CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary 2028-10-11 - Time after Pentecost - Double of the Second Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Incarnation: the mystery that the eternal Son of God truly took a human nature and became man without ceasing to be God. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. Precious Blood: the human Blood of Jesus Christ, united to His divine Person and poured out on the Cross as the price of our redemption. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The divine Motherhood of Our Lady guards the truth that the Child she bore is one divine Person, true God and true man. Her whole dignity comes from Him, and every faithful Marian devotion returns the soul to His Incarnation, commandments, Cross, and grace. Place your prayers and duties into her hands so that she may teach you to offer them more purely to Jesus. Beside Our Lady, learn to persevere beneath the Cross without surrendering truth or hope. Ask Mary, Queen of Martyrs, for constancy. Offer in advance the contradiction, delay, or sorrow that divine Providence may permit. "The more often we do so, the sooner we shall be sanctified, and attain to union with Jesus Christ, which always follows necessarily on our union with Mary, because the spirit of Mary is the spirit of Jesus." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 259 Union with Our Lady is not a resting place apart from Christ. Her whole interior life belongs to Him. She believes His word, receives His will, keeps His mysteries, shares His sacrifice, and desires His glory. A soul formed in her spirit therefore becomes less occupied with itself and more ready for the reign of Jesus. When a cross arrives, resist the habit of watching yourself suffer. Turn instead toward Christ with Mary. Ask not first whether the burden feels bearable, but how it may be carried faithfully, without sin, complaint, or surrender of hope. PRACTICE Pray for family members and friends. Love them sincerely, but do not pretend the truth is less serious just to keep peace. QUOTE OF THE DAY "Whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" St. Elizabeth, Luke 1:43, Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - October 11 At Tarsus, in Cilicia, the birthday of the holy - martyrs Tharacus, Probus, and Andronicus, who endured a long and painful imprisonment, during the persecution of Diocletian, and being three times subjected to diverse punishments and tortures, finally obtained a glorious triumph for the confession of Christ by having their heads struck off. — In Vexin, in the time of the governor Fescenninus, the passion of the holy martyrs Nicasiuc, bishop of Eouen, Quirinus, priest, Scubiculus, deacon, and Pientia, virgin. — Also, the martyrdom of the Saints Anastasius, priest, Placidus, Genesius, and their companions. — In Thebais, St. Sarmata, disciple of the blessed abbot Anthony, who was put to death for Christ by the Saracens. — At Besancon, in France, St. Germanus, bishop and martyr. — At Uzes, in Narbonese Gaul, St. Firminus, bishop and confessor. — In Ireland, St. Kenny, abbot. — At Lier, in Belgium, the departure from this life of St. Gummarus, confessor. — At Kennes, St. JEmilian, confessor. — At Tarsus, in Cilicia, the holy women Zenaides and Philonilla, sisters, who were relatives of the blessed apostle Paul, and his disciples in the faith. — At Verona, St. Placidia, virgin. — At Calotium, a place now in the diocese of Asti, but formerly in that of Pavia, St. Alexander Sauli, bishop and confessor, of the congregation of Barnabites, a man illustrious by birth, learning and miracles. GOSPEL OF THE DAY The mother of my Lord. Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary - Luke 2:43-51 "His mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us?" Go to the Mother when Jesus seems hidden. She knows how to seek Him without losing faith. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Mary's motherhood is joined to seeking, sorrow, and obedient contemplation. The mystery of Christ exceeds even holy understanding, yet Our Lady keeps it faithfully. Error corrected: The cold doctrine that speaks of Mary without filial love. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT The Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary The divine maternity of the Mother of God. The feast honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as Mother of God, because the Child born of her is truly God the Son made flesh. It teaches that Marian doctrine protects Christological truth. To confess Mary as Mother of God is to confess the unity of the divine Person of Christ. Go to the Mother without fear of losing the Son. True Marian devotion keeps Christ's Person clearer, not dimmer. FROM MATINS The Mother who conceived Christ in faith before the flesh. Matins - Second Nocturn - Motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary Pope St. Leo the Great "Her soul had already conceived Him before her body." - The Breviary contemplates Mary's divine motherhood through the mystery of the Incarnation, where the Virgin is chosen to give true flesh to the eternal Word. - Pope St. Leo teaches that the Mother of God conceived in faith before she conceived in the body, so that her maternity is joined to obedient belief. - This feast guards Christological truth: Mary is honored because the Child born of her is truly God and truly man, one Lord Jesus Christ. Honor Our Lady's motherhood with doctrinal precision and filial love. Marian devotion must defend the truth of Christ, not float apart from it. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - She Conceived Him First in Faith The Lesson is taken from the Sermons of Pope St Leo the Great. (First for Christmas.) His Mother was chosen a Virgin of the kingly lineage of David, and when she was to grow heavy with the sacred Child, her soul had already conceived Him before her body. She learned the counsel of God announced to her by the Angel, lest the unwonted events should alarm her. The future Mother of God knew what was to be wrought in her by the Holy Ghost, and that her modesty was absolutely safe. For why should she, unto whom was promised all sufficient strength through the power of the Highest, have felt hopeless merely because of the unexampled character of such a conception? She believeth, and her belief is confirmed by the attestation of a miracle which hath already been wrought. The fruitfulness of Elizabeth, before unhoped for, is brought forward that she might not doubt that He Who had given conception unto her that was barren, would give the same unto her that was Virgin. And so the Word of God, the Son of God, Who was in the beginning with God, by Whom all things were made, and without Whom was not anything made that was made, to deliver man from eternal death, was made man. Fifth Lesson - God Truly Made Man Our Lord Jesus Christ, descending from His throne in heaven, but leaving not that glory which He hath with the Father, cometh into this lower world by being born after a new order and in a new birth. He cometh after a new order, in that He Who is unseen among His own, was seen among us; the Incomprehensible was fain to be comprehended, and He That is from everlasting to everlasting began to be in time. He was the Offspring of a new birth; conceived of a maiden, born of a maiden, without the passion of any fleshly father, without any breach of His Mother's virginity, since such a birth beseemed the coming Saviour of mankind, Who was to have in Him the nature of man's being, and to be free of any defilement of man's flesh. Though He sprung not as we spring, yet is His nature as our nature; we believe that He is free from the use and custom of men; but it was the power of God which wrought that a maiden should conceive, that a maiden should bring forth, and yet abide a maiden still. Sixth Lesson - The Virgin Mother and the Sinless Offspring The power of the Spirit of God was set to raise up what was cast down, to bind up what was broken, and to bestow abounding strength of modesty for the overcoming of the enticements of the flesh, and therefore it behoved that that power should first be poured forth to preserve that coy cloister, that holy hostel which had pleased Him, and that the sinless Offspring should keep His Mother maiden as she had been before, so that virginity, which in all others cannot survive motherhood, might, by being re-created, serve as a model to others. Moreover, doth it not seem a counsel of the very deepest wisdom, that Christ chose to be born of a virgin? To the end, that is, that the devil might not know that salvation for man had sprung into being, and might think the Child no otherwise born than other children, because the spirituality of the conception escaped his notice, and so it appeared to him to be an ordinary conception like others. To bring this about, the Christ was born of a Virgin, who had been made fruitful by the Holy Ghost: and whereas conception is affected in no other mother without some of the filthiness of sin, this solitary mother drew purification from conception. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church The Church places this truth before you today: The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded. The grace to be practiced is Filial love joined to doctrinal precision, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's fortitude: quiet, steadfast, and wholly joined to the sacrifice of her Son. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing filial love joined to doctrinal precision when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Do not seek suffering, but do not flee the cross attached to duty. Unite it to Christ through the Sorrowful Mother. Perform today's difficult act without dramatizing the cost. Let love, not self-observation, measure the offering. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. John Fisher. Your resolution before God: Pray for family members and friends. Love them sincerely, but do not pretend the truth is less serious just to keep peace. Carry this word: Family peace cannot be purchased by surrendering the Faith. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "I had liefer be poor with Thee, than rich without Thee." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book III, chapter 59, p. 173 Older English: “liefer” means “rather.” No created success compensates for separation from Christ. Prefer His friendship, His truth, and His Cross to every advantage gained by compromise. Temptation often presents the price first and hides the loss. It tells you what obedience may cost in comfort, reputation, companionship, or opportunity, while concealing the poverty of possessing these things without peace with God. Look beyond the immediate bargain and choose with eternity in view. Today's Practice: Refuse every compromise made for comfort, gain, or human respect. DAILY EXAMEN Place every wound and disappointment under Our Lady's mantle. Forgive injuries and ask for grace to remain at the Cross. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, make me patient in household division, firm without cruelty, and charitable without compromise. Let peace be made beneath truth, not against it. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
