CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Beheading of St. John the Baptist 2028-08-29 - Time after Pentecost - Greater Double - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Time after Pentecost is the long school of the Holy Ghost. The fire given at Pentecost must become doctrine believed, worship guarded, commandments kept, homes ordered, tongues governed, and charity practiced without novelty or disorder. Renew the vows and promises of holy Baptism by renouncing the devil, the world, sin, and self and belonging entirely to Jesus through Mary. Renew every baptismal renunciation and promise consciously, rejecting the devil, worldly maxims, all sin, and self-will throughout the day. "I have said that this devotion may most justly be called a perfect renewal of the vows or promises of holy Baptism. [...] We renounce, as is expressed in the formula of consecration, the devil, the world, sin, and self; and we give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ by the hands of Mary." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 126 Consecration does not repeat the sacrament of Baptism or supply another baptismal grace. It deliberately renews the vows and promises attached to holy Baptism: renunciation of Satan, his pomps and works, and complete adherence to Jesus Christ as Master and sovereign Lord. The renewal must be lived, not merely pronounced. Renounce heresy, false worship, worldly maxims, every mortal and deliberate venial sin, occasions of sin, pride, impurity, resentment, dishonesty, sloth, and self-rule. Then submit doctrine, worship, morality, body, soul, possessions, time, and duty to Jesus through Mary's hands. PRACTICE Read the day's observance slowly, then ask what virtue it requires of you. It was afterwards solemnly carried to Rome, where it is kept in the church of St. Silvester, near Campo Marzio, and honored by the people with the greatest devotion. — At Rome, on Mount Aventine, the birthday of St. Sabina, martyr. Ask St. John for a clean tongue and a steady conscience. Truth spoken for God may cost peace with men, but it keeps peace with Heaven. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches St. John dies because truth about sin cannot be silenced by rank, passion, or human respect. The martyr's head is taken, but his witness remains whole before God. HIGHLIGHTED SAINT The Beheading of St. John the Baptist The forerunner slain for the moral law. St. John the Baptist suffered death because he rebuked Herod's unlawful union and would not bend the law of God before passion, courtly pressure, or royal power. Herod feared him, Herodias hated him, and a rash oath became the occasion of murder. His martyrdom teaches that penance, purity, and the moral law belong to the public witness of the Church. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - A Righteous Man Murdered by Adulterers The Lesson is taken from the Book upon Virgins, written by St Ambrose, Bishop [of Milan.] (ii. 6.) We must not hurry by the record of the Blessed Baptist John. We must ask what he was, and by whom, and why, and how, and when he was slain. He was a righteous man murdered by adulterers. The guilty passed upon their judge the sentence of death. Moreover, the death of the Prophet was the fee of a dancing-girl. And lastly, there was a feature about it from which even savages shrink—the order for completing the atrocity was given amid the merriment of a dinner-party. From banquet to prison, from prison to banquet—that was the course run by the servants of the murderer. How many horrors does this simple crime embrace within its details! Fifth Lesson - The Prophet's Head Served at a Banquet Who is there, that, on seeing the messenger hasten from the dinner-table to the prison, would not have forthwith concluded that he carried an order for the Prophet's release. If any one had heard that it was Herod's birth-day, and that he was giving a great feast, and that he had offered a damsel the choice of whatever she listed, and that thereupon a messenger had been sent to John's dungeon—if any one, I say, had heard this, what would he have supposed? He would have concluded that the damsel had asked and obtained John's freedom. What have executions in common with dinners? or death with gaiety? While the banquet was going on, the Prophet was hurried to death, by an order from the reveller whom he had not troubled even by a prayer for release. He was slain with the sword, and his head was served up in a plate. This was the new dish demanded by a cruelty which the Feast had been powerless to glut. Sixth Lesson - The Silent Witness Still Feared Look, savage King, look at a decoration which suiteth well with thy banquet! Put out thine hand, so as to lose no part of the luxury of cruelty, and let the streams of the sacred blood run between thy fingers. Thine hunger the dinner hath been unable to satisfy, thy cups have not been able to quench thine inhuman thirst—suck, suck the blood which the still palpitating veins are discharging from the place where the neck has been severed! Look at the eyes! Even in death they remain the eyes of a witness of thine uncleanness, but they are closing themselves upon the spectacle of thy pleasures. Those eyes indeed are shutting—but it seems not so much from the laws of natural death, as from horror at the scene of thine enjoyment. The golden mouth, whose bloodless lips are silent now, can repeat no more the denunciation which thou couldest not bear to hear—and still thou art afraid of it! THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Doctrine Develops Without Becoming Another Doctrine The Church places this truth before you today: True growth in Catholic doctrine preserves the same meaning and the same judgment; it unfolds what was received, without changing the faith into a novelty. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Unity of faith is protected when later expression remains identical in substance with what the Church has always taught. The grace to be practiced is Fearless moral clarity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice baptismal fidelity through Catholic faith, worthy worship, obedience to every commandment, resistance to sin, and service of Christ. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the modernist notion that dogma may change its meaning according to the religious needs of an age. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing fearless moral clarity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the warfare demanded by baptismal promises when the devil, world, flesh, habit, and human respect resist their fulfillment. Carry the renunciations into every decision and give the entire field of life to Jesus Christ through the hands of Mary. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Vincent of Lerins. Your resolution before God: Read the day's observance slowly, then ask what virtue it requires of you. Carry this word: The Church's memory teaches the soul how to live in time. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "By resisting of passions, then, is gotten the very true peace of heart, and not by following them." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 6, p. 15 Peace is not surrender to every feeling. It is order beneath God, won by grace when appetite is made to obey truth and duty. A passion grows louder when it expects immediate obedience. Do not be alarmed merely because anger, fear, discouragement, or desire speaks forcefully. Place a little silence between the movement and your consent, call upon Jesus and Mary, and choose what remains right. Today's Practice: Delay impulsive responses and choose the calmer acts required by truth and duty. DAILY EXAMEN Examine every baptismal allegiance and renunciation, make contrition for disloyalty, and renew the whole covenant faithfully. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, keep the faithful in the Church's holy memory, and let this day's feast, feria, or witness draw my soul nearer to Thee. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
