CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Ss. Tiburtius and Susanna, Martyrs 2028-08-11 - Time after Pentecost - Simple - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. Chastity: the virtue that orders sexuality according to one's state of life and treats the body as belonging to God. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The green season is not empty time. It is growth under grace. The pilgrim must ask whether the seed of doctrine is becoming virtue, whether prayer is becoming habit, whether zeal is becoming charity, and whether Catholic truth is governing ordinary choices. Ask Our Lady to make devotion holy by leading you away from every sin and into the full imitation of her principal virtues. Ask Our Lady for hatred of every sin and faithful imitation of the entire pattern of virtues St. Louis de Montfort names. "True devotion to our Lady is holy; that is to say, it leads the soul to avoid sin, and to imitate in the Blessed Virgin particularly her profound humility, her lively faith, her continual prayer, her universal mortification, her divine purity, her ardent charity, her heroic patience, her angelical sweetness, and her divine wisdom." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 108 Holiness supplies an unmistakable test: devotion must lead away from sin and toward resemblance to Mary. St. Louis de Montfort names ten principal virtues, not a narrow devotional specialty. Humility, faith, prayer, mortification, purity, charity, patience, sweetness, and wisdom must penetrate the whole moral and spiritual life. Universal mortification prevents selective holiness. Every disordered appetite must be governed; every commandment and duty must be obeyed; every virtue must be cultivated according to present obligations. Marian devotion that leaves pride, impurity, bitterness, dishonesty, sloth, falsehood, or self-will undisturbed contradicts its own holy purpose. She merited the palm of martyrdom by being beheaded in the time of Diocletian. — At Gomana, in Pontus, St. Alexander, bishop, surnamed Carbonarius, who added to a consummate knowledge of philosophy an eminent degree of Christian humility. Together these saints show that neither physical torment nor social position can excuse denial of Christ. Let these Roman martyrs steady you. The world often begins by asking for a little silence, a little compromise, a little surrender of modesty. The Catholic answer must remain calm, clear, and faithful to Christ. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Revelation Was Entrusted to the Church The Church places this truth before you today: Sacred Scripture and Apostolic Tradition are received within the Church, whose divinely assisted teaching office guards the deposit of faith. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Private reading must remain subject to the faith once delivered, because the Scriptures belong to the Church that received, preserved, and interprets them. The grace to be practiced is Chaste firmness under pressure, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice comprehensive holiness through humility, faith, prayer, mortification, purity, charity, patience, sweetness, and wisdom. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist private judgment when it sets itself above the Church's received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing chaste firmness under pressure when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Welcome the searching purification required when Mary's virtues expose sinful habits, neglected duties, and resistant appetites. Oppose every known sin and exercise the full range of Marian virtue throughout worship, labor, speech, relationships, and sacrifice. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus. Your resolution before God: Thank God for natural goods and order their use to grace and truth. Carry this word: Natural kindness is not the same as supernatural fidelity. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "In silence and quietness of heart a devout soul profiteth much and learneth the hidden sentences of Scripture." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 20, p. 33 Holy silence is not the absence of sound alone. A room may be quiet while the mind repeats injuries, imagines arguments, and pursues every rumor. À Kempis asks for quietness of heart: the recollection in which the soul stops scattering itself and becomes able to receive what God has already spoken. Give Scripture a little protected ground today. Read a few verses slowly, preferably from the day's Gospel, and resist the urge to hurry toward commentary or novelty. Ask what God reveals, what He commands, and what response must be made before the words are allowed to pass. Today's Practice: Keep ten quiet minutes with the day's Gospel, asking what truths it teaches and what commands require your obedience. DAILY EXAMEN Examine the whole list of virtues, make contrition for every contrary fault, and plan concrete amendment across the entire life. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, bless every natural good, but do not let me confuse it with the life of grace. Draw my family, my work, and my affections beneath the Catholic Faith. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
