CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Beheading of St. John the Baptist 2030-08-29 - Time after Pentecost - Greater Double - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Passion of Christ: the sufferings and death Jesus freely accepted for our salvation, from His agony in Gethsemane through His Crucifixion. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Time after Pentecost is the long school of the Holy Ghost. The fire given at Pentecost must become doctrine believed, worship guarded, commandments kept, homes ordered, tongues governed, and charity practiced without novelty or disorder. Offer Our Lady body, soul, temporal goods, spiritual goods, past, present, future, nature, grace, and glory without reserve. Renew the complete gift of body, soul, possessions, spiritual goods, time, relationships, labor, suffering, and future to Jesus through Mary. "This devotion consists, then, in giving ourselves entirely and altogether to our Lady, in order to belong entirely and altogether to Jesus by her. We must give her; (1) our body, with all its senses and its members; (2) our soul, with all its powers; (3) the exterior goods of fortune, whether present or to come; (4) our interior and spiritual goods, which are our merits and our virtues, and our good works, past, present, and future." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 121 Total consecration admits no protected province. Body and senses, soul and faculties, present and future possessions, merits, virtues, and good works are entrusted so the person may belong entirely to Jesus through Mary. Ownership gives way to stewardship beneath God's commandments, Providence, and the obligations of state. This breadth forbids both vague symbolism and selective surrender. Govern sight, hearing, speech, appetite, imagination, memory, intellect, will, time, money, home, labor, influence, prayer, penance, and suffering as consecrated goods. Eternity is the horizon, and belonging to Jesus through Mary is the reward sought. PRACTICE Fulfill your ordinary duties promptly and offer them for the glory of God. QUOTE OF THE DAY "It is not lawful for thee to have her." St. John the Baptist, Matthew 14:4, Douay-Rheims ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - August 29 The beheading of St. John the Baptist, who was put to death by Herod about the feast of Easter. However, the solemn commemoration takes place today, when his venerable head was found for the second time. It was afterwards solemnly carried to Rome, where it is kept in the church of St. Silvester, near Campo Marzio, and honored by the people with the greatest devotion. — At Rome, on Mount Aventine, the birthday of St. Sabina, martyr. Under the emperor Adrian, she was struck with the sword, and thus obtained the palm of martyrdom. — Also, at Rome, St. Candida, virgin and martyr, whose body was transferred to the church of St. Praxedes by pope Paschal I. — At Antioch, in Syria, the birthday of the holy martyrs Nicæas and Paul. — At Constantinople, the holy martyrs Hypatius, an Asiatic bishop, and Andrew, a priest, who for the worship of holy images, under Leo the Isaurian, after having their beards besmirched with pitch and set on fire, and the skin of their heads torn off, were beheaded. — At Perugia, St. Euthymius, a Roman, who fled from the persecution of Diocletian with his wife and his son Crescentius, and there rested in the Lord. — At Metz, St. Adelphus, bishop and confessor. — At Paris the demise of St. Merry, priest. — In England, St. Sebbi, king. — At Smyrna, the birthday of St. Basilla. — In the vicinity of Troyes, St. Sabina, a virgin, celebrated for virtues and miracles. GOSPEL OF THE DAY It is not lawful for thee. Beheading of St. John the Baptist - Mark 6:17-29 "John said to Herod: It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife." Ask St. John for a clean tongue and a steady conscience. Truth spoken for God may cost peace with men, but it keeps peace with Heaven. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches St. John dies because truth about sin cannot be silenced by rank, passion, or human respect. The martyr's head is taken, but his witness remains whole before God. Error corrected: The cowardice that calls silence prudence when souls need warning. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? HIGHLIGHTED SAINT The Beheading of St. John the Baptist The forerunner slain for the moral law. St. John the Baptist suffered death because he rebuked Herod's unlawful union and would not bend the law of God before passion, courtly pressure, or royal power. Herod feared him, Herodias hated him, and a rash oath became the occasion of murder. His martyrdom teaches that penance, purity, and the moral law belong to the public witness of the Church. Let St. John cleanse the tongue and the conscience. The Catholic must not become harsh, but neither may he become mute before sin. FROM MATINS The prophet slain for saying: It is not lawful. Matins - Second Nocturn - Beheading of St. John the Baptist St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan "The guilty passed upon their judge the sentence of death." - The Breviary places the martyrdom of St. John Baptist before the Church as a witness to public moral truth. - St. Ambrose teaches the horror of the scene: a righteous man murdered by adulterers, truth condemned by guilt, and a prophet's death made the reward of a dance. - The feast teaches that unlawful union does not become lawful through rank, desire, fear of shame, political pressure, rash oaths, or public entertainment. Ask St. John Baptist for clean courage. Charity must not flatter sin, and moral truth must be spoken without cruelty and without surrender. