CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
St. Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr
2028-11-14 - Time after Pentecost - Double - red
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission.
Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day.
Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith.
The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
St. Josaphat labored for the return of separated Christians to unity with the Apostolic See and sealed that labor with martyrdom. He did not seek peace by treating contradictory doctrines as equal expressions of faith. True unity is unity in the Catholic Faith, sought with prayer, charity, patience, and willingness to suffer. Receive Jesus anew as the blessed Fruit of Mary's womb and ask that He be formed fully in your heart. Greet Our Lady with the Angelic Salutation and ask her to give you Jesus more fully in faith, grace, obedience, and love.

"If any one of the faithful has Jesus Christ formed in his heart, he can say boldly, All thanks be to Mary! what I possess is her effect and her fruit, and without her I should never have had it."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 33

Every ‘Blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, Jesus’ confesses the inseparable order of genuine Marian devotion: Mary gives us her Fruit. She does not terminate the soul in herself. Her maternal labor is fulfilled when Jesus Christ lives and reigns in the heart by sanctifying grace, true doctrine, virtue, and charity.

Pray the Angelus, the Hail Mary, and the Rosary with this Christ-centered attention. Ask not only for protection or temporal favors but for the full age of Christ in the soul. Let every mystery teach His life, every petition oppose sin, and every thanksgiving return through Mary to God.

PRACTICE
Pray for the conversion and return of those separated from the Church, naming neither their errors nor their souls with contempt.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"His mother saith to the ministers: Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye."
Holy Scripture, John 2:5, Original Douay-Rheims

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - November 14
The festival of St. Josaphat, bishop and martyr, — At Heraclea, in Thrace, the birthday of the holy martyrs Clementinus, Theodotus and Philomenus. — At Alexandria, St. Serapion, martyr, whom the persecutors, under the emperor Decius, subjected to torments so cruel that all his limbs were disjointed. He became a martyr of Christ by being hurled down from the upper part of his house. — At Troyes, in France, St. Venerandus, martyr, under the emperor Aurelian. — Also, in France, the holy virgin Veneranda, who received the crown of martyrdom under the emperor Antoninus and the governor Asclepiades. — At Gangres, in Paphlagonia, St. Hypatius, bishop? who on his way home from the great council of Nice, was attacked with stones by the Novatian heretics, and died a martyr. — At Algiers, in Africa, blessed Serapion, of the Order of Our Blessed Lady of Ransom. For the redemption of the faithful in captivity and the preaching of the Christian faith, he was the first of his Order to deserve the palm of martyrdom by being crucified and cut to pieces. — At Emesa, the passion of many holy women, who were barbarously tortured and massacred under Mady, a savage Arabian chief. — At Bologna, St. Jucundus, bishop and confessor. — In Ireland, St. Lawrence, bishop of Dublin.

