CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Friday after the Octave of the Ascension 2030-06-07 - Eastertide - Semi-Double - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Octave: an eight-day extension of a major feast, allowing the Church to continue praying over the same mystery. Ascension: Christ's return to the Father in His glorified humanity forty days after the Resurrection. Corpus Christi: the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, celebrating His true presence in the Holy Eucharist. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR In the parable of the great supper, invited guests prefer possessions, business, and domestic concerns to the host's call. Heard within the Corpus Christi octave, the warning is exact: earthly duties are real, but none may become a respectable excuse for neglecting God's banquet and the worship He commands. Welcome Our Lady as Queen of the interior life, where the reign of Jesus Christ must first overcome sin and self-will. Honor Jesus as King and Our Lady as Queen by grace, asking that their holy order govern the whole interior life. "Mary is the Queen of heaven and earth by grace, as Jesus is the King of them by nature and by conquest." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 38 The distinction is exact and necessary: Jesus is King by His divine nature and by His redeeming conquest; Mary is Queen by grace. Her glory is never independent of His. Her interior reign serves His kingship by forming loyal subjects whose faith, worship, morals, and duties belong to Him without reserve. Exterior honors are fitting, but St. Louis de Montfort says that Our Lady's kingdom is principally within the soul. Crowning an image while allowing an uncrowned passion to rule the heart is a contradiction. Give her the interior homage of repentance, recollection, purity, humility, obedience, and perseverance. It must be confessed, defended, and lived before men when duty requires it. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Church is sent to all nations. Her public confession cannot be reduced to hidden feeling or private preference. The grace to be practiced is Watchful witness in expectation of the Holy Ghost, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice loyalty of heart by refusing every thought, desire, affection, or compromise that rebels against Christ's commandments. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist cowardly peace when silence would imply consent to error. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing watchful witness in expectation of the Holy Ghost when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive the discipline needed to dethrone pride and appetite, and persevere when interior reform is slow or painful. Join rightful exterior Marian devotion to complete interior amendment, sustained prayer, sound doctrine, and fidelity to every duty. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of catholic; the witness placed beside it is St. Athanasius. Your resolution before God: Read Luke 14:16-24 and remove the concrete excuses that have weakened prayer, worship, or Eucharistic hunger. Put the day's lesser goods beneath the one necessary end. Vanity does not always announce itself through great ambition. Ask God to show you the attachment that is quietly asking to be treated as necessary. Today's Practice: Renounce needless comforts whenever they compete with prayer, duty, or charity, and offer the sacrifices to God through Mary. DAILY EXAMEN Ask which ruler actually commanded the day—Christ or self—and make sincere reparation for every interior revolt. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, thank Thee for calling me to the banquet of grace. Expose the respectable excuses by which I place lesser goods before worship, and make my answer prompt and grateful. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
