CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Tuesday within the Octave of Pentecost 2028-06-06 - Eastertide - Double of the First Class - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Tuesday within the Octave of Pentecost is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Norbert, Bishop and Confessor on this date. The Breviary witness and Breviary sermon or lesson panels below come from that secondary observance. Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Afterwards, while living at the imperial court, he rejected the enticements of the world and desired to be enrolled in the ecclesiastical service. Having received sacred orders, he cast aside soft and splendid garments, clothed himself in a sheepskin, and devoted himself wholly to preaching the word of God. He ate only once a day toward evening and then only Lenten food, walking barefoot and in a torn garment even in the winter cold. Thus he entered upon the austerity of penance. Powerful in deed and word, he brought innumerable souls to the Faith, recalled sinners to penance, and restored those at variance to peace and concord. Fifth Lesson - Premontre and a Rule Confirmed by the Church When he was at Laon, the bishop asked him not to leave his diocese. He chose there a deserted place called Premontre and, gathering thirteen companions, instituted the Premonstratensian Order according to the rule divinely received in a vision from St. Augustine. As the fame of his holiness increased daily and many disciples came to him, the same order was confirmed by Pope Honorius II and other Supreme Pontiffs and was wonderfully spread by him through many monasteries. Sixth Lesson - Heresy, Schism, and Ecclesiastical Discipline Coming to Antwerp, he destroyed in that city the wicked heresy of Tanchelm. He shone by the prophetic spirit and by miracles. Afterwards he was created Archbishop of Magdeburg against his will, and he steadfastly defended ecclesiastical discipline, especially clerical celibacy. At the Council of Rheims he gave distinguished aid to Pope Innocent II, and, going to Rome with other bishops, he suppressed the schism of Peter Leonis. At Magdeburg he fell asleep in the Lord, full of the Holy Ghost and renowned for merits, in the year of salvation 1134, on the sixth day of June. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Faith Must Be Confessed Publicly The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic faith is not a private sentiment. It must be confessed, defended, and lived before men when duty requires it. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church is sent to all nations. Her public confession cannot be reduced to hidden feeling or private preference. The grace to be practiced is Reforming discipline under worship, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice ecclesial charity by guarding the Faith, avoiding scandal, bearing others' burdens, and seeking the salvation of souls. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist cowardly peace when silence would imply consent to error. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing reforming discipline under worship when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Suffer with Christ and His members without withdrawing into isolation, bitterness, or indifference to the needs of the Church. Honor your place in the Mystical Body through faithful prayer, worthy sacramental life, complete duty, reparation, and service of souls. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is St. Athanasius. Your resolution before God: Pray for priestly holiness and return disorders in your own rule of life to prayerful discipline. Put the day's lesser goods beneath the one necessary end. Vanity does not always announce itself through great ambition. Ask God to show you the attachment that is quietly asking to be treated as necessary. Today's Practice: Renounce needless comforts whenever they compete with prayer, duty, or charity, and offer the sacrifices to God through Mary. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
