CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Joachim, Father of the Blessed Virgin Mary 2028-08-16 - Time after Pentecost - Double of the Second Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Nestorian error: the error of speaking about Christ as though His divinity and humanity belonged to two separate persons instead of the one eternal Son. Incarnation: the mystery that the eternal Son of God truly took a human nature and became man without ceasing to be God. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR In the Time after Pentecost, the Church sends the faithful back into daily labor under the light of the Holy Ghost. The soul must not seek fire as excitement only. It must seek the fire that purifies speech, strengthens duty, exposes false peace, and keeps the Church's received worship dear. Join St. Louis de Montfort's hope that Our Lady may have more faithful children and servants so that Jesus reigns more fully in hearts. Ask Our Lady to increase her faithful servants and, through them, establish the reign of Jesus across every part of life. Marian devotion is measured by this Christward fruit—stronger faith in His doctrine, greater worship of His Majesty, firmer obedience to His commandments, deeper love of His Cross, and more ardent labor for souls. Hope must become cooperation. Pray for the spread of true devotion, teach it accurately, embody it without contradiction, resist counterfeits, and help families and souls establish a durable rule of Catholic life. Never seek a Marian identity detached from Christ's reign or use love of unity to conceal error and compromise. These three, Joachim, Anne, and Mary, clearly offered up unto the Trinity a sacrifice of praise. For the name Joachim being interpreted, signifieth "The preparation of the Lord," and out of him was prepared the Temple of the Lord, namely, the Virgin. The name Anne signifieth "grace," and she and Joachim did indeed receive a grace when, in answer to their prayers, they generated such an offspring, compassing the Holy Virgin. Since it was to be that the Virgin Mother of God should be born of Anne, nature dared not to produce any other child before this child of grace, but humbly waited until grace should have produced her's. It behoved that she should come into the world as a first-born, who was to bear the First-born of every creature, even Him by Whom all things were made. O blessed couple, Joachim and Anne--unto you is all creation laid under debt, since through you creation hath offered to the Creator this noblest of gifts, namely, that chaste mother, who alone was worthy of the Creator. Sixth Lesson - The Mother of God and the Incarnate Word Rejoice, O Joachim, from whose daughter a Child hath unto us been born, and His name is called The Angel of the Great Counsel, that is, of the salvation of the whole world. Let Nestorius be ashamed, and put his hand upon his mouth. Her Child is God. How then can His Mother be other than Mother of God? "Whosoever acknowledgeth not the Holy Mother of God is far from God." This saying is not mine, although it is mine in all other senses than that of authority. I have received it as a most godly legacy from Father Gregory the Divine. O blessed couple, Joachim and Anne. Christ saith in a certain place: "By their fruits ye shall know them" (Matth. iii. 20)--and ye are known by the fruit of your chaste loins. That that which should be born of you might be worthy and well-pleasing in the sight of God, ye ordered your own lives by rule. In the chaste and holy exercise of your natural gift, ye produced the treasure of virginity. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE True Devotion to Mary Forms the Soul in Christ The Church places this truth before you today: True Marian devotion is not sentiment detached from obedience. It brings the soul more deeply under Christ's rule. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Our Lady does not compete with her Son. She forms servants who hear Him, believe Him, and remain beneath His Cross. The grace to be practiced is Generational fidelity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice Christ-centered Marian zeal by making every honor of Our Lady bear fruit in faith, worship, obedience, virtue, and salvation. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false Marian devotion that seeks comfort, novelty, or emotion without conversion. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing generational fidelity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the labor and opposition involved in spreading true devotion without distortion, compromise, impatience, or self-promotion. Pray, teach, serve, and give example so devotion to Our Lady visibly strengthens the reign of Jesus in hearts and homes. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Louis-Marie de Montfort. Your resolution before God: Practice every virtue the day requires, giving particular attention to the virtue most opposed by your habitual fault. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
