CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Fifth Sunday after Easter 2030-05-26 - Eastertide - Semi-Double Sunday - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Fifth Sunday after Easter is the principal observance today. The calendar also preserves St. Philip Neri, Confessor on this date. The secondary saint panel below comes from that secondary observance. That material adds another traditional lesson for the date; it does not replace the principal observance. Ascension: Christ's return to the Father in His glorified humanity forty days after the Resurrection. Tract: in a source title, a written commentary or treatise; in the Mass, the same word can name a solemn chant sung in place of the Alleluia during penitential seasons. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR Christ is risen, has ascended in His glorified humanity, and reigns in Heaven. The Church and her members still suffer on earth, but their trials do not overturn His victory. Christian hope is therefore more than an encouraging feeling: it trusts Christ's promise of resurrection and eternal life and gives the faithful a reason to persevere in obedience today. Ask for the childlike faith that receives Catholic truth humbly while remaining ready to learn its foundations in Scripture and Tradition. Ask for a docile mind that loves Catholic truth, learns it faithfully, and never uses complexity to evade obedience. "But as I speak particularly to the poor and simple, who being of good-will, and having more faith than the common run of scholars, believe more simply and so more meritoriously, I content myself with putting out the truth quite simply, without stopping to quote the original passages, which they would not understand." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 26 St. Louis de Montfort is not praising ignorance, credulity, or contempt for sacred learning. In this very paragraph he explains that his teaching can be confirmed from Holy Scripture and the Fathers. He adapts the manner of instruction so that souls of good will may receive substantial truth without an academic obstacle. Simplicity of faith is the opposite of self-sufficient cleverness, but it must never become indifference to doctrine. Receive what the Church teaches, seek sound reasons according to your capacity and duties, refuse novelty and private invention, and submit every conclusion to the revealed Faith handed down by the Church. PRACTICE Name your spiritual and temporal needs. Ask the Father for them through Christ, placing every temporal need beneath God's will and eternal salvation. Let Rogation prayer become purified prayer. Ask boldly, but ask as a Catholic: for grace, salvation, holiness, and every temporal need only under the rule of eternal life. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE Doctrine Develops Without Becoming Another Doctrine The Church places this truth before you today: True growth in Catholic doctrine preserves the same meaning and the same judgment; it unfolds what was received, without changing the faith into a novelty. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Unity of faith is protected when later expression remains identical in substance with what the Church has always taught. The grace to be practiced is Filial prayer in the Name of Jesus, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice teachability by receiving sound correction, studying what your duties require, and refusing both intellectual pride and careless credulity. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the modernist notion that dogma may change its meaning according to the religious needs of an age. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing filial prayer in the Name of Jesus when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the labor of learning, the humility of admitting ignorance, and the duty of abandoning opinions contrary to the Faith. Read, speak, and judge according to sound Catholic sources, explaining truth plainly without weakening or disguising it. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Vincent of Lerins. Your resolution before God: Name your spiritual and temporal needs. Ask the Father for them through Christ, placing every temporal need beneath God's will and eternal salvation. Carry this word: Prayer in Christ's Name seeks what leads the soul toward God and eternal life. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "In silence and quietness of heart a devout soul profiteth much and learneth the hidden sentences of Scripture." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 20, p. 33 Holy silence is not the absence of sound alone. A room may be quiet while the mind repeats injuries, imagines arguments, and pursues every rumor. Thomas à Kempis asks for quietness of heart: the recollection in which the soul stops scattering itself and becomes able to receive what God has already spoken. Give Scripture a little protected ground today. Read a few verses slowly, preferably from the day's Gospel, and resist the urge to hurry toward commentary or novelty. Ask what God reveals, what He commands, and what response must be made before the words are allowed to pass. Today's Practice: Keep ten quiet minutes with the day's Gospel, asking what truths it teaches and what commands require your obedience. DAILY EXAMEN Examine whether pride rejected simple truth or laziness refused the study needed to understand and defend it. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Father, teach me to ask through Thy Son with confidence, humility, and submission to Thy will. Purify my desires so that my petitions may serve salvation. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
