CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Pius I, Pope and Martyr 2028-07-11 - Time after Pentecost - Simple - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR St. Pius I stands in the early Roman succession as pope and martyr. His feast reminds the pilgrim that the Faith is not a private possession or invisible fellowship: Christ founded a visible, governed, apostolic Church whose shepherds were called to guard doctrine and suffer for Him. Contemplate the glorified Jesus as true God and true Man, eternally the Son of the Father and forever the Son of Mary according to His sacred humanity. Honor Jesus Christ as Mary's divine Son and ask her to make your will obedient to His in all things. "Inasmuch as grace perfects nature, and glory perfects grace, it is certain that our Lord is still, in heaven, as much the Son of Mary as He was on earth; and that, consequently, He has preserved the most perfect obedience and submission of all children towards the best of all mothers." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 27 The Incarnation was not temporary. Jesus Christ reigns in heaven with the same sacred humanity He received from Our Lady. Yet St. Louis de Montfort immediately guards the truth: Mary is infinitely below her divine Son, and her will is perfectly conformed to the eternal and immutable will of God. Our Lady's intercession can therefore never oppose, correct, or replace Christ's sovereign will. Go to her with confidence because she belongs wholly to Him. Ask her to purify your petitions, obtain what serves salvation, and teach you the filial obedience by which Jesus was subject to her at Nazareth. PRACTICE Pray for fidelity to the apostolic Church and reject every habit of treating religion as private preference. QUOTE OF THE DAY "But to the called Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God." Holy Scripture, 1 Corinthians 1:24, Original Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - July 11 At Rome, the blessed Pius, pope and martyr, who was crowned with martyrdom in the persecution of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. — At Mcopolis, in Armenia, the birthday of the holy martyrs Januarius and Pelagia, who for four days were racked, torn with iron claws and pieces of earthenware, and thus achieved their martyrdom. — In the territory of Sens, St. Sidronius, martyr. — At Iconium, St. Marcian, martyr, who obtained the palm of martyrdom by many torments, under the governor Perennius. — At Sida, in Pamphylia, St. Cindeus, priest, in the time of the emperor Diocletian and the governor Stratonicus. After suffering many torments, he was thrown into the fire, but remaining uninjured, he yielded up his soul in prayer. — At Brescia, the holy martyrs Savinus and Cyprian. — At Bergamo, St. John, a bishop, who was killed by the Arians for defending the Catholic faith. — At Cordova, St. Abundius, a priest, crowned with martyrdom whilst preaching against the sect of Mahomet. — In the territory of Poitiers, St. Sabinus, confessor. HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. Pius I Pope and martyr in the early Roman succession. St. Pius I is honored as pope and martyr in the Roman calendar. His feast recalls the early bishops of Rome, who preserved the apostles' teaching, governed the faithful as pastors, and suffered death rather than deny Christ. Ask St. Pius I for a Catholic instinct about the Church. The faith is not merely believed privately; it is received in the visible apostolic Church Christ founded. FROM MATINS The Roman pontiff crowned with martyrdom. Martyrology - Martyrology Notice - St. Pius I, Pope and Martyr Roman Martyrology "At Rome, the blessed Pius, pope and martyr, who was crowned with martyrdom in the persecution of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus." - The traditional Martyrology remembers St. Pius I with a brief and restrained notice: Rome, the sovereign pastoral office, persecution, and the crown of martyrdom. - His commemoration joins the visible succession of Roman pontiffs to suffering for Christ. The Church's order is not a private religious preference, and ecclesiastical office is not worldly possession. - Because the authorized notice supplies no further particulars, Catholic memory should honor what is known without turning later conjecture into established history. Ask St. Pius I for fidelity to Christ's visible and apostolic Church. Love the Roman office as Christ established it, and measure every claimant and command by the Catholic faith that office exists to guard. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church places this truth before you today: The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. The grace to be practiced is Early Roman apostolic fidelity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice filial obedience by receiving every lawful command promptly, reverently, and without self-willed reservation. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing early Roman apostolic fidelity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the humiliation of dependence and correction after the example of the Incarnate Word, who freely chose a hidden and obedient life. Bring every intention to Our Lady while surrendering its outcome completely to the sovereign will of her Son. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Robert Bellarmine. Your resolution before God: Pray for fidelity to the apostolic Church and reject every habit of treating religion as private preference. Carry this word: Catholic belief is received and lived within the visible apostolic order Christ established. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "If we would every year overcome one vice, we should anon come to perfection." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 11, p. 20 À Kempis does not flatter the soul with the promise of instant perfection. He asks for patient warfare against a definite vice. Much spiritual discouragement comes from trying vaguely to become holy while refusing to name the repeated fault through which self-will governs ordinary life. Choose the vice by its actual frequency, not by how dramatic its name appears. It may be complaint, delay, curiosity, harsh judgment, vanity, impurity of thought, or refusal of prayer. Place it before God without excuse, ask Our Lady for the contrary virtue, and begin with its next small occasion. Today's Practice: Name your recurring vice and write down the contrary acts you will make whenever it appears. DAILY EXAMEN Examine where self-will resisted God, rightful authority, or duty, and ask Our Lady to lead you back to Jesus in humble obedience. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, through St. Pius I, give me love for Thy visible Church and courage to remain faithful when her order is costly to confess. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. VERDAD DE LA FE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Nota de la Iglesia: One Defensor: St. Robert Bellarmine Defensa católica: The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. Error que resistir: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Early Roman apostolic fidelity. ORACIÓN O Lord, through St. Pius I, give me love for Thy visible Church and courage to remain faithful when her order is costly to confess. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
