Chrysanthus and Daria, Martyrs 2028-10-25 - Time after Pentecost - Simple - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Chastity: the virtue that orders sexuality according to one's state of life and treats the body as belonging to God. Supernatural: arising from God's grace and directed toward eternal life, above what unaided human nature can produce. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Our Lord's answer concerning tribute does not divide life into a small sacred corner and a world independent of Him. Caesar may receive what belongs to lawful civil authority, but the soul, conscience, worship, and final end belong to God. Examine whether fear of men has claimed anything that obedience owes first to Christ. Ask Our Lady to make Jesus Christ known in you as He ought to be known: believed, adored, obeyed, and loved. Profess faith in Jesus Christ as true God and true man, and ask His Mother to lead you into complete obedience to Him. "Jesus Christ is not known as He ought to be." Ask whether you know Christ only in the truths you prefer. After many sufferings endured for Christ, under the prefect Celerinus, they were ordered by the emperor Numerian to be thrown into a sandpit on the Salarian road, where, being overwhelmed with earth and stones, they were buried alive. — Also, at Rome, the birthday of fortysix holy soldiers, who were baptized together by pope Denis, and soon after beheaded by order of the emperor Claudius. They were buried on the Salarian way, with one hundred and twenty-one other martyrs. Among them are named four soldiers of Christ — Theodosius, Lucius, Mark and Peter. — At Soissons, in France, in the persecution of Diocletian, the holy martyrs Crispin and Crispinian, noble Komans. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Third Lesson - Husband and Wife beneath One Crown Chrysanthus and Daria were husband and wife, born of noble family but still more illustrious in faith, which Daria had received together with Baptism through the work of her husband. At Rome they converted an innumerable multitude to Christ, she among the women and he among the men. Therefore the prefect Celerinus arrested them and handed them over to the tribune Claudius, who ordered Chrysanthus, bound, to be tortured by the soldiers; but all his bonds were loosed, and soon the fetters into which he had been cast were broken. They next enclosed him in an oxhide and placed him beneath the most burning sun. Then, with his hands and feet bound by a chain, they thrust him into a dark prison; there the chains were loosed and a most brilliant light illuminated the place. Daria, meanwhile, was forced into a brothel, but while she remained fixed in prayer she was divinely defended from violation by the protection of a lion. Finally both were led to a sandpit on the Salarian Way; the earth was dug out, they were covered with stones, and they received the same crown of martyrdom. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Unity Without Truth Is Not Catholic Unity The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic unity is unity in the faith, sacraments, worship, and lawful order of the Church. It is not agreement to ignore contradiction. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church unites by truth and grace; she cannot found unity on silence about error. The grace to be practiced is Spousal fidelity unto martyrdom, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice integrity of faith: receive Christ whole rather than selecting only what consoles or agrees with the age. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false ecumenism and every peace that asks doctrine to step aside. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing spousal fidelity unto martyrdom when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the cost of belonging to the real Christ when the world offers a gentler counterfeit. Obey Christ's commandments today, beginning where feeling or human respect has encouraged delay. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: End the day with thanksgiving, examination, contrition, and a firm purpose for tomorrow. Carry this word: The day must end beneath truth. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "As long as we live in this world we may not be fully without temptation." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 13, p. 21 The presence of temptation does not itself prove that you have consented or that prayer has failed. The Christian remains in warfare. Temptation humbles presumption, reveals the need for grace, and gives the will an occasion to prefer God in deed rather than merely in desire. Do not converse needlessly with the temptation. Call upon Jesus and Mary, leave the occasion when you can, turn the imagination toward something lawful, and perform the nearest duty. If you fall, repent promptly; do not let wounded pride delay your return to mercy. Today's Practice: Prepare a firm response for today's habitual temptation: an aspiration, departure from the occasion, and prompt return to duty. DAILY EXAMEN Examine where you sought Christ's comfort while resisting His kingship, and ask pardon through the Sorrowful Mother. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, bring this day to judgment before Thy mercy. Show me where I obeyed, where I resisted, where I loved, and where I must begin again. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
