CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
St. Bartholomew, Apostle
2028-08-24 - Time after Pentecost - Double of the Second Class - red
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith.
Apostle: one sent by Christ with authority to preach and establish the Church; the title especially names the Twelve and St. Paul.
Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles.
The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
Today the Church recalls that Christ entrusted His doctrine, sacraments, and authority to the apostles and commanded them to hand these gifts on. Catholics therefore receive the Faith from the Church rather than inventing it privately. They must also remember that sacred office is meant to serve revealed truth: holding an office and remaining faithful to its duties are related, but they are not identical. Offer Our Lady body, soul, temporal goods, spiritual goods, past, present, future, nature, grace, and glory without reserve. Renew the complete gift of body, soul, possessions, spiritual goods, time, relationships, labor, suffering, and future to Jesus through Mary.

"This devotion consists, then, in giving ourselves entirely and altogether to our Lady, in order to belong entirely and altogether to Jesus by her. We must give her; (1) our body, with all its senses and its members; (2) our soul, with all its powers; (3) the exterior goods of fortune, whether present or to come; (4) our interior and spiritual goods, which are our merits and our virtues, and our good works, past, present, and future."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 121

Total consecration admits no protected province. Body and senses, soul and faculties, present and future possessions, merits, virtues, and good works are entrusted so the person may belong entirely to Jesus through Mary. Ownership gives way to stewardship beneath God's commandments, Providence, and the obligations of state.

This breadth forbids both vague symbolism and selective surrender. Govern sight, hearing, speech, appetite, imagination, memory, intellect, will, time, money, home, labor, influence, prayer, penance, and suffering as consecrated goods. Eternity is the horizon, and belonging to Jesus through Mary is the reward sought.

PRACTICE
Before correcting anyone, ask whether your words seek victory for truth or satisfaction for self.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile."
Our Lord Jesus Christ, John 1:47, Douay-Rheims

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - August 24
apostle St. Bartholomew, who preached the Gospel of Christ in India. He passed thence into the Greater Armenia, where, after converting many to the faith, he was flayed alive by the barbarians, and beheaded by order of king Astyages, and thus he terminated his martyrdom. His sacred body was first carried to the island of Lipara, then to Benevento, and finally to Rome in the island of the Tiber, where it is venerated by the pious faithful. — At Carthage, three hundred holy martyrs, in the time of Valerian and Gallienus. Among other torments inflicted on them, a pit filled with burning lime was prepared by order of the governor, who, live coals with incense being brought to him, said to the confessors: "Choose one of these two things; to offer incense to Jupiter on these coals, or to cast yourselves into the lime." Armed with faith, and confessing Christ to be the Son of God, they quickly precipitated themselves into the pit, and amidst the vapors of the lime were reduced to dust. From this circumstance this blessed troop obtained the appellation of White Mass. — At Nepi, St. Ptolemy, bishop, disciple of the blessed apostle Peter. Being sent by him to preach the Gospel in Tuscany, he died a glorious martyr of Christ in the city of Nepi. — In the same place, St. Eomanus, bishop of that city, who was the disciple of St. Ptolemy, and his companion in martyrdom. — At Ostia, St. Aurea, virgin and martyr, who was plunged into the sea with a stone tied to her neck. Her body, being cast on the shore, was buried by blessed Nounus. — In Isauria, St. Tatio, martyr, who received the crown of martyrdom by being beheaded in the persecution of Domitian, under the governor Urbanus. — The same day, St. Eutychius, disciple of the blessed Evangelist John. He preached the Gospel in many countries, was subjected to imprisonment, to stripes and fire, and finally he rested in peace. — Also, t. George Limniota, monk. Because he reprehended the impious emperor Leo for breaking holy images and burning the relics of the saints, he had his hands cut off and his head burned by order of the tyrant, and went to our Lord to receive the recompense of a martyr. — At Rouen, St. Owen, bishop and confessor. — At Nevers, St. Patrick, abbot.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY
He chose twelve of them.
St. Bartholomew, Apostle - Luke 6:12-19
"He chose twelve of them, whom also he named apostles."
Let St. Bartholomew teach you a quiet apostolic heart. Christ knows how to choose and how to use the hidden faithful.

THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL
What This Gospel Teaches
The apostolate begins in the prayer of Christ and proceeds by His choice.
The power that heals the multitude comes from Him, not from human charisma.
Error corrected: The self-appointed mission detached from prayer and obedience.
- Where does this error tempt me in practice?
- What act does this Gospel require of me today?

HIGHLIGHTED SAINT
St. Bartholomew
Apostle and witness to Christ without guile.
St. Bartholomew is honored among the apostles sent by Christ to preach the Gospel, and is traditionally identified with Nathanael, of whom Our Lord said: Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile.
His feast calls the Church back to apostolic simplicity. The disciple must receive truth plainly, confess Christ without duplicity, and bear witness where he is sent.
Ask St. Bartholomew for a heart without guile. The Lord can build much with a soul that receives truth plainly.
FROM MATINS
The Apostle without guile, sent to bear witness.
Matins - Second Nocturn - St. Bartholomew, Apostle
Roman Breviary and St. Ambrose
"An Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile."
- The Breviary remembers St. Bartholomew within the apostolic mission, his preaching among distant peoples, and his martyrdom for Christ.
- The Apostle's traditional identification with Nathanael places sincerity and freedom from guile beside missionary courage.
- St. Ambrose teaches that the Apostles were not chosen for worldly power, but to carry Christ's authority through humility, suffering, and truth.
Let apostolic simplicity expose duplicity. Christ sends souls who will receive truth without bargaining and bear it without relying on worldly rank.
FULL BREVIARY LESSONS
Fourth Lesson - The Apostolate of St. Bartholomew
The Apostle Bartholomew was a Galilaean. In the division of the world among the Apostles it fell to his lot to preach the Gospel of JESUS Christ in hither India. He went thither and preached to those nations the coming of the Lord JESUS, according to the Gospel of St Matthew. When he had turned many in that province to JESUS Christ, and had endured many toils and woes, he came into the Greater Armenia.
Fifth Lesson - Conversion and Martyrdom
There he brought to the Christian faith Polymius the King, and his wife, and likewise the inhabitants of twelve cities. This stirred up a great hatred against him among the priests of that nation. They so inflamed against the Apostle Astyages the brother of King Polymius, that he savagely ordered Bartholomew to be flayed alive and beheaded; under the which martyrdom he gave up his soul to God.
Sixth Lesson - The Relics of the Apostle
His body was buried at the town of Albanopolis in the Greater Armenia, where he had suffered. It was afterwards taken to the Island of Lipari, and thence carried to Benevento. Lastly, the Emperor Otho III. brought it to Rome, where it was laid in the Church dedicated to God in his name on the Island in the Tiber. His Feast is kept at Rome upon the 25th day of August, and is celebrated by great crowds of people at the Church above mentioned, during the eight days following.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church
The Church places this truth before you today: The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded.
The grace to be practiced is Apostolic sincerity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice total stewardship by using every natural, temporal, and spiritual good according to God's will and the duties of your state.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing apostolic sincerity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Surrender control, possessiveness, bodily indulgence, vanity, and every reserve that contradicts entire belonging to Jesus through Mary. Use every faculty, possession, opportunity, prayer, sacrifice, and duty as consecrated property ordered to God's glory and souls.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. John Fisher.
Your resolution before God: Before correcting anyone, ask whether your words seek victory for truth or satisfaction for self.
Carry this word: Correction must be medicinal, not vain.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"Words feed not the soul; but a good life refresheth the mind, and a clean conscience bringeth a man to a firm and stable trust in God."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 2, p. 10
Pious speech cannot replace obedience. Peace grows where known duty is fulfilled and forgiven sin is honestly confessed.

The soul sometimes speaks about prayer, holiness, or the crisis in the Church because speaking is easier than amendment. Do not despise true words, but require them first of yourself. Let the repair of neglected duties become proof that truth has entered the will.
Today's Practice: Begin completing the neglected duties you have discussed more than performed, ordering them justly and without further excuse.
DAILY EXAMEN
Review the full inventory of the gift, repent wherever self resumed ownership, and return everything without reserve.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, govern my speech when error must be named. Let me correct with charity, courage, and sobriety, never with bitterness or theatrical anger.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

VERDAD DE LA FE
The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church
The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises.
Nota de la Iglesia: One
Defensor: St. John Fisher
Defensa católica: Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded.
Error que resistir: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church.
VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Apostolic sincerity.
