CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
Ss. Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs
2028-09-16 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double - red
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery.
Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission.
Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day.
The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
Pentecost does not end when the octave passes. Its fruit must remain in the soul: public confession of truth, docility to apostolic doctrine, courage before false authority, and charity strong enough to resist error without bitterness. Give yourself entirely to Our Lady and ask her to communicate her graces and virtues so you may belong more perfectly to Jesus. Give the whole self to Our Lady and ask her maternal generosity to clothe the day with humility, faith, purity, light, strength, and love.

"The most holy Virgin, who is a Mother of sweetness and mercy, and who never lets herself be vanquished in love and liberality, seeing that we give ourselves entirely to her, to honour and to serve her, and for that end strip ourselves of all that is dearest to us in order to adorn her, meets us in the same spirit. She also gives her whole self, and gives it in an unspeakable manner, to him who gives all to her."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 144

The third motive begins with Our Lady's maternal response. She is never overcome in love and liberality: the servant gives all, and she gives herself with graces, light, strength, love, and the communication of her humility, faith, purity, and other virtues. Her generosity forms a deeper gift to Jesus, not a separate possession apart from Him.

Mary is neither an autonomous source of sanctifying grace nor a substitute for personal cooperation. Everything she has comes from God and is exercised beneath Christ's will. Receive her maternal abundance by prayer, imitation, sacramental fidelity, mortification, complete duty, and obedience to every grace she obtains.

PRACTICE
Offer today's inconveniences in reparation for irreverence, false worship, and indifference.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Lord, lay not this sin to their charge."
St. Stephen, Acts 7:60, Douay-Rheims

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - September 16
The Saints Cornelius and Cyprian, pontiffs and - martyrs, whose birthday is the 14th of this month. — At Chalcedon, the birthday of St. Euphemia, virgin and martyr, under the emperor Diocletian and the proconsul Priscus. For faith in our Lord she was subjected to tortures, imprisonment, blows, the torment of the wheel, fire, the crushing weight of stones, the teeth of beasts, scourging with rods, the cutting of sharp saws, burning pans, all of which she survived. But when she was again exposed to the beasts in the amphitheatre, praying to our Lord to receive her spirit, one of the animals having inflicted a bite on her sacred body, whilst the rest licked her feet, she yielded her unspotted soul to God. — At Rome, the holy martyrs Lucia, noble matron, and Geminian, who were subjected to most grievous afflictions and a long time tortured, by the command of the emperor Diocletian. Finally, being put to the sword, they obtained the glorious victory of martyrdom. — Also, at Rome, at a place on the Flaminian road, ten miles from the city, the holy martyrs Abundius, priest, and Abundantius, deacon, whom the emperor Diocletian caused to be struck with the sword, together with Marcian, an illustrious man, and his son John, whom they had raised from the dead. — At Heraclea, in Thrace, St. Sebastiana, martyr, under the emperor Doinitian and the governor Sergius. Being brought to the faith of Christ by the blessed apostle Paul, she was tormented in various ways and finally beheaded. — At Cordova, the holy martyrs Kogellus and Servideus, who were decapitated, after their hands and feet had been cut off. — In Scotland, St. Ninian, bishop and confessor. — In England, St. Editha, virgin, daughter of the English king Edgar, who was consecrated to God in a monastery from her tender years, whence she may be said to have been ignorant of the world rather than to have forsaken it.

