CITY OF GOD IN EXILE 15th Sunday after Pentecost 2028-09-17 - Time after Pentecost - Semi-Double Sunday - green PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY 15th Sunday after Pentecost is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves Stigmata of St. Francis, Confessor on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Bishop: a successor of the apostles charged with teaching, sanctifying, and governing a local Church. Penance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR At Pentecost the Holy Ghost strengthened the apostles to preach Christ publicly and carry the Gospel to the nations. His work is not private excitement separated from doctrine, worship, and the authority Christ established. The faithful should ask Him for zeal that makes them more obedient to revealed truth, more constant in charity, and more courageous in Catholic witness. With Mary, listen for the command of Christ: Do whatever He shall say to you. Ask for Our Lady's recollection before the noise of the day begins. Let her lead the mind away from distraction and toward the will of her Son. "This devotion consists, then, in giving ourselves entirely to Our Lady, in order to belong entirely to Jesus through her." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 121 True devotion is not measured by the warmth of a feeling or the number of Marian words upon the lips. St. Louis de Montfort speaks of a gift of self. What is placed in Mary's hands must no longer be withheld whenever obedience becomes costly, prayer becomes dry, or duty asks to be preferred to inclination. Do not be frightened by the greatness of this surrender. Our Lady does not impoverish the soul that gives itself to her; she teaches it to cease wasting itself upon vanity and to belong more simply to Jesus. Begin with the next duty, and let your consecration become visible there. PRACTICE Give thanks for the Precious Blood and guard every known occasion where grace could be wasted. This feast teaches that love of Christ Crucified is not decorative. The saint who embraces holy poverty and penance is conformed to the wounds of the Master. Let the Stigmata sober and console you. Matins - Third Nocturn - 15th Sunday after Pentecost St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo "That souls of men are every day called to life is the joy of our Mother the Church." - The Breviary teaches that Christ's visible miracles are signs by which the faithful should understand spiritual realities. - St. Augustine reads the raising of the widow's son as an image of souls dead in mind and called back to life by Christ. - The Church rejoices not only when bodies are raised, but when sinners awake from interior death and receive light. Do not despair of souls that seem dead. Christ sees the death hidden from others, and He alone can command the soul to rise. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church The Church places this truth before you today: The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded. The grace to be practiced is Hope in Christ's life-giving mercy, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's obedience. Catholic obedience hears God first, receives the truth whole, and refuses every command that would require sin or betrayal of the Faith. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing hope in Christ's life-giving mercy when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When the duty is difficult, make Mary's fiat your own: accept God's will without bargaining, while using every lawful means duty requires. Begin this act with the aspiration, 'Jesus, living in Mary, live and reign in me.' Then perform it faithfully. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. John Fisher. Your resolution before God: Give thanks for the Precious Blood and guard every known occasion where grace could be wasted. Carry this word: The Precious Blood teaches the price of grace. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Wherefore, if we will have the true understanding of Christ's Gospels, we must study to conform our life to His life as nigh as we can." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 1, p. 9 The Gospel is not given only to inform the mind. Grace asks that the life of Christ become visible throughout your conduct today, with particular attention to the virtue shown in the appointed mystery. It is possible to admire Our Lord while quietly refusing His manner of life. Ask where He is inviting you to become more patient, hidden, truthful, obedient, or forgiving. Conformity begins when admiration accepts a cost. Today's Practice: Before today's decisions, ask: How does fidelity to Christ govern this? DAILY EXAMEN Examine whether you obeyed Christ promptly or delayed through self-will. Entrust repentance and amendment to Our Lady. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, by Thy Precious Blood cleanse my conscience, strengthen my will, and teach me never to treat grace as cheap. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
