The calendar also preserves St. Remigius, Bishop and Confessor on this date. The Breviary witness panel below comes from that secondary observance. Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles. Receive the Catholic inheritance of love for Our Lady with gratitude and without embarrassment. Consecrate the place and persons entrusted to your duty to Jesus through Mary. SUNDAY EPISTLE AND GOSPEL 17th Sunday after Pentecost Principal guide: St. Thomas Aquinas The Epistle and Gospel reveal the supernatural unity of the Church from its interior law and divine Head. St. Paul commands conduct worthy of the Christian vocation: humility, meekness, patience, charity, and the bond of peace within one body, beneath one Lord, professing one faith and one baptism. Our Lord names love of God and neighbor as the commandments upon which the whole law depends, then compels the Pharisees to confront that Christ is both David's Son and David's Lord. Catholic unity is life ordered by charity beneath the divine Christ, never agreement purchased by concealing His truth. THE EPISTLE Walk worthy of the one Catholic vocation Ephesians 4:1-6 "Brethren: I, a prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that you walk worthy of the vocation in which you are called." "With all humility and mildness, with patience, supporting one another in charity, careful to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." "One body and one spirit, as you are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in us all, who is blessed for ever and ever. Amen." St. Thomas explains that St. Paul urges the faithful to conduct themselves according to the dignity of their calling. They have been called from estrangement to become fellow citizens of the saints and members of God's household; their daily walk must correspond to that supernatural vocation. The Apostle speaks as a prisoner of the Lord and beseeches rather than flatters: his chains witness to the truth for which he suffers, while his charity seeks the faithful's perseverance. Four dispositions guard concord. Humility opposes pride, from which discord arises when each man seeks mastery; meekness restrains anger and preserves peace; patience bears adversity without abandoning duty; and charity supports another's infirmity. These virtues do not make the soul passive. They bring self-will beneath God's order so that truth may be defended and duties fulfilled without pride, bitterness, impatience, or vindictiveness. Supporting another in charity never means negligence, consent to sin, or a merely natural friendship that refuses necessary correction. St. Thomas expressly distinguishes charitable forbearance from these corruptions. Charity considers the person, the fault, one's duty, and the fitting time and manner of correction. It bears weakness for the sake of salvation while refusing to call evil good or surrender revealed truth for outward calm. The unity to be kept is objective and supernatural. St. Thomas compares the Church to a city possessing one ruler, Christ; one law, the one faith; one common sacramental sign, baptism; and one final end, God. The unity of the Spirit is therefore received and guarded, not invented through compromise. 'One faith' requires the same revealed truths to be believed; the bond of peace joins those truths to charity in the one body of Christ. THE GOSPEL The whole law of charity and the divine Lordship of Christ Matthew 22:34-46 "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment." "And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets." "The Lord said to my Lord: Sit on my right hand, until I make Thy enemies Thy footstool. If David then call Him Lord, how is He his son?" The lawyer approaches with a question already entangled in controversy over which observances matter most. St. Thomas observes the presumption of asking about the greatest commandment while failing to keep lesser ones, and explains that Our Lord directs the answer to the interior source of obedient life. This interior law is not private feeling: God is to be loved as the first and final end, and all other loves are judged and ordered beneath Him. To love God with the whole heart, soul, and mind is to reserve no power or hidden chamber from His dominion. The second commandment follows in a true order. Man bears God's image, and the neighbor is loved in God and for God, with concern for both his temporal good and the salvation of his soul. Such love cannot flatter a neighbor in error, assist him in sin, or preserve human approval by silence when duty requires the truth. The whole law and the prophets depend upon these commandments because the final end governs practical action as a first principle governs understanding. Charity gives the commandments their living direction; it does not abolish or replace them. Love of God obeys His law, love of neighbor seeks his true good, and hatred of heresy rejects the falsehood that separates souls from Christ—beginning with pride, compromise, and self-will within one's own soul. Our Lord then turns from the commandment to the identity of its divine object. Christ is truly the Son of David according to His human nature and David's Lord according to His divinity. David speaks in the Holy Ghost when he records the