CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr 2028-12-13 - Advent - Double - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. Penance: repentance expressed through prayer, self-denial, reparation, and a real turning away from sin. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Gaudete Sunday lightens Advent without dissolving its penance. Catholic joy rests not in circumstances becoming easy, but in the nearness of the Lord and the certainty of His promises. Like St. John the Baptist, rejoice by decreasing before Christ, refusing self-display, and directing attention toward the Lamb of God. With Mary, turn from outward display toward the hidden sanctuary where God judges the heart. Ask Our Lady to guard the intention beneath today's prayer and labor. "All the glory of the King's daughter is within." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 11, citing Psalm 44:14 The world judges by what can be displayed, counted, and applauded. God sees the interior order from which a faithful act proceeds. Our Lady's glory is within because her faith, purity, charity, and consent belong wholly to Him before they become visible in any outward work. Do not use the interior life as an excuse for neglecting outward Catholic duty; Mary obeyed in deed. But begin where the deed receives its worth. Purify the intentions of your prayers and works today. Let them be done because God is God, not because the acts will preserve an image of yourself. OCTAVE CONTEXT Within the Common Octave of the Immaculate Conception - Common Octave PRACTICE Encourage persons who are weary with Catholic reasons for hope, and surrender the desire to receive notice in return. QUOTE OF THE DAY "Their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father who is in heaven." Our Lord Jesus Christ, Matthew 18:10, Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - December 13 At Syracuse, in Sicily, the birthday of St. Lucy, virgin and martyr, in the persecution of Diocletian. By the order of the ex-consul Paschasius, she was delivered to profligates, that her chastity might be insulted; but when they attempted to lead her away, they could not succeed, either with ropes or with many yoke of oxen. Then pouring hot pitch, rosin, and boiling oil over her body without injuring her, they finally plunged a sword into her throat, and thus completed her martyrdom. — In Armenia, the martyrdom of the holy martyrs Eustratius, Auxentius, Eugene, Mardarius, and Orestes, in the persecution of Diocletian. Eustratius was first subjected alone to barbarous torments under Lysias. Then he was conducted to Sebaste, where he was tortured together with Orestes under the governor Agricolaus, and being cast into a furnace, yielded up his soul; but Orestes being laid on a bed of red-hot iron, rendered his sould to God. The others were made to endure most grievous torments among the Arabraci, under the governor Lysias, and consummated their martyrdom in different manners. Their relics were afterwards carried to Rome, and placed with due honors in the church of St. Apollinaris. — Near Sardinia, in the island of Solta, the martyrdom of St. Antiochus, under the emperor Adrian. — At Cambrai, in France, St. Aubertus, bishop and confessor. — In Ponthieu, St. Judocus, confessor. — In Alsace, St. Othilia, abbess. — At Moulins, in France, the birthday of St. Jane Frances Fremiot de Chantal, foundress of the nuns of the Visitation of St. Mary, distinguished by the nobility of her birth, by the holiness she constantly manifested in four different states of life, and by the gift of miracles. She was placed among the saints by Clement XIII. Her sacred body was conveyed to Annecy, in Savoy, and interred with great pomp in the first church of her Order. By the command of Clement XIV., her festival is kept by the whole Church on the 21st of HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. Lucy Virgin and martyr of Syracuse. The Martyrology honors St. Lucy at Syracuse, virgin and martyr in the persecution of Diocletian. Delivered to men so that her chastity might be violated, she could not be moved; after torments with pitch, rosin, and boiling oil, she completed her martyrdom by the sword. Ask St. Lucy for light in a dark season. Purity is not weakness; it is a fortress when the soul belongs wholly to Christ. FROM MATINS The virgin whose chastity could not be moved. Matins - Second Nocturn - St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr Roman Breviary "They that live in chastity and piety are the temples of the Holy Ghost." - The Breviary presents St. Lucy as a Christian virgin of Syracuse whose prayer at St. Agatha's tomb obtained her mother's healing. - She gave her dowry to Christ's poor, confessed the Holy Ghost dwelling in the chaste and pious, and refused idolatry, threats, and the planned violation of her body. - Her martyrdom teaches that persecution may touch the body, but cannot command the will that belongs to Christ. Ask St. Lucy for chastity with courage and charity. Purity is not fragility; when joined to prayer and almsgiving, it becomes a pillar no tyrant can move. