CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
Most Precious Blood of Our Lord
2028-07-01 - Time after Pentecost - Double of the Second Class - red
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion.
Reparation: prayer or sacrifice offered in love to make amends for sin and the dishonor it gives to God.
Sacramental: connected with the sacraments, the visible rites instituted by Christ to give grace.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
The feast of the Most Precious Blood places the price of redemption before the soul. Christ's Blood makes sin hateful without making the repentant sinner despair; it calls the pilgrim to gratitude, reparation, reverent worship, and serious love for souls bought so dearly. Ask the Father to make you a living member of Christ beneath the maternal care of Mary. Renew your baptismal renunciation of Satan and your belonging to Jesus Christ, asking His Mother to guard that supernatural life.

"God the Father has communicated to Mary His fruitfulness, as far as a mere creature was capable of it, in order that He might give her the power to produce His Son, and all the members of His mystical Body."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 17

Our Lady's divine maternity is unique: she is Mother of the Incarnate Head according to His human nature. Her maternal office toward His members belongs to the order of grace. She does not replace baptism, faith, or the sacraments; she serves the supernatural life by which Christ forms His members.

To live as her child is therefore to live as a member of Christ. Refuse every devotion that leaves conduct unchanged. Ask Mary to protect the life of grace, obtain repentance after sin, and form in you the likeness of the Head to whom the whole Mystical Body belongs.

OCTAVE CONTEXT
Within the Common Octave of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist - Common Octave

PRACTICE
Give thanks for the Precious Blood and offer today's inconveniences in reparation for irreverence and sin.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"You were not redeemed with corruptible things as gold or silver, but with the precious blood of Christ."
St. Peter, 1 Peter 1:18-19, Douay-Rheims

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - July 1
The Octave of St. John the Baptist. — Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ. — On Mount Hor, the demise of St. Aaron, the first priest of the Levitical Order. — In England, the holy martyrs Julius and Aaron, who suffered after St. Alban, in the persecution of Diocletian. In the same country, a great number being at that time tortured in different manners and barbarously lacerated, ended their combat, and attained to the joys of the heavenly city. — At Mechlin, the martyrdom of St. Rumold, son of an Irish king, and bishop of Dublin. — At Sinuessa, the holy martyrs Castus and Secundinus, bishops. — At Vienne, St. Martin, bishop and disciple of the Apostles. — At Clermont, in Auvergne, St. Gal, bishop. — In the diocese of Lyons, the decease of St. Domitian, abbot, who was the first to lead there an eremitical life. After having assembled in that place many servants of God, and gained great renown for virtues and miracles, he was gathered to his fathers at an advanced age. — In the diocese of Rheims, St. Theodoric, priest and disciple of the blessed bishop Remigius. — At Angouleme, St. Eparchius, abbot. — At Emesa, St. Simeon, surnamed Salus, confessor, who feigned to be an idiot for Christ; but God manifested his high wisdom by great miracles. — At Vicenza, the demise of St. Theobald, of the Counts of Campania, hermit, who was added to the number of the saints by Alexander III. on account of his holiness and miracles.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
There came out blood and water.
Most Precious Blood of Our Lord - John 19:30-35
"One of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water."
Look at the Blood of Christ without fear. It does not accuse the repentant soul; it pleads for it.

THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL
What This Gospel Teaches
The Precious Blood is the price of redemption, poured from the opened side of Christ.
The Church beholds in the Passion the source of cleansing, sacrifice, and sacramental life.
Error corrected: The casual mercy that forgets what sin cost.
- Where does this error tempt me in practice?
- What act does this Gospel require of me today?