HIGHLIGHTED SAINT
Ss. Cornelius and Cyprian
Pontiffs and martyrs, confessors of Catholic unity.
The Martyrology honors Saints Cornelius and Cyprian as pontiffs and martyrs.
Their witness joins pastoral office to martyrdom and Catholic unity. Shepherds are not given to the Church for human management, but for confession of the true faith unto sacrifice.
Ask these martyrs to strengthen love for true unity. Catholic unity is not a mood; it is shared faith, true worship, and fidelity under lawful order.
FROM MATINS
Two shepherds confessing one Catholic unity unto blood.
Matins - Second Nocturn - Ss. Cornelius, Pope, and Cyprian, Bishop, Martyrs
Roman Breviary and St. Jerome
"They continued thus to write often one to the other."
- The proper lessons remember Pope St. Cornelius caring for the bodies of the Apostles, making converts, enduring exile, refusing sacrifice to Mars, and receiving martyrdom.
- St. Cyprian comforted Pope St. Cornelius by letters; the Breviary remembers their exchanges as Christian love joining the Bishop of Carthage to the Pope in persecution and confession.
- St. Cyprian's conversion, generosity to the poor, priesthood, episcopacy, teaching, and martyrdom show ecclesiastical office ordered to doctrine and witness rather than self-preservation.
Love unity in its Catholic form: communion in truth, lawful order, defense of souls, and willingness to suffer rather than purchase peace through surrender.
FULL BREVIARY LESSONS
Fourth Lesson - Pope St. Cornelius in Exile
Cornelius was a Roman who held the Popedom during the reign of the Emperors Gallus and Volusian. He, and that most holy Lady Lucina, took up the bodies of the Apostles Peter and Paul out of the Catacombs and put them in more convenient places. Lucina laid the body of Paul in a farm of her own upon the road to Ostia, hard by the place where he had received the sword-stroke. Cornelius placed that of the Prince of the Apostles hard by where he had been crucified. When this was told to the Emperors, and likewise that Cornelius was the means of making many Christians, he was banished to Civita Vecchia, where Cyprian, the holy Bishop of Carthage, comforted him by letters.
Fifth Lesson - Refusal of False Worship
They continued thus to write often one to the other, till the Emperors took in bad part these exchanges of Christian love, and sent for Cornelius to Rome. There they commanded him to be lashed with scourges loaded with lead as though he were a traitor, and then to be carried to offer sacrifice before the image of Mars. He firmly refused to commit this great wickedness, and was forthwith beheaded, upon the 14th day of September, [in the year of our Lord 252.] The blessed Lucina, with the help of the clergy, buried his body in the sand-pit on her own farm, near the Cemetery of Kallistus. He lived as Pope about two years.
Sixth Lesson - St. Cyprian, Bishop and Martyr
Cyprian was an African. He was first distinguished as a teacher of Rhetorick. He afterwards became a Christian at the persuasion of the Priest Cæcilius, whose surname he took, and parted all his goods among the poor. It was not long before he was chosen a Priest, and then made Bishop of Carthage. It would be idle to enlarge upon his wit, seeing that his works are as well known as the sun. He suffered under the Emperors Valerian and Gallienus, in the eighth persecution, and upon the same day, though not in the same year, that Cornelius testified at Rome.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
Valid Sacraments Are a Grave Priority
The Church places this truth before you today: The faithful must seek valid sacraments with prudence, sacrifice, and holy seriousness, without inventing sacraments or despising them. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Families often move for work, schools, or safety. The sacraments are a higher good, and should weigh heavily in practical decisions when God makes such a move possible.
The grace to be practiced is Pastoral fidelity unto martyrdom, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice receptive generosity by surrendering without reserve and cooperating with every grace and Marian virtue offered for union with Jesus.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist home-alone despair when it becomes settled indifference to seeking valid sacraments. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing pastoral fidelity unto martyrdom when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Strip away cherished attachments and accept the transformation required when Our Lady's virtues contradict entrenched habits and self-will. Imitate Mary's virtues across worship, speech, labor, relationships, self-denial, suffering, and every obligation of state.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Charles Borromeo.
Your resolution before God: Offer today's inconveniences in reparation for irreverence, false worship, and indifference.
Carry this word: Reparation answers public offense with hidden love.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"Thou alone art the true refection of the soul, and he that worthily eateth Thee shall be partaker and heir of eternal glory."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book IV, chapter 14, p. 203
The Blessed Sacrament is not one devotion among many: it is Jesus Christ, the soul's true food. Let every Marian offering lead you more faithfully to her Eucharistic Son.

If you can assist at Mass and receive worthily, approach with recollection and hunger rather than habit. If you cannot, do not allow absence to become forgetfulness. Turn toward the tabernacle, confess your desire, and ask Our Lady to prepare in you a more faithful welcome for Jesus.
Today's Practice: Make a reverent Spiritual Communion, or prepare carefully for Holy Communion if you will receive today.
DAILY EXAMEN
Examine whether you received and practiced Our Lady's maternal gifts or resisted them through attachment, passivity, and ingratitude.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, where Thou art forgotten, mocked, or coldly received, let me answer with prayer, penance, reverence, and love for Thy Sacred Heart.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

TESTIMONIO DEL BREVIARIO
Pontiffs and martyrs guarding unity.
Matins - Ss. Cornelius and Cyprian
- The Breviary honors St. Cornelius and St. Cyprian as pontiffs and martyrs, shepherds whose witness joined office, doctrine, unity, and suffering.
- Their feast teaches that unity in the Church is not maintained by vagueness, but by confession of the true faith.
Love Catholic unity enough to reject its counterfeits. Peace without truth is not the peace of Christ.
Su primer punto es: The Breviary honors St. Cornelius and St. Cyprian as pontiffs and martyrs, shepherds whose witness joined office, doctrine, unity, and suffering.
La instrucción práctica es: Love Catholic unity enough to reject its counterfeits. Peace without truth is not the peace of Christ.

Valid Sacraments Are a Grave Priority
The faithful must seek valid sacraments with prudence, sacrifice, and holy seriousness, without inventing sacraments or despising them.
Nota de la Iglesia: Holy
Defensor: St. Charles Borromeo
Defensa católica: Families often move for work, schools, or safety. The sacraments are a higher good, and should weigh heavily in practical decisions when God makes such a move possible.
Error que resistir: Resist home-alone despair when it becomes settled indifference to seeking valid sacraments.
VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Pastoral fidelity unto martyrdom.
O Lord, where Thou art forgotten, mocked, or coldly received, let me answer with prayer, penance, reverence, and love for Thy Sacred Heart.
