against rulers who wanted holy things treated as possessions of power. His fidelity brought suffering, opposition, and exile. Ask St. Gregory VII for courage to keep holy things free for God. The Church is not served by surrendering her liberty to comfort, rulers, donors, families, or fear. BREVIARY WITNESS He was taken up into Heaven. Instruction from the Breviary The Breviary witness for Ascension of Our Lord is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Today's witness is gathered under He was taken up into Heaven.. Its first point is this: The Ascension office contemplates Our Lord taken up into Heaven after entrusting the apostolic mission to His Church. Its next point develops the lesson: Its witness joins royal triumph to command: Christ reigns at the right hand of the Father, and the Gospel must be preached with the authority He gave. The practical instruction is: Look to Heaven without weakening duty on earth. The ascended King still commands, governs, intercedes, and sends. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over. - What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend? - What virtue does the Church place before me through it? - What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson? Matins - Second Nocturn - Ascension of Our Lord Pope St. Leo the Great "The Ascension of Christ is exaltation for us." - The Breviary keeps the fortieth day after Easter as the crown of the forty days in which Christ confirmed the reality of His Resurrection. - St. Leo teaches that the Ascension is not Christ's departure from concern for His members, but the exaltation of the Manhood He took from us. - Where the Head has gone in glory, the hope of the Body is summoned to follow; Paradise is made sure because Christ has entered as our Head. Lift the mind where Christ has gone. The Ascension teaches the soul to live on earth without making earth its home, because our Head reigns above. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Doctrine Develops Without Becoming Another Doctrine The Church places this truth before you today: True growth in Catholic doctrine preserves the same meaning and the same judgment; it unfolds what was received, without changing the faith into a novelty. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Unity of faith is protected when later expression remains identical in substance with what the Church has always taught. The grace to be practiced is Heavenly hope and apostolic obedience, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's gratitude. Magnify the Lord for His gifts instead of turning them into a reason for self-esteem. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the modernist notion that dogma may change its meaning according to the religious needs of an age. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing heavenly hope and apostolic obedience when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When consolation is absent, trust the order of divine Providence. Our Lady remains a Mother in darkness as surely as in joy. Give thanks before beginning, ask Mary's help while working, and return the completed act to Jesus without claiming it as your own. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Vincent of Lerins. Your resolution before God: Read Acts 1:1-11. Then begin repairing your known neglected duties in their proper order, in obedience to the King who reigns in Heaven. Carry this word: Christ's Ascension directs hope toward Heaven without releasing us from duty on earth. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "In silence and quietness of heart a devout soul profiteth much and learneth the hidden sentences of Scripture." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 20, p. 33 Holy silence is not the absence of sound alone. A room may be quiet while the mind repeats injuries, imagines arguments, and pursues every rumor. À Kempis asks for quietness of heart: the recollection in which the soul stops scattering itself and becomes able to receive what God has already spoken. Give Scripture a little protected ground today. Read a few verses slowly, preferably from the day's Gospel, and resist the urge to hurry toward commentary or novelty. Ask what God reveals, what He commands, and what response must be made before the words are allowed to pass. Today's Practice: Keep ten quiet minutes with the day's Gospel, asking what truths it teaches and what commands require your obedience. DAILY EXAMEN Make your Magnificat in little: name God's mercies, diminish self, and entrust tomorrow to the Mother He has given you. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O ascended Lord, lift my mind toward Heaven and keep my hands faithful to the work Thou hast given me. Make me obey Thy commands while I await eternal life with Thee. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
