CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Rose of Lima, Virgin 2028-08-30 - Time after Pentecost - Double - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Mortification: the deliberate restraint of a desire or comfort so that disordered habits weaken and love of God becomes freer. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. Penance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Time after Pentecost is the long school of the Holy Ghost. The fire given at Pentecost must become doctrine believed, worship guarded, commandments kept, homes ordered, tongues governed, and charity practiced without novelty or disorder. Ask for grace to keep the greatest and most indispensable vow by remaining faithfully in Jesus Christ after holy Baptism. Recall the binding baptismal vow and ask Our Lady for unwavering loyalty to Jesus against every demonic pomp, temptation, and compromise. "Men, says St. Thomas, make a vow at their Baptism to renounce the devil and all his pomps,—‘In Baptismo vovent homines abrenuntiare diabolo et pompis ejus.’ This vow, says St. Augustine, is the greatest and most indispensable of all vows,—‘Votum maximum nostrum, quo vovimus nos in Christo esse mansuros.’" St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 127 St. Louis de Montfort invokes St. Thomas, St. Augustine, and the canonists to show the gravity of baptismal vows. They are not childhood formalities that fade with memory. The Christian remains bound to renounce Satan and persevere in Christ, whether the promises were spoken personally or through sponsors. Forgetfulness helps explain widespread disobedience. Remedy it by frequent, intelligent renewal and daily examination. Know what Baptism demands: profession of the Catholic Faith, renunciation of every rival mastery, life in sanctifying grace, obedience to Christ and His Church, and perseverance until death. Ask Our Lady to guard this allegiance. PRACTICE Fulfill all known duties in their proper order, without deliberate delay or complaint. St. Rose of Lima, the first canonized flower of sanctity from the Americas, is remembered for prayer, penance, purity, and charity. Her hidden life of mortification and love was not wasted. She teaches that a soul can serve the Church by prayer, bodily discipline, works of mercy, and love offered to God for others. St. Rose teaches the power of hidden offering. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - The First Flower of South America The first flower of holiness which came to full blossom in South America, was the maiden Rose. She was born at Lima, of a Christian father and mother, [upon the 20th of April, in the year 1586,] and was remarkable from her childhood for marks of saintliness. The occasion of her name was a strange likeness to a rose, which her face assumed when she was a babe. To this name she afterwards added that of the Virgin Mother of God, desiring to be called "St Mary's Rose." At the age of fifteen years she uttered a vow of perpetual virginity. As she grew older, lest her parents should force her to marry, she polled her head of all her hair, which was very beautiful. She fasted to a degree almost superhuman, passing whole Lents without taking bread, and eating day by day only five pips of a lime. Fifth Lesson - Hidden Penance and Spiritual Combat She took the habit of the Third Order of St Dominick, and then doubled her former severities. She wore a long and very rough hair-cloth, into which she inserted small pins. She wore day and night under her veil a crown, the inner side of which was armed with pricks. In imitation of the hard steps of St Katharine of Sienna, she girded her loins with a threefold iron chain. She made to herself a bed of knotty sticks, and filled the gaps with broken bits of potsherd. She built herself a very small hut in the farthest corner of the garden, where she gave herself up to thoughts of heavenly things, and to punishing her body with often scourging, starvation, and sleeplessness. But she waxed strong in spirit, and though she often had to fight with evil ghosts, she conquered them, fearlessly prostrated them, and triumphed over them. Sixth Lesson - Fidelity through Desolation She suffered greatly from painful illnesses, from the maltreatment of the servants, and from slanderous accusations, but still complained that she did not suffer as much as she deserved. For fifteen years she pined in misery from desolation and dryness of spirit, bravely enduring torments worse than any form of death. After this period she began to overflow with consolation, to be enlightened by visions, and to melt with love like a Seraph's. She attained, by the frequency of visions, to a strange personal familiarity with her Guardian Angel, with St Katharine of Sienna, and with the Virgin Mother of God, and she earned from Christ the words, "Rose of My Heart, be thou My bride." She was famous for many miracles, both before and after she departed hence, and was happily transplanted into the Bridegroom's garden, [upon the 24th of August 1617, being aged 31 years.] Pope Clement X. with solemn pomp inscribed her name in the list of holy maidens. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Dogma Binds the Mind Because God Has Spoken The Church places this truth before you today: A Catholic dogma is not something the Church says for a while and later replaces. It is a truth revealed by God and taught by the Church. Because God cannot lie, the Church cannot later teach the opposite. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The binding force of dogma protects souls from private invention and keeps charity rooted in truth rather than mood. The grace to be practiced is Hidden penance for souls, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice steadfast allegiance by confessing the Faith, resisting Satan, preserving grace, obeying Christ, and repairing every breach promptly. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the modernist habit of treating dogma as a symbol whose meaning may be revised by later experience. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing hidden penance for souls when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Bear the cost of fidelity when cultural fashion, ridicule, appetite, fatigue, fear, or private interest invites betrayal of baptismal promises. Make worship, speech, labor, relationships, entertainment, possessions, and hidden conduct consistent with permanent belonging to Jesus. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is Pope St. Pius X. Your resolution before God: Fulfill all known duties in their proper order, without deliberate delay or complaint. Carry this word: Truth becomes fruitful when it is obeyed. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Trust not in thine own cunning, neither in the cunning or policy of any creature living, but rather in the grace of God, which helpeth meek persons." Work diligently, but place confidence in grace and entrust the outcome into Our Lady's hands for her Divine Son. Self-reliance often disguises itself as responsibility. The difference appears when plans fail: responsibility continues the duty peacefully, while self-reliance becomes anxious, harsh, or defeated because it secretly believed everything depended upon itself. Ask for help before beginning, and surrender the fruit when you have done what you can. Today's Practice: Begin a difficult duty with a Hail Mary and finish it without self-congratulation. DAILY EXAMEN Review the baptismal vow before God, identify every forgotten obligation, repent, and restore complete loyalty without delay. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, do not permit me to admire truth without submitting to it. Give me the courage to obey what Thou hast already made known. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