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Fourth Lesson - A Righteous Man Murdered by Adulterers The Lesson is taken from the Book upon Virgins, written by St Ambrose, Bishop [of Milan.] (ii. 6.) We must not hurry by the record of the Blessed Baptist John. We must ask what he was, and by whom, and why, and how, and when he was slain. He was a righteous man murdered by adulterers. The guilty passed upon their judge the sentence of death. Moreover, the death of the Prophet was the fee of a dancing-girl. And lastly, there was a feature about it from which even savages shrink—the order for completing the atrocity was given amid the merriment of a dinner-party. From banquet to prison, from prison to banquet—that was the course run by the servants of the murderer. How many horrors does this simple crime embrace within its details! Fifth Lesson - The Prophet's Head Served at a Banquet Who is there, that, on seeing the messenger hasten from the dinner-table to the prison, would not have forthwith concluded that he carried an order for the Prophet's release. If any one had heard that it was Herod's birth-day, and that he was giving a great feast, and that he had offered a damsel the choice of whatever she listed, and that thereupon a messenger had been sent to John's dungeon—if any one, I say, had heard this, what would he have supposed? He would have concluded that the damsel had asked and obtained John's freedom. What have executions in common with dinners? or death with gaiety? While the banquet was going on, the Prophet was hurried to death, by an order from the reveller whom he had not troubled even by a prayer for release. He was slain with the sword, and his head was served up in a plate. This was the new dish demanded by a cruelty which the Feast had been powerless to glut. Sixth Lesson - The Silent Witness Still Feared Look, savage King, look at a decoration which suiteth well with thy banquet! Put out thine hand, so as to lose no part of the luxury of cruelty, and let the streams of the sacred blood run between thy fingers. Thine hunger the dinner hath been unable to satisfy, thy cups have not been able to quench thine inhuman thirst—suck, suck the blood which the still palpitating veins are discharging from the place where the neck has been severed! Look at the eyes! Even in death they remain the eyes of a witness of thine uncleanness, but they are closing themselves upon the spectacle of thy pleasures. Those eyes indeed are shutting—but it seems not so much from the laws of natural death, as from horror at the scene of thine enjoyment. The golden mouth, whose bloodless lips are silent now, can repeat no more the denunciation which thou couldest not bear to hear—and still thou art afraid of it! THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Four Marks Are Not Decorative The Church places this truth before you today: The Church must be one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic because she bears the identity Christ gave her, not because men assign those titles by preference. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The marks are tests of recognition. They prevent the faithful from confusing religious intensity, social size, antiquarian taste, or institutional claims with the true Church. The grace to be practiced is Fearless moral clarity, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice total stewardship by using every natural, temporal, and spiritual good according to God's will and the duties of your state. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist treating the marks as poetic language detached from visible doctrine, worship, and apostolic continuity. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing fearless moral clarity when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Surrender control, possessiveness, bodily indulgence, vanity, and every reserve that contradicts entire belonging to Jesus through Mary. Use every faculty, possession, opportunity, prayer, sacrifice, and duty as consecrated property ordered to God's glory and souls. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of one; the witness placed beside it is St. Robert Bellarmine. Your resolution before God: Fulfill your ordinary duties promptly and offer them for the glory of God. Carry this word: Grace is guarded by ordinary fidelity. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Ask not who said this, but take heed what is said." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 5, p. 14 Truth does not become true through fashion, applause, or a celebrated name. Test what you hear by revelation and the perennial teaching of the Church. Yet Thomas à Kempis also rebukes the curiosity that collects authorities without receiving their doctrine. Listen for the truth God is giving through a trustworthy witness, and then permit that truth to correct you. A holy author's name should not become decoration around an unchanged life. Today's Practice: Reject claims based on novelty or popularity and ask what the Church has always taught. DAILY EXAMEN Review the full inventory of the gift, repent wherever self resumed ownership, and return everything without reserve. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Lord, strengthen the little duties of this day with Thy grace, that nothing entrusted to me may be wasted through negligence or vanity. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady. ORACIÓN O Lord, strengthen the little duties of this day with Thy grace, that nothing entrusted to me may be wasted through negligence or vanity. EXAMEN DIARIO - ¿Por qué gracia o misericordia debo dar gracias a Dios hoy? - ¿Qué pecado, falta, deber descuidado o resistencia a la gracia debo confesar? - ¿Qué propósito concreto llevaré a mañana?
