CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. John, Apostle and Evangelist 2028-12-27 - Christmastide - Double of the Second Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. Apostle: one sent by Christ with authority to preach and establish the Church; the title especially names the Twelve and St. Paul. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR St. John rests near the Heart of Jesus and speaks as an eyewitness of the Word made flesh. His purity, doctrine, and charity belong together: love does not dissolve commandments or reduce truth to feeling. Ask him to lead you through Mary to a more reverent knowledge of Christ and a more faithful keeping of His word. Enter the sanctuary of this day with reverence for what God formed in His Mother. Ask Our Lady to teach you reverence before the mysteries of God and custody over whatever would profane them. Worn out with age, he died in the sixty-eighth year after the passion of our Lord, and was buried near Ephesus. — At Alexandria, St. Maximus, bishop, who became a renowned and distinguished confessor of the faith. — At Constantinople, the holy confessors Theodore and Theophanes, brothers, who were brought up from their childhood in the monastery of St. Sabbas. The beloved disciple teaches the Church contemplative fidelity and truthful testimony. HIGHLIGHTED SAINT St. John Apostle, Evangelist, and witness of charity and truth. He teaches charity in truth, fidelity beneath the Cross, hatred of falsehood, and perseverance in the doctrine received from Christ. Let St. John keep charity exact and tender. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - The Evangelist against the Heretics The Apostle John "whom Jesus loved" was a son of Zebedee, and brother of the Apostle James, who was beheaded by Herod soon after our Lord suffered. He was the last of the Evangelists to write his Gospel, which he published at the request of the Bishops of Asia, against Cerinthus and other heretics, and particularly against the then spreading doctrine of the Ebionites, who asserted that Christ had had no existence before Mary. It was therefore needful for the Evangelist to declare His Eternal and Divine Generation. Fifth Lesson - Patmos, the Apocalypse, and the Churches of Asia In the fourteenth year after Nero, Domitian stirred up the second persecution, and John was exiled to the island of Patmos, where he wrote his Apocalypse, which hath been explained by Justin the Martyr and Irenaeus. When Domitian was killed, the Senate annulled all his acts, on account of his savage cruelty, and the Apostle returned to Ephesus, during the reign of Nerva. He remained at Ephesus until the time of Trajan, and founded and governed all the Churches of Asia. There, in an extreme old age, he died, in the sixty-eighth year after the Lord's passion, and was buried near the city. Sixth Lesson - My Little Children, Love One Another The Blessed Evangelist John lived at Ephesus down to an extreme old age, and, at length, when he was with difficulty carried to the Church, and was not able to exhort the congregation at length, he was used simply to say at each meeting, "My little children, love one another." At last the disciples and brethren were weary with hearing these words continually, and asked him, "Master, wherefore ever sayest thou this only?" Whereto he replied to them, (worthy of John,) "It is the commandment of the Lord, and if this only be done, it is enough." THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Doctrine Develops Without Becoming Another Doctrine The Church places this truth before you today: True growth in Catholic doctrine preserves the same meaning and the same judgment; it unfolds what was received, without changing the faith into a novelty. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Unity of faith is protected when later expression remains identical in substance with what the Church has always taught. The grace to be practiced is Charity governed by truth, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Reverence sees created holiness as God's work and returns admiration to His glory. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the modernist notion that dogma may change its meaning according to the religious needs of an age. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing charity governed by truth when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the discipline required to protect purity and recollection from the day's intrusions. Perform your sacred and ordinary duties without haste or carelessness, giving full attention to the duty now before you. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Vincent of Lerins. Your resolution before God: Read a passage from St. John's Gospel and obey every command of Our Lord found there. Carry this word: The beloved disciple teaches that true love sees, believes, testifies, and obeys. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "I had liefer be poor with Thee, than rich without Thee." Prefer His friendship, His truth, and His Cross to every advantage gained by compromise. Temptation often presents the price first and hides the loss. It tells you what obedience may cost in comfort, reputation, companionship, or opportunity, while concealing the poverty of possessing these things without peace with God. Look beyond the immediate bargain and choose with eternity in view. Today's Practice: Refuse every compromise made for comfort, gain, or human respect. DAILY EXAMEN Ask where familiarity made you careless with prayer, holy things, or another soul made in God's image. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, through St. John the Apostle, purify my heart, strengthen my faith, and make my charity faithful to Thy commandments. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
