CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Feria in Time after Pentecost 2028-09-07 - Time after Pentecost - Feria - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR At Pentecost the Holy Ghost strengthened the apostles to preach Christ publicly and carry the Gospel to the nations. His work is not private excitement separated from doctrine, worship, and the authority Christ established. The faithful should ask Him for zeal that makes them more obedient to revealed truth, more constant in charity, and more courageous in Catholic witness. Give yourself without reserve to the service of the King of Kings through the hands of His holy Mother. Enter the day as a servant of the King of Kings and give every faculty, possession, obligation, and hour through His holy Mother. "If we can conceive on earth no employment more lofty than the service of God,—if the least servant of God is richer, more powerful, and more noble than all the kings and emperors of this earth, unless they also are the servants of God,—what must be the riches, the power, and the dignity of the faithful and perfect servant of God, who is devoted to His service entirely and without reserve, to the utmost extent possible?" St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 135 The first motive is God's service. St. Louis de Montfort speaks of spiritual riches, power, and nobility rooted in belonging to the King of Kings, not worldly rank, domination, wealth, or self-importance. The servant's dignity increases with total dependence because God's sovereignty orders the soul toward its true end. Service without reserve reaches doctrine, worship, commandments, duties, possessions, body, time, influence, suffering, prayer, and hidden intention. It excludes every private kingdom where self-will still reigns. Give everything through Mary's hands so service may be purified from pride and directed wholly to Jesus Christ. His release following shortly after, he immediately sold his patrimony, and distributed the proceeds of it partly to the poor and partly to his accusers, whom he regarded as his benefactors. But being again arrested, under the judge Sapritius, he was lacerated, pierced through with a sword, and thus consummated his martyrdom. — At Pompeiopolis, in Cilicia, St. Sozon, martyr, who, being thrown into the fire, yielded up his spirit, in the time of the emperor Maximian. — At Aquileia, St. Anastasius, martyr. — In the diocese of Autun, St. Regina, virgin and martyr, under the proconsul Olybrius. After having suffered imprisonment, the rack, and burning with torches, she was condemned to capital punishment, and so went to her spouse. — At Troyes, St. Nemorius, deacon, and his companions, martyrs, who were slain by Attila, king of the Huns. — At Orleans, in France, the departure from this life of the holy bishop Evortius, who was first a subdeacon of the Roman Church, and afterwards, through the divine favor, was designated bishop of that city by a dove. — In France, St. Augustalis, bishop and confessor. — At Capua, St. Pamphilus, bishop. — In the territory of Paris, St. Cloud, priest and confessor. — At Nonantola, pope St. Adrian III., remarkable for his zeal to reconcile the Eastern churches with the Holy See. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Unity Without Truth Is Not Catholic Unity The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic unity is unity in the faith, sacraments, worship, and lawful order of the Church. It is not agreement to ignore contradiction. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church unites by truth and grace; she cannot found unity on silence about error. The grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice total service by obeying God across faith, worship, morality, duty, charity, sacrifice, and the hidden government of self. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false ecumenism and every peace that asks doctrine to step aside. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Surrender every reserve where preference, reputation, comfort, fear, or control resists the sovereign claims of divine service. Perform the entire day's labor, prayer, relationships, decisions, and suffering as consecrated service rather than private possession. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Name the errors you are tempted to soften, then answer them with clear Catholic truth. Carry this word: There is no holiness where heresy is treated as harmless. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Fight strongly therefore against all sins, and dread not overmuch, although thou be encumbered by an evil custom, for that evil custom may be overcome with a good custom." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 21, p. 35 Habit is formed by repeated consent. Under grace, a small faithful act repeated daily becomes a defense against the sin that once seemed immovable. Do not wait for a dramatic conversion of temperament. Grace commonly asks for the next contrary act: silence instead of complaint, custody instead of curiosity, prayer instead of brooding, prompt duty instead of delay. Repeated fidelity clears a path by which the will learns to move more readily toward God. Today's Practice: Oppose your recurring bad habit with its contrary good acts throughout the day. DAILY EXAMEN Examine the whole field of service, repent wherever self remained master, and return every reserve to the King through Mary. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, give me hatred of error without hatred of souls. Let charity make me clearer, humbler, more patient, and more willing to defend what saves. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