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - Prayer, Healing, and Alms for Christ's Poor Lucy was a maiden of Syracuse, the daughter of a noble Christian family. Her mother Eutychia, being afflicted with an issue of blood, went with her to Catania, to pray before the body of the blessed Agatha. Lucy, by her earnest prayers at the grave, obtained her mother's cure, through the intercession of Agatha, and then immediately begged her to give to Christ's poor the whole dowry which had been set apart for herself. As soon, therefore, as they returned to Syracuse, they sold the property, and distributed the money among the poor. Fifth Lesson - Confession before the Prefect When this came to the ears of one to whom her parents had betrothed her against her will, he accused Lucy before Paschasius the Prefect of being a Christian. The Prefect could not move her to commit idolatry, either by his entreaties or his threats; nay, the more he strove to persuade her, so much the bolder did she become in her confession. Then, seeing that he could prevail nothing, "words," saith he, "will cease when we come to blows." To whom the virgin answered, "God's servants will never want words, for the Lord Christ hath said: When ye shall stand before kings and governors, take no thought how or what ye shall speak, for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak, for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost Which speaketh in you." Sixth Lesson - The Temple of the Holy Ghost Could Not Be Moved Then Paschasius asked her saying, "Is the Holy Ghost in thee?" Whereto she answered, "They that live in chastity and piety are the temples of the Holy Ghost." "Then," said he, "I will send thee to be prostituted in a brothel, and get the Holy Ghost out of thee." To whom she made reply, "Thou canst not prostitute my will. If thou cause this poor body to be violated, the crown of my soul's purity will be brighter through suffering." Then he bade them take her to the place of shame, but by the power of God it became impossible to move her. Whereupon, being inflamed with anger, he had pitch, resin, and boiling oil poured upon her, and then set on fire. But the fire did not take hold upon her. Therefore he practised many other cruelties upon her, and at last thrust a sword through her neck. When Lucy had received this wound, she began to speak of the peace of the Church, which it should enjoy after the death of Diocletian and Maximian, and presently returned her soul into the hands of God. She testified on the thirteenth day of December. Her body was buried at Syracuse, but afterwards taken to Constantinople, and lastly to Venice. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Mary Is Mother of God and Mother of the Faithful The Church places this truth before you today: The Blessed Virgin Mary is truly Mother of God, and her maternal office belongs to the order of Christ's Incarnation, Passion, and grace. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Marian doctrine protects the truth about Christ: one divine Person, truly God and truly man, born of the Virgin Mother. The grace to be practiced is Virginal fortitude, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice purity of intention by choosing God's glory before praise, appearance, or self-satisfaction. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist every thin devotion that praises Mary while separating her from doctrine, sacrifice, and the life of grace. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing virginal fortitude when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept that the holiest part of an act may remain unseen and unrewarded by men. Before each important duty, name the intention plainly: for God's glory and the salvation or good of souls. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Cyril of Alexandria. Your resolution before God: Encourage persons who are weary with Catholic reasons for hope, and surrender the desire to receive notice in return. Carry this word: Holy joy grows as self diminishes and Christ becomes the soul's treasure. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "If we would every year overcome one vice, we should anon come to perfection." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 11, p. 20 À Kempis does not flatter the soul with the promise of instant perfection. He asks for patient warfare against a definite vice. Much spiritual discouragement comes from trying vaguely to become holy while refusing to name the repeated fault through which self-will governs ordinary life. Choose the vice by its actual frequency, not by how dramatic its name appears. It may be complaint, delay, curiosity, harsh judgment, vanity, impurity of thought, or refusal of prayer. Place it before God without excuse, ask Our Lady for the contrary virtue, and begin with its next small occasion. Today's Practice: Name your recurring vice and write down the contrary acts you will make whenever it appears. DAILY EXAMEN Examine not only what you did, but why you desired to do it. Give every mixed intention to Our Lady for purification. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, deliver me from gloomy self-occupation and give me the pure joy of Thy presence, Thy truth, and Thy coming. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. VERDAD DE LA FE Mary Is Mother of God and Mother of the Faithful The Blessed Virgin Mary is truly Mother of God, and her maternal office belongs to the order of Christ's Incarnation, Passion, and grace. Nota de la Iglesia: Holy Defensor: St. Cyril of Alexandria Defensa católica: Marian doctrine protects the truth about Christ: one divine Person, truly God and truly man, born of the Virgin Mother. Error que resistir: Resist every thin devotion that praises Mary while separating her from doctrine, sacrifice, and the life of grace. VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR Virginal fortitude. ORACIÓN O Lord Jesus Christ, deliver me from gloomy self-occupation and give me the pure joy of Thy presence, Thy truth, and Thy coming. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
