CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Wednesday of Holy Week 2030-04-17 - Passiontide - Feria of the First Class - violet PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Wednesday of Holy Week is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Anicetus, Pope and Martyr on this date. The secondary saint and Breviary sermon or lesson panels below come from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Ecclesiastical or ecclesial: belonging or relating to the Church; the words refer to her life, law, worship, ministers, or common mission. Purgative way: the stage of spiritual growth in which a person, helped by grace, concentrates especially on turning from serious sin and correcting disordered habits. Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair. Ask Our Lady to free your best actions from the subtle proprietorship that claims spiritual goods for self. Cede the value and fruit of every good work to Jesus through Mary, asking freedom from spiritual ownership and hidden self-interest. "There is no other practice equal to this for enabling us to get rid with facility of a certain proprietorship, which imperceptibly insinuates itself into our best actions. Our good Jesus gives us this great grace in recompense for the heroic and disinterested action of making a cession to Him, by the hands of His holy Mother, of all the value of our good works." The soul may treat prayers, penances, merits, consolations, achievements, apostolic fruit, reputation for virtue, and even suffering as private capital. Total consecration cedes their value to Jesus through Mary and strikes at this hidden self-love. Cession does not abolish responsible stewardship, prudence, justice, duties, or the examination of fruit. It removes possessive dominion and self-seeking. Work diligently, pray fervently, repair defects, and seek holiness; then release control over recognition, visible results, beneficiaries, consolation, and recompense. PRACTICE Read Matthew 26:14-25. Ask what comfort, approval, money, or fear tempts you to compromise fidelity, then reject every concealed consent before the Sacred Triduum begins. Ask with the apostles, 'Is it I, Lord?' Do not remain in vague guilt. Name the real compromise, repent of it, and choose the act of fidelity that answers it. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Judas's outward betrayal is preceded by an inward bargain in which money is preferred to fidelity to Christ. At the supper, Our Lord names the betrayal and gives Judas a final warning. Divine knowledge does not remove human responsibility or make repentance impossible. The sorrow of the other apostles teaches the soul to examine itself humbly rather than assume that grave infidelity is always another person's danger. Error corrected: The presumption that a person can protect secret consent to sin without eventually wounding fidelity in outward action. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT Wednesday of Holy Week Judas bargains while Our Lord prepares the Pasch. Wednesday of Holy Week places the betrayal of Judas beside Our Lord's deliberate preparation for the Last Supper and His approaching Passion. Judas asks what Christ's enemies will give him and accepts thirty pieces of silver. At the table, Our Lord exposes the betrayal without ceasing to offer the traitor a final warning. Do not study Judas only to condemn him. Let his bargain warn you to name the lesser goods for which you are tempted to disobey Christ, and return to Our Lord before the choice hardens. SECONDARY SAINT ASSIGNED TO THIS DATE St. Anicetus Pope and martyr who guarded the teaching received from the apostles. St. Anicetus is honored in the Roman calendar as pope and martyr. His feast places before the faithful the cost of Roman office and the duty of guarding apostolic faith. The Church is visible in history, carried by real shepherds who must answer to Christ. Ask St. Anicetus for Catholic steadiness about authority. True office is not made holy by comfort, but by fidelity to the charge received from Christ. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Unity Without Truth Is Not Catholic Unity The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic unity is unity in the faith, sacraments, worship, and lawful order of the Church. It is not agreement to ignore contradiction. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church unites by truth and grace; she cannot found unity on silence about error. The grace to be practiced is Sincere contrition and fidelity before the Passion, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice disinterested stewardship by laboring faithfully while surrendering recognition, control, consolation, reward, and visible success. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false ecumenism and every peace that asks doctrine to step aside. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing sincere contrition and fidelity before the Passion when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept obscurity, misunderstood effort, unseen fruit, delayed results, and benefits assigned beyond personal knowledge or preference. Perform every prayer, penance, duty, and charitable work completely, then release its value and outcome through Mary's hands. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is Pope Pius XI. Your resolution before God: Read Matthew 26:14-25. Let the repair of neglected duties become proof that truth has entered the will. Today's Practice: Begin completing the neglected duties you have discussed more than performed, ordering them justly and without further excuse. DAILY EXAMEN Examine attachment to spiritual goods and reputation, make contrition for self-appropriation, and renew the complete cession. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, show me the sins I excuse, the occasions I keep near, and the attachments I protect. Give me contrition without despair and amendment without delay. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
