CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr 2028-11-22 - Time after Pentecost - Double - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR At the close of the ecclesiastical year, the Church places judgment and the end of the world before souls tempted to live as though time had no account. Our Lord's warnings are not meant to produce curiosity about dates, but repentance, vigilance, and perseverance. Put your conscience in order while mercy still offers the present hour. Through Mary, receive the day from Jesus Christ and return it to Him. Place every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation into the hands of Our Lady, asking her to present the whole day to her Divine Son. "It was through the most holy Virgin Mary that Jesus came into the world, and it is also through her that He has to reign in the world." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 1 God did not choose Our Lady because He needed assistance from a creature. He chose her freely, and by that choice He teaches us something about His own order: the Word came to us in humility, hidden beneath a Mother's heart, and He wills that pride should not prescribe the road by which grace reaches a soul. You may desire the reign of Christ while still guarding some chamber of life for self-will. Bring that guarded place into the light today. Ask Mary to receive it, not as its final end, but as the Mother appointed to form in you a more obedient welcome for her Divine Son. PRACTICE Make a serious examination of conscience and resolve when you will next receive sacramental confession. QUOTE OF THE DAY "He who prays is certainly saved. He who prays not is certainly damned." St. Alphonsus Liguori, The Great Means of Salvation and of Perfection, Part I, chapter 1, conclusion ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - November 22 At Rome, St. Cecilia, virgin and martyr, who brought to the faith of Christ her spouse Valerian and his brother Tiburtius, and encouraged them to martyrdom. After their death, being arrested by order of Almachius, prefect of the city, and exposed to the fire, from which she came out uninjured, she terminated her glorious sufferings by the sword, in the time of the emperor Marcus Aurelius Sevens s Alexander. — At ColossaB, in Phrygia, during the reign of Nero, Saints Philemon and Apphias, disciples of St. Paul. When the Gentiles rushed into the church on the feast of Diana, they were arrested whilst the other Christians fled, and by the command of the governor Artocles, were scourged, let down into a pit up to their waist, and overwhelmed with stones. — Also, at Rome, St. Maurus, martyr, who, coming from Africa to visit the tombs of the Apostles, was condemned to die, under the emperor Numerian, Celerinus being prefect of the city. — At Antioch, in Pisidia, the martyrdom of the Saints Mark and Stephen, under the emperor Diocletian. — At Autun, St. Pragmatius, bishop and confessor. HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. Cecilia Virgin and martyr who brought her household to Christ. The Martyrology honors St. Cecilia at Rome, virgin and martyr, who brought her spouse Valerian and his brother Tiburtius to the faith of Christ and encouraged them to martyrdom. After their death she was exposed to fire, came out uninjured, and completed her sufferings by the sword. Her feast teaches virginal fidelity, holy influence in the household, and courage under persecution. Ask St. Cecilia for a voice that leads others to Christ. Holy influence does not flatter souls; it strengthens them for heaven. FROM MATINS The virgin who carried the Gospel in her breast. Matins - Second Nocturn - St. Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr Roman Breviary "The glorious maiden carried the Gospel of Christ always in her breast." - The Breviary presents St. Cecilia as a Roman virgin trained in the Christian faith and consecrated to God by vow. - Her witness converts Valerian and Tiburtius, joins prayer to purity, gives the goods of the martyrs to the poor, and endures fire and sword for Christ. - Her feast is therefore not merely musical memory, but the education of the soul in chastity, prayer, almsgiving, conversion of others, and martyrdom. Ask St. Cecilia for purity that becomes apostolic. The Gospel kept in the heart should become prayer, courage, charity to the poor, and strength to lead others to Christ. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - Virginity Guarded and Valerian Baptized Cecily was a Roman maiden of noble birth, trained up from her earliest years in the teaching of the Christian faith, and who by vow consecrated her virginity to God. She was afterwards given in marriage, against her will, to Valerian. On the first night she said to him: Valerian! I am under the wardship of an Angel, who keepeth me always a maiden. Therefore do nothing unto me, lest the anger of God should be aroused against thee. Valerian was moved at her words, and dared not to touch her. Also he added even this, that he would believe in Christ, if he could see the Angel. Cecily answered him that that could not be unless he were first baptized, and for the sake of seeing the Angel he was willing. So she bade him go unto Pope Urban, who was hiding in the sepulchre of the Martyrs on the Appian Way on account of the persecution. And he went unto him and was baptized. Fifth Lesson - Two Brothers Called to Martyrdom Thence he came back to Cecily, and found her praying, and the Angel with her, shining from the glory of God. As soon as he had recovered from the shock of wonder and fear, he brought his brother Tiburtius, and Cecily taught him Christ, and he was baptized by the same Pope Urban, and he also was vouchsafed to see the Angel whom his brother had seen. A little while after, both of them bravely suffered martyrdom under the Praefect Almachius, who then caused Cecily to be taken, and asked of her, first of all, where was the property of Tiburtius and Valerian? Sixth Lesson - Virgin and Martyr beneath Two Palms To him the Virgin answered that all their goods had been given to the poor. Thereupon he was filled with fury, and commanded her to be taken home, and burnt in the bath. She was in that place a day and a night, but the fire had not harmed her. Then was sent the executioner, who gave her three strokes of the axe, and, as he could not cut off her head, left her half-dead. Three days thereafter, upon the 22nd day of November, in the reign of the Emperor Alexander Severus, she winged her flight for heaven, glorified with the two palms of virginity and martyrdom. Her body was buried in the cemetery of Kallistus by the aforenamed Pope Urban, who also consecrated a Church in her name in her own house. Her reliques were brought into the city by Pope Paschal I, along with those of Tiburtius, Valerian, and Maximus, and all laid together in the said Church of St Cecily. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Christ Is King Over Public Life The Church places this truth before you today: Our Lord's kingship is not confined to private devotion. Men, families, laws, and nations are subject to His authority. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church's Catholicity includes the public claim of Christ over all peoples, not merely the private consolation of believers. The grace to be practiced is Pure courage that strengthens others, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Ask Our Lady to form this virtue in you by teaching you her humility: she received every gift from God and returned all glory to Him. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing pure courage that strengthens others when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Do not carry the cross alone or waste it in complaint. Stand beneath it with Our Lady and remain faithful to Jesus. Offer this duty through Mary, without seeking notice, so that it may belong more perfectly to Jesus Christ. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Make a serious examination of conscience and resolve when you will next receive sacramental confession. Carry this word: The end of time makes today's obedience urgent and today's repentance possible. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "It behoveth thee to break thine own will in many things, if thou wilt have peace and concord with others." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 17, p. 27 Concord bought by surrendering truth is false, but many quarrels arise from preference rather than principle. Yield what belongs to self-will while holding fast what belongs to God. Learn to distinguish the two before the moment of conflict. Doctrine, purity, justice, and necessary duty may require firmness. Your preferred method, timing, recognition, or last word usually does not. The soul becomes strong when it stops spending zeal upon the defense of self. Today's Practice: Yield harmless preferences cheerfully whenever truth and duty do not require firmness. DAILY EXAMEN Return the completed day into Our Lady's hands. Ask her to obtain pardon for its faults and to preserve whatever grace bore fruit. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Jesus, merciful Saviour and just Judge, preserve me from presumption, cleanse me from sin, and keep me faithful until Thy coming. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. Error que resistir: Resist secular liberalism, which treats society as though it could be rightly ordered without Christ. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Pure courage that strengthens others. ORACIÓN O Jesus, merciful Saviour and just Judge, preserve me from presumption, cleanse me from sin, and keep me faithful until Thy coming. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
