CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Day within the Octave of the Assumption 2028-08-18 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Pentecost does not end when the octave passes. Its fruit must remain in the soul: public confession of truth, docility to apostolic doctrine, courage before false authority, and charity strong enough to resist error without bitterness. Ask the Holy Ghost to establish the full interior life of true devotion and direct it wholly to Jesus Christ, our Last End. Offer the whole interior life to Our Lady so every thought, desire, intention, prayer, and action may be ordered through her to Jesus. "There are several interior practices of true devotion to the Blessed Virgin. Here are the principal of them stated compendiously. (1) To honour her as the worthy Mother of God, with the worship of hyperdulia; that is to say, to esteem her and honour her above all the other Saints, as the masterpiece of grace, and the first after Jesus Christ, true God and true Man; (2) to meditate her virtues, her privileges, and her actions; (3) to contemplate her grandeurs; (4) to make to her acts of love, of praise, of gratitude; (5) to invoke her cordially; (6) to offer ourselves to her, and unite ourselves with her; (7) to do all our actions with the view of pleasing her; (8) to begin, to continue, and to finish all our actions by her, in her, and with her, in order that we may do them by Jesus Christ, in Jesus Christ, with Jesus Christ, and for Jesus Christ our Last End." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 115 St. Louis de Montfort gives a complete interior program: rightful hyperdulia, meditation upon Mary's virtues and privileges, contemplation of her greatness, love, praise, gratitude, cordial invocation, self-offering, union, and action undertaken with her. These practices form the mind, will, memory, affections, and intentions rather than decorating an unchanged life. The final clause governs the entire list. Everything is ordered to Jesus Christ, our Last End: by Him, in Him, with Him, and for Him. Mary's God-given place is exalted without confusion because her maternal work carries the soul into fuller Christological faith, worship, obedience, imitation, sacrifice, and union. The octave applies that lesson to the Assumption and keeps Our Lady's glory before the soul. Action becomes fruitful when the soul first receives the word of Christ in recollection. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - The Joy of Heaven at Mary's Coming When the glorious Virgin this day mounted upon the heavens, without doubt, she abundantly increased the joy of the citizens above. This same is she the voice of whose salutation maketh to leap with joy even such as are still shut up in their mothers' bellies. (Luke i. 41, 44.) If the soul of an unborn babe melted when Mary spake, what must we imagine to have been the jubilation of the heavenly ones, when it was their reward at once to hear her voice, and to see her face, and to enjoy her blessed presence? Fifth Lesson - The Son Welcomes His Mother But who also can picture to himself with what glory the Queen of the world went forth, and with what keen desire the whole multitude of the armies which are in heaven came out to meet her, with what hymns she was led to her throne of glory, with what a look of peace, with what a countenance of grace, with what Divine embraces her Son welcomed her, and set her above everything which God hath made? It was that honour of which such a Mother was worthy, and with that glory which beseemed such a Son. Sixth Lesson - Grace on Earth Crowned with Glory Sweet indeed were the kisses which the Suckling, Whom His Mother had praised while yet He lay hid in her virginal womb, pressed upon her lips. But shall we not believe that sweeter were those which she received from Him in blessed welcome, when He was sitting at the right hand of His Father, and she went up to the throne of His glory, singing the marriage-song and saying:—"Let Him kiss me with the kisses of His mouth?" (Cant. i. 2.) Who shall declare the generation of Christ or the Assumption of Mary? So much as she found grace on earth more than others, so much more excellent than that of others is the glory which she hath in heaven. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Christ Is King Over Public Life The Church places this truth before you today: Our Lord's kingship is not confined to private devotion. Men, families, laws, and nations are subject to His authority. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church's Catholicity includes the public claim of Christ over all peoples, not merely the private consolation of believers. The grace to be practiced is Persevering heavenly-mindedness, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice interior devotion through reverence, meditation, gratitude, invocation, self-offering, union with Mary, and complete orientation to Christ. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing persevering heavenly-mindedness when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the discipline of recollection when distractions, self-will, haste, and disordered affection resist an interior Marian life. Begin, continue, and finish all duties with Our Lady so they may be performed by, in, with, and for Jesus Christ. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Give thanks for the Precious Blood and guard every known occasion where grace could be wasted. Carry this word: The Precious Blood teaches the price of grace. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Take the cross, therefore, and follow Jesus, and thou shalt go into the life everlasting." Stand beneath it with Our Lady instead of fleeing into resentment. You are not asked to enjoy pain or pretend that evil is good. You are asked not to lose the good that grace can draw from what Providence permits. Carry the unavoidable burden without adding the heavier cross of rebellion, and offer its hidden weight for a soul in danger. Today's Practice: Receive today's unavoidable crosses and offer them through Mary for souls in need. DAILY EXAMEN Review the principal interior practices without narrowing the examination, and ask whether each brought the whole soul nearer to Jesus. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, by Thy Precious Blood cleanse my conscience, strengthen my will, and teach me never to treat grace as cheap. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