Father's words to the Son; the right hand signifies divine honor and equality, not a bodily place. The one Lord confessed in the Epistle is therefore Jesus Christ, true God and true man, to whom the whole heart is owed. HOW THE LESSONS BELONG TOGETHER One Lord grounds one faith. The greatest commandment is not devotion to an undefined deity but the total allegiance of heart, soul, and mind to the true God revealed in Jesus Christ. The bond of peace proceeds from the Holy Ghost through faith and charity. It cannot be manufactured by suppressing doctrine, tolerating false worship, or treating contradictions in revealed truth as harmless differences. Humility, meekness, patience, and charitable support govern the manner in which truth is lived and defended. They exclude cruelty and self-exaltation without turning correction into indifference or silence. The Christian vocation claims the whole person: the mind assents to one faith, the will loves God and neighbor, the body obeys God's commandments, the baptized soul remains in the one body, and all advance together toward one eternal hope. SUNDAY PRACTICE Assist at Holy Mass and adore Jesus Christ as David's Son and David's Lord. Love God with your whole heart, soul, and mind by keeping His commandments, professing the Catholic Faith without compromise, and fulfilling every duty of your state. Support the weaknesses of others in charity without consenting to error; correct where duty requires with humility, meekness, patience, and prudent regard for time and manner. Forgive injuries, repair divisions caused by your own pride or anger, reject every false unity built upon silence before heresy, and pray and labor for your neighbor's salvation within the one body, one faith, and one baptism. The Martyrology honors St. Remigius, bishop of Rheims, who converted the Franks to Christ, regenerated King Clovis in the sacred font, and instructed him in the mysteries of faith. His feast teaches that nations are not converted by vague religious feeling, but by baptism, doctrine, pastoral authority, and the patient instruction of rulers and people. Ask St. Remigius for Catholic largeness of mind. The faith is not private decoration; Christ claims souls, households, rulers, and nations. BREVIARY WITNESS The bishop who instructed a people in the faith. In the Divine Office, Scripture, the lives of the saints, doctrine, and the Church's prayer are placed together so that the mind learns what the Church remembers and the heart learns how a Catholic ought to judge and live. Matins - Third Nocturn - 17th Sunday after Pentecost St. John Chrysostom, Patriarch of Constantinople "On these two commandments hang all the law and the Prophets." - The Breviary presents the great commandment as Christ's answer to loveless controversy and envious testing. - St. John Chrysostom teaches that love of God is the source and sanction of rightly ordered love of neighbor. - Hatred and envy expose the soul that talks about law while lacking charity. Defend truth without letting envy, bitterness, or rivalry masquerade as zeal. Charity does not weaken doctrine; it purifies the defender. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Unity Without Truth Is Not Catholic Unity The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic unity is unity in the faith, sacraments, worship, and lawful order of the Church. It is not agreement to ignore contradiction. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church unites by truth and grace; she cannot found unity on silence about error. The grace to be practiced is Apostolic instruction of peoples, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice stewardship under God: receive what is entrusted, guard it from corruption, and order it toward Christ. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false ecumenism and every peace that asks doctrine to step aside. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing apostolic instruction of peoples when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the responsibility of protection without becoming controlling; authority remains a service beneath God. Restore order to the part of the home or daily work now before you, and offer the whole of your household duties to Jesus through Mary. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Perform hidden acts of charity without seeking notice or return. Carry this word: Charity is clearest when it remains joined to truth. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "It behoveth thee to break thine own will in many things, if thou wilt have peace and concord with others." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 17, p. 27 Concord bought by surrendering truth is false, but many quarrels arise from preference rather than principle. Yield what belongs to self-will while holding fast what belongs to God. Learn to distinguish the two before the moment of conflict. Doctrine, purity, justice, and necessary duty may require firmness. Your preferred method, timing, recognition, or last word usually does not. The soul becomes strong when it stops spending zeal upon the defense of self. Today's Practice: Yield harmless preferences cheerfully whenever truth and duty do not require firmness. DAILY EXAMEN Ask whether the portion entrusted to you was more peaceful, pure, truthful, and prayerful because of your presence. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, make my charity patient without weakness, firm without harshness, and always ordered toward the salvation of souls. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. St. Thomas explains that St. Paul urges the faithful to conduct themselves according to the dignity of their calling. They have been called from estrangement to become fellow citizens of the saints and members of God's household; their daily walk must correspond to that supernatural vocation. The Apostle speaks as a prisoner of the Lord and beseeches rather than flatters: his chains witness to the truth for which he suffers, while his charity seeks the faithful's perseverance. Four dispositions guard concord. Humility opposes pride, from which discord arises when each man seeks mastery; meekness restrains anger and preserves peace; patience bears adversity without abandoning duty; and charity supports another's infirmity. These virtues do not make the soul passive. They bring self-will beneath God's order so that truth may be defended and duties fulfilled without pride, bitterness, impatience, or vindictiveness. Supporting another in charity never means negligence, consent to sin, or a merely natural friendship that refuses necessary correction. St. Thomas expressly distinguishes charitable forbearance from these corruptions. Charity considers the person, the fault, one's duty, and the fitting time and manner of correction. It bears weakness for the sake of salvation while refusing to call evil good or surrender revealed truth for outward calm. The unity to be kept is objective and supernatural. St. Thomas compares the Church to a city possessing one ruler, Christ; one law, the one faith; one common sacramental sign, baptism; and one final end, God. The unity of the Spirit is therefore received and guarded, not invented through compromise. 'One faith' requires the same revealed truths to be believed; the bond of peace joins those truths to charity in the one body of Christ. EL EVANGELIO The whole law of charity and the divine Lordship of Christ Matthew 22:34-46 "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul and with thy whole mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment." "And the second is like to this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments dependeth the whole law and the prophets." "The Lord said to my Lord: Sit on my right hand, until I make Thy enemies Thy footstool. If David then call Him Lord, how is He his son?" The lawyer approaches with a question already entangled in controversy over which observances matter most. St. Thomas observes the presumption of asking about the greatest commandment while failing to keep lesser ones, and explains that Our Lord directs the answer to the interior source of obedient life. This interior law is not private feeling: God is to be loved as the first and final end, and all other loves are judged and ordered beneath Him. To love God with the whole heart, soul, and mind is to reserve no power or hidden chamber from His dominion. The second commandment follows in a true order. Man bears God's image, and the neighbor is loved in God and for God, with concern for both his temporal good and the salvation of his soul. Such love cannot flatter a neighbor in error, assist him in sin, or preserve human approval by silence when duty requires the truth. The whole law and the prophets depend upon these commandments because the final end governs practical action as a first principle governs understanding. Charity gives the commandments their living direction; it does not abolish or replace them. Love of God obeys His law, love of neighbor seeks his true good, and hatred of heresy rejects the falsehood that separates souls from Christ—beginning with pride, compromise, and self-will within one's own soul. Our Lord then turns from the commandment to the identity of its divine object. Christ is truly the Son of David according to His human nature and David's Lord according to His divinity. David speaks in the Holy Ghost when he records the Father's words to the Son; the right hand signifies divine honor and equality, not a bodily place. The one Lord confessed in the Epistle is therefore Jesus Christ, true God and true man, to whom the whole heart is owed. CÓMO FORMAN UNA SOLA LECCIÓN One Lord grounds one faith. The greatest commandment is not devotion to an undefined deity but the total allegiance of heart, soul, and mind to the true God revealed in Jesus Christ. The bond of peace proceeds from the Holy Ghost through faith and charity. It cannot be manufactured by suppressing doctrine, tolerating false worship, or treating contradictions in revealed truth as harmless differences. Humility, meekness, patience, and charitable support govern the manner in which truth is lived and defended. They exclude cruelty and self-exaltation without turning correction into indifference or silence. The Christian vocation claims the whole person: the mind assents to one faith, the will loves God and neighbor, the body obeys God's commandments, the baptized soul remains in the one body, and all advance together toward one eternal hope.