HIGHLIGHTED SAINT
St. Josaphat
Bishop and martyr for Catholic unity and truth.
The Martyrology commemorates St. Josaphat as bishop and martyr, and elsewhere records his murder by schismatics through hatred of Catholic unity and truth.
His feast teaches that unity is not a mood of friendliness, but communion in true faith, lawful order, and sacramental life.
Ask St. Josaphat for charity that does not betray truth. Catholic unity is worth suffering for because souls are worth saving.
FROM MATINS
The shepherd who gave his life for Catholic unity and truth.
Matins - Second Nocturn - St. Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr
Roman Breviary
"A most zealous promoter of the union of the Greek Church with the Latin."
- The Breviary roots St. Josaphat's zeal in contemplation of Christ crucified, religious discipline, chastity, austerity, and complete refusal of worldly advancement before it describes his public defense of unity.
- He labored to restore schismatics and heretics to communion with the See of St. Peter, defended the Supreme Pontiff and the plenitude of his power, restored ecclesiastical goods, renewed sacred worship, built religious houses, and poured out his revenues upon pious works and the poor.
- Catholic unity in these lessons is communion in truth, authority, worship, and sacramental life. His gentleness toward his killers did not weaken his opposition to schism; his martyr's blood instead brought his murderers to repentance and rejection of their error.
Pray and labor for the return of souls to Catholic unity without disguising what separates them from it. Unite firmness about papal authority, doctrine, and worship to prayer, austerity, generosity, gentleness toward persons, and readiness to lay down your life for the flock.
FULL BREVIARY LESSONS
Fourth Lesson - The Wound of Love and the Discipline of Religion
Josaphat Kuncewicz was born at Vladimir in Volhynia of noble and Catholic parents. As a child, while hearing his mother speak of the Passion of Christ, he received in his heart a wound as though a dart had come forth from the side of an image of Jesus crucified. Inflamed with the love of God, he began to devote himself to prayer and pious works so earnestly that he became an example and an object of admiration to older youths. As a young man he professed the monastic rule among the cloistered followers of St. Basil at Vilna and made wonderful progress in evangelical perfection. He went barefoot even during the severe cold of that region, never ate meat, took wine only from obedience, and afflicted his body with a rough hairshirt until death. He preserved unstained the flower of chastity which he had vowed to the Virgin Mother of God in youth. The fame of his virtue and teaching soon became so widespread that he was appointed superior of the monastery at Byten while still young, then archimandrite of Vilna, and finally, though unwilling, Archbishop of Polotsk.
Fifth Lesson - Catholic Unity, Papal Authority, and Mercy
Raised to that dignity, he relaxed nothing of his former manner of life and had nothing at heart except divine worship and the salvation of the sheep entrusted to him. A most zealous promoter of Catholic unity and truth, he labored with all his strength to bring schismatics and heretics back to communion with the See of St. Peter. By sermons and writings full of piety and doctrine he never ceased to defend the Supreme Pontiff and the plenitude of his power against the shameless calumnies and errors of the impious. He vindicated ecclesiastical goods seized by laymen. It is incredible how many heretics he recalled to the bosom of Mother Church. Pontifical declarations clearly attest that Josaphat was a most excellent promoter of the union of the Greek Church with the Latin. He restored the beauty of divine worship, built churches and houses for consecrated virgins, assisted other pious works, and voluntarily devoted the revenues of his see to them. He was so generous toward the poor that, when nothing else was at hand to relieve the need of a widow, he ordered his episcopal pallium to be pledged.
Sixth Lesson - The Martyr of Unity
The great progress of the Catholic Faith stirred such hatred in wicked men that by conspiracy they determined to seek Christ's athlete for death. He himself foretold in a sermon to the people what threatened him. During a pastoral visitation at Vitebsk, the murderers invaded the archiepiscopal residence and attacked those they met. The most gentle man went freely to meet them and addressed them kindly: 'Children, why do you strike my household? If you have anything against me, behold, I am here.' They rushed upon him, wounded him with weapons and arrows, struck him savagely with an axe, and cast him into the river on November 12, 1623, in the forty-third year of his age. His body, surrounded by a wonderful light, was taken from the water. The martyr's blood first benefited his very murderers, for all who had been condemned to death rejected schism and repented of their crime. Pope Urban VIII numbered him among the Blessed. On June 29, 1867, during the solemn centenary celebration of the Princes of the Apostles, Pope Pius IX canonized him in the Vatican Basilica before the College of Cardinals and nearly five hundred patriarchs, metropolitans, and bishops of every rite gathered from the whole world, solemnly enrolling this defender of ecclesiastical unity, the first from among the Eastern Christians, in the order of the Saints.
THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
The Sacraments Are Instruments of Christ
The Church places this truth before you today: The sacraments are outward signs instituted by Christ to give grace; they are not symbols invented by the community. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Because Christ instituted the sacraments, the Church must guard their matter, form, minister, and intention with holy fear.
The grace to be practiced is Zeal for Catholic unity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice grateful recollection by carrying the name, mysteries, teaching, and example of Jesus throughout the entire day.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist sacramental casualness, especially the idea that good intention can repair invalid rites or invented forms. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing zeal for Catholic unity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Unite every suffering to a mystery of the Rosary and accept it as part of Mary's labor that Christ be formed in you. Pray the Rosary with the goal of saying all three traditional groups of mysteries, offering it for an intention and for souls who have no one to pray for them.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas.
Your resolution before God: Pray for the conversion and return of those separated from the Church, naming neither their errors nor their souls with contempt.
Carry this word: Christian unity is return to one Faith, not agreement to ignore division.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"Ask not who said this, but take heed what is said."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 5, p. 14
Truth does not become true through fashion, applause, or a celebrated name. Test what you hear by revelation and the perennial teaching of the Church.

Yet à Kempis also rebukes the curiosity that collects authorities without receiving their doctrine. Listen for the truth God is giving through a trustworthy witness, and then permit that truth to correct you. The name of a saint should not become decoration around an unchanged life.
Today's Practice: Reject claims based on novelty or popularity and ask what the Church has always taught.
DAILY EXAMEN
Thank Our Lady for every trace of her Son formed in you and ask pardon where sin or negligence drove His likeness from your conduct.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, through St. Josaphat, bring separated souls into the unity of Thy Catholic Church and preserve me from false ecumenism.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