HIGHLIGHTED SAINT
The Most Precious Blood of Our Lord
The price of souls and the ransom of the Church.
The feast of the Most Precious Blood sets the Roman year before the Blood of Christ as the price of redemption.
The Martyrology keeps the feast on July 1, placing the day beneath the mystery of ransom, sacrifice, and the Blood poured out for souls.
Begin July by remembering that the Church lives from the Blood of Christ. Let this day make sin hateful, mercy costly, and worship grave.
BREVIARY WITNESS
The Blood by which the Church is ransomed.
Matins - Most Precious Blood of Our Lord
- The Roman Breviary keeps this feast as a public school of ransom, sacrifice, and thanksgiving before the Blood of Christ.
- The office directs the soul to contemplate redemption as costly and objective, not as a vague language of mercy detached from the altar and the Cross.
Let the Breviary form a Catholic instinct for holy fear. A people redeemed by Blood must not speak cheaply about sin, worship, confession, or souls.
Instruction from the Breviary
The Breviary witness for Most Precious Blood of Our Lord is part of the Church's daily teaching. It should not be read as a list of isolated facts. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live.
Today's witness is gathered under The Blood by which the Church is ransomed.. Its first point is this: The Roman Breviary keeps this feast as a public school of ransom, sacrifice, and thanksgiving before the Blood of Christ. Its next point develops the lesson: The office directs the soul to contemplate redemption as costly and objective, not as a vague language of mercy detached from the altar and the Cross.
The practical instruction is: Let the Breviary form a Catholic instinct for holy fear. A people redeemed by Blood must not speak cheaply about sin, worship, confession, or souls. Ask what truth is being guarded, what virtue is being praised, and what danger or forgetfulness is being corrected. In this way the Breviary becomes instruction for the present day rather than information that is quickly passed over.
- What truth does this Breviary witness teach or defend?
- What virtue does the Church place before me through it?
- What judgment or action should change because I have received this lesson?

FROM MATINS
The Blood from the Heart of Christ and the price of the world.
Matins - Second Nocturn - Most Precious Blood of Our Lord
St. John Chrysostom, Patriarch of Constantinople
"How shall not the enemy quail before the Reality?"
- The Breviary keeps the Most Precious Blood by setting the true Blood of Christ against the old Paschal type.
- St. John Chrysostom teaches that the blood of the lamb saved by figure, while the Blood flowing from Christ's pierced Heart is the reality before which the destroyer flees.
- The Blood and Water from the side of Christ reveal Baptism, the Sacrament of the Altar, and the founding of the Church from the side of the Second Adam.
Measure souls by the price paid for them. The Blood of Christ rebukes cheap religion, careless sin, and every habit that treats redemption as a small thing.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
Christ Is King Over Public Life
The Church places this truth before you today: Our Lord's kingship is not confined to private devotion. Men, families, laws, and nations are subject to His authority. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church's Catholicity includes the public claim of Christ over all peoples, not merely the private consolation of believers.
The grace to be practiced is Reverent gratitude for redemption, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice fidelity to grace by resisting every mortal sin and promptly correcting deliberate venial sin.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing reverent gratitude for redemption when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the discipline by which Christ conforms His members to the crucified Head. Fulfill all the duties of your state as a member of Christ whose conduct must honor the whole Mystical Body.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI.
Your resolution before God: Give thanks for the Precious Blood and offer today's inconveniences in reparation for irreverence and sin.
Carry this word: The price of redemption measures the gravity of sin and the worth of every soul.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"Wherefore, if we will have the true understanding of Christ's Gospels, we must study to conform our life to His life as nigh as we can."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 1, p. 9
The Gospel is not given only to inform the mind. Grace asks that the life of Christ become visible throughout your conduct today, with particular attention to the virtue shown in the appointed mystery.

It is possible to admire Our Lord while quietly refusing His manner of life. Ask where He is inviting you to become more patient, hidden, truthful, obedient, or forgiving. Conformity begins when admiration accepts a cost.
Today's Practice: Before today's decisions, ask: How does fidelity to Christ govern this?
DAILY EXAMEN
Examine whether your conduct preserved the likeness of Christ or wounded His members, and seek contrition and amendment through Mary.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord Jesus Christ, by Thy Precious Blood cleanse me, make me grateful, and teach me to treat worship, mercy, and souls with holy seriousness.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Reverent gratitude for redemption.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Thank Our Lord for the price of redemption.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Make reparation for sacrilege and irreverence.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Treat confession, Mass, and souls as things bought dearly.
