CITY OF GOD IN EXILE 13th Sunday after Pentecost 2028-09-03 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double Sunday - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY 13th Sunday after Pentecost is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Pius X, Pope and Confessor on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Bishop: a successor of the apostles charged with teaching, sanctifying, and governing a local Church. Catechesis, catechist, or catechumen: catechesis is orderly instruction in the Faith; a catechist teaches it; a catechumen is a person receiving instruction in preparation for Baptism. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR At Pentecost the Holy Ghost strengthened the apostles to preach Christ publicly and carry the Gospel to the nations. His work is not private excitement separated from doctrine, worship, and the authority Christ established. The faithful should ask Him for zeal that makes them more obedient to revealed truth, more constant in charity, and more courageous in Catholic witness. Receive total consecration as an ancient and necessary renewal rather than a novelty or an optional ornament of Christian life. Ask for the humility to receive ancient Catholic formation and the seriousness to reject indifference toward every baptismal obligation. "No one can object to this devotion as either a new or an indifferent one. It is not new; because the Councils, the Fathers, and many authors both ancient and modern, speak of this consecration to our Lord, in renewing the vows and promises of Baptism, as of a thing anciently practised, and which they counsel to all Christians. Neither is it a matter of indifference." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 131 St. Louis de Montfort rejects two evasions. Consecration is not a spiritual novelty detached from Catholic memory, because it renews the ancient vows and promises of Baptism. Neither is forgetfulness harmless, because practical indifference to baptismal belonging becomes a source of disorder and danger to salvation. The precise devotional form is freely embraced, but the realities it intensifies are binding upon every baptized Christian: renunciation of Satan and sin, profession of the true Faith, allegiance to Jesus Christ, and fulfillment of baptismal obligations. Do not dismiss total consecration as exotic, nor treat the duties it renews as optional. PRACTICE Ask where you may be excusing error because it appears gentle, modest, familiar, or socially peaceful. Gratitude is one of the simplest ways for a healed soul to stay near the Healer. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Christ heals ten lepers, but only one returns to give thanks. Gratitude completes the movement of mercy by returning the soul to the Giver. Error corrected: The entitlement that receives mercy and forgets the merciful Lord. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT 13th Sunday after Pentecost The grateful leper returns. The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost gives the healing of the ten lepers, of whom only one returns to give glory to God. The day teaches gratitude, faith, and the danger of receiving mercy externally while failing to return interiorly to the Giver. Be the one who returns. Gratitude keeps mercy from becoming merely a benefit consumed and forgotten. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE St. Pius X Pope, catechist, and enemy of modernist error. St. Pius X labored for the restoration of all things in Christ, promoting sound catechesis, reverent worship, and clear resistance to modernist error. His witness shows pastoral charity joined to doctrinal vigilance. Souls cannot be protected if truth is softened or error is allowed to hide under religious language. Let St. Pius X teach firmness without bitterness. Clear doctrine is not cruelty; it is a work of mercy when fog is harming souls. FROM MATINS Leprosy as a figure of false doctrine. Matins - Third Nocturn - 13th Sunday after Pentecost St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo "There is no false doctrine but hath some truth mixed up with it." - The Breviary reads the lepers as a figure of souls disfigured by mixed doctrine, where truth and falsehood are confused together. - St. Augustine teaches that false teaching often keeps fragments of truth while corrupting the whole by disorder and mixture. - Christ the Good Master cleanses doctrinal leprosy, but the diseased soul must stand afar off and cry for mercy. Do not be impressed by error because it contains some true words. Ask Christ to cleanse the whole mind, not merely improve its language. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Seventh Lesson - St. Augustine on the Ten Lepers The Lesson is taken from the Holy Gospel according to Luke (xvii. 11.) It came to pass, as JESUS went to Jerusalem, that He passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. And, as He entered into a certain village, there met Him ten men that were lepers. And so on. Homily by St. Augustine, Bishop [of Hippo.] (Bk. ii. Gospel Questions, ch. 40.) The ten lepers "lifted up their voices and said: JESUS, Master, have mercy on us. And when He saw them, He said unto them: Go, show yourselves unto the Priests. And it came to pass that, as they went, they were cleansed." Question: why did the Lord send them unto the Priests, that, as they went, they might be cleansed? Lepers were the only class among those upon whose bodies He worked mercy, whom we find that He sent unto the Priests. It is written in another place that He said to a leper whom He had cleansed: "Go, and show thyself to the Priest, and offer for thy cleansing according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them" (Luke v. 14, Lev. xiv. 1 et seq.) We ask then, of what leprosy was a type, whereof they that were ridded were called, not "healed," but "cleansed." It is a disease which doth first appear in the skin, but destroyeth not immediately the strength, nor the use of feeling and the limbs. Eighth Lesson - False Doctrine Figured by Leprosy By lepers, therefore, we may not absurdly suppose such to be figured as have not the knowledge of the true faith, but do show forth divers parti-coloured teachings of error. They hide not their witlessness, but do use all such wit as they have to make it manifest, and proclaim it in high-sounding phrases. There is no false doctrine but hath some truth mixed up with it. A man's discourse then, with some truths in it unequally mingled with falsehoods, and all confounded in one mass, is like to the body of one that is stricken with leprosy, whereon all manner of foul colours do appear in this and that place along with the true colour of skin. Ninth Lesson - Cleansed by the Good Master Such men as these are banished out of the walls of the Church, to the end that haply when they stand afar off they may lift up their voices and cry to Christ for pardon, just as those ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off, outside the village, lifted up their voices and said: "JESUS, Master, have mercy on us." That they styled Him Master, by which title I know not if any besought the Lord for bodily healing, I think doth sufficiently show that leprosy signifieth false doctrine, whereof the Good Master doth cleanse us. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Sacraments Are Instruments of Christ The Church places this truth before you today: The sacraments are outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace; they are not symbols invented by the community. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Because Christ instituted the sacraments, the Church must guard their matter, form, minister, and intention with holy fear. The grace to be practiced is Grateful faith, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice rooted fidelity by testing devotion against Scripture, Tradition, Catholic authority, and the permanent demands of holy Baptism. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist sacramental casualness, especially the idea that good intention can repair invalid rites or invented forms. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing grateful faith when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Bear the discipline of inherited truth when novelty attracts or indifference offers relief from demanding obligations and lasting commitments. Renew the ancient baptismal pattern throughout faith, worship, moral conduct, prayer, penance, duty, and resistance to the world. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas. Your resolution before God: Ask where you may be excusing error because it appears gentle, modest, familiar, or socially peaceful. Carry this word: Be not deceived is a daily rule, not a rare warning. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "As long as we live in this world we may not be fully without temptation." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 13, p. 21 The presence of temptation does not itself prove that you have consented or that prayer has failed. The Christian remains in warfare. Temptation humbles presumption, reveals the need for grace, and gives the will an occasion to prefer God in deed rather than merely in desire. Do not converse needlessly with the temptation. Call upon Jesus and Mary, leave the occasion when you can, turn the imagination toward something lawful, and perform the nearest duty. If you fall, repent promptly; do not let wounded pride delay your return to mercy. Today's Practice: Prepare a firm response for today's habitual temptation: an aspiration, departure from the occasion, and prompt return to duty. DAILY EXAMEN Examine novelty-seeking and indifference, then renew gratitude for the ancient inheritance and obedience to its complete demands. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, preserve me from fair appearances that hide error. Teach me to love truth more than comfort, approval, or the peace that leaves souls wounded. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
