CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
Feria in Time after Pentecost
2028-12-01 - Time after Pentecost - Feria - green
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
Advent does not ask for a vague feeling of expectation. It summons the soul to clear a road for the King by repentance, recollection, and faithful duty. Ask Our Lady to show you what within the heart still refuses room to her Divine Son, and begin removing it today rather than waiting for a more convenient hour. Ask for a love of Our Lady that grows deeper rather than merely more talkative. Tell Our Lady simply that you desire to serve her Divine Son under her direction, not merely to feel devotion.

"Of Mary there is never enough."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 10

This famous saying must not be understood as permission for exaggeration, invention, or devotion separated from doctrine. St. Louis de Montfort immediately speaks of praising, honoring, loving, and serving Mary as we ought. The little word serving protects the whole sentence from sentimentality.

There is never enough true devotion because there is never enough surrender to Jesus Christ. The soul can always receive His Mother more faithfully, imitate her more exactly, pray with greater recollection, and surrender another reserve of self-will. Ask not for more emotion today, but for more faithful service.

PRACTICE
Keep definite Advent mortifications quietly and faithfully today.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"I answer, the reason for loving God is God Himself; and the measure of love due to Him is immeasurable love."
St. Bernard of Clairvaux, The Book of Saint Bernard on the Love of God, Chapter 1

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - December 1
The prophet Nahum, who was buried in Begabar. — At Rome, the holy martyrs Diodorus, priest, and Marian, deacon, with many others, who by the command of the emperor Numerian, were made partakers of the glory of martyrdom. — In the same city, the martyrdom of the saints Lucius, Rogatus, Cassian, and Candida, — The same day, St. Ansanus, martyr, who confessed Christ at Rome, and was cast into prison, in the time of the emperor Diocletian. Being afterwards conducted to Siena, in Tuscany, he there ended the course of his martyrdom by decapitation. — At Amelia, in Umbria, St. Olympias, ex-consul, who was converted to the faith by blessed Firmina, and being tortured on the rack, consummated his martyrdom under Diocletian. — At Arbele, in Persia, St. Ananias, martyr. — At Narni, St. Proculus, bishop and martyr, who after performing many good works, was beheaded by order of Totila, king of the Goths. — At Casale, St. Evasius, bishop and martyr. — At Milan, St. Castritian, bishop, who was eminent for virtues and the practice of pious and religious deeds in very troublous times for the Church. — At Brescia, St. Ursicinus, bishop. — At Noyon, St. Eligius, bishop, whose life is rendered illustrious by a considerable number of miracles. — At Verdun, St. Agericus, bishop. — The same day, St. Natalia, wife of the blessed martyr Adrian, under the emperor Diocletian. For a long time she served the holy martyrs detained in prison at Nicomedia, and when their combats were at an end, she repaired to Constantinople, where she went peacefully to her repose in the Lord..

THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
The Church Is Visible and Founded by Christ
The Church places this truth before you today: The true Church is not an invisible collection of private opinions, but the society founded by Our Lord, teaching, sanctifying, and governing in His name. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Apostolicity guards continuity of doctrine, worship, mission, and authority. The faithful do not invent the Church; they receive her from Christ through the Apostles.
The grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice constancy by keeping your Marian prayers with attention when novelty and feeling are absent.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the claim that a self-made religious fellowship can replace the Church Christ visibly founded. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Let dryness purify devotion from the demand to be consoled; remain faithful because God is worthy. Perform all your duties faithfully, correcting with special care the duty you habitually perform carelessly, as a servant of Jesus and Mary.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Robert Bellarmine.
Your resolution before God: Keep definite Advent mortifications quietly and faithfully today.
Carry this word: The way of the Lord is prepared by the honest removal of sin and self-will.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"The most noble and the most perfect victory is for a man to have the victory of himself."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book III, chapter 53, p. 159
Victory over others can feed pride; victory over self-will makes room for Christ. Ask for the grace to conquer the fault that most often conquers you.

Choose the fault by its frequency, not by how dramatic it appears. The repeated impatient tone, indulgent thought, delayed prayer, or unnecessary complaint may govern more of life than a rare great trial. Meet it today at its first small demand, while grace makes refusal possible.
Today's Practice: Choose the harder faithful act once, quietly and at once.
DAILY EXAMEN
Measure devotion by obedience, purity, prayer, and charity rather than by the feelings the day provided.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord Jesus Christ, awaken me from spiritual sloth and, through the hands of Thy holy Mother, prepare my heart for Thy coming.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

VERDAD DE LA FE
The Church Is Visible and Founded by Christ
The true Church is not an invisible collection of private opinions, but the society founded by Our Lord, teaching, sanctifying, and governing in His name.
Nota de la Iglesia: Apostolic
Defensor: St. Robert Bellarmine
Defensa católica: Apostolicity guards continuity of doctrine, worship, mission, and authority. The faithful do not invent the Church; they receive her from Christ through the Apostles.
Error que resistir: Resist the claim that a self-made religious fellowship can replace the Church Christ visibly founded.
O Lord Jesus Christ, awaken me from spiritual sloth and, through the hands of Thy holy Mother, prepare my heart for Thy coming.
EXAMEN DIARIO
- ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy?
- ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar?
- ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
