CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Feria of Eastertide 2030-05-21 - Eastertide - Feria - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season. Precious Blood: the human Blood of Jesus Christ, united to His divine Person and poured out on the Cross as the price of our redemption. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Keep theological order while receiving the instrument God freely chose in His work of sanctification. Adore the Holy Ghost as God and ask to cooperate humbly with every grace He gives through the order He has established. "But what we want to say is, that the Holy Ghost chose to make use of our Blessed Lady, though He had no absolute need of her, to bring His fruitfulness into action, by producing in her and by her Jesus Christ in His members; a mystery of grace unknown to even the wisest and most spiritual among Christians." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 21 St. Louis de Montfort again closes the door against exaggeration: the Holy Ghost has no absolute need of Mary. Her office rests upon His sovereign choice. That truth protects both divine majesty and authentic Marian devotion from confusion. The soul must learn the same humility. God does not need our talents, plans, consolations, or reputation, yet He truly commands our cooperation. Serve diligently without imagining yourself indispensable; depend entirely upon grace without using dependence as permission for laziness. PRACTICE Give thanks for the Precious Blood and guard every known occasion where grace could be wasted. QUOTE OF THE DAY "His mother saith to the ministers: Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye." Holy Scripture, John 2:5, Original Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - May 21 In Mauritania (Morocco), the birthday of the holy martyrs Timothy, Polius, and Eutychius, deacons, who merited to be crowned together for dispensing the word of God in that region. — At Caesarea, in Cappadocia, the birthday of the holy martyrs Polieuctus, Victorius, and Donatus. — At Cordova, St. Secundinus, martyr. — The same day, the holy martyrs Synesius and Theopompus. — At Caesarea Philippi, the holy martyrs Nicostratus and Antiochus, tribunes, with other soldiers. — The same day St. Valens, bishop, who was put to death with three boys. — At Alexandria, the commemoration of the holy martyrs Secundus, a priest, and others, whom the Arian bishop George caused to be barbarously killed during the holy days of Pentecost, under the emperor Constantius. — Also, the saintly bishops and priests, who, being banished by the Arians, merited to be associated with holy confessors. — At Nice, in France, St. Hospitius, confessor, distinguished by the virtue of abstinence and the spirit of prophecy. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church The Church places this truth before you today: The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded. The grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice humble cooperation: labor faithfully while knowing that every supernatural fruit belongs first to grace. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept being an instrument rather than the owner of the work, surrendering both credit and control of results. Use all the abilities and opportunities God has entrusted to you, then return the entire fruit to Him through Mary. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. John Fisher. Your resolution before God: Give thanks for the Precious Blood and guard every known occasion where grace could be wasted. Carry this word: The Precious Blood teaches the price of grace. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "If we would every year overcome one vice, we should anon come to perfection." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 11, p. 20 Thomas à Kempis does not flatter the soul with the promise of instant perfection. He asks for patient warfare against a definite vice. Much spiritual discouragement comes from trying vaguely to become holy while refusing to name the repeated fault through which self-will governs ordinary life. Choose the vice by its actual frequency, not by how dramatic its name appears. It may be complaint, delay, curiosity, harsh judgment, vanity, impurity of thought, or refusal of prayer. Place it before God without excuse, ask Our Lady for the contrary virtue, and begin with its next small occasion. Today's Practice: Name your recurring vice and write down the contrary acts you will make whenever it appears. DAILY EXAMEN Ask where you acted as though success depended wholly upon you, or where false passivity excused neglected duty. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord Jesus Christ, by Thy Precious Blood cleanse my conscience, strengthen my will, and teach me never to treat grace as cheap. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. VERDAD DE LA FE The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises. Nota de la Iglesia: One Defensor: St. John Fisher Defensa católica: Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded. Error que resistir: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church. ORACIÓN O Lord Jesus Christ, by Thy Precious Blood cleanse my conscience, strengthen my will, and teach me never to treat grace as cheap. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
