CITY OF GOD IN EXILE
Feria in Time after Pentecost
2030-10-31 - Time after Pentecost - Feria - green
PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY
Feria in Time after Pentecost is the principal observance in the Office today. The calendar also keeps Vigil of All Saints as the preparatory Mass before tomorrow's feast, and the formation panels below draw from that vigil. A vigil prepares the faithful for a feast without replacing the day's principal Office.
Occult practices: attempts to seek hidden knowledge or spiritual power through magic, divination, spirits, or other means forbidden by the First Commandment.
Vigil: a day or period of prayerful preparation before a feast; it teaches the faithful to prepare instead of arriving spiritually unready.
Feria: a weekday without a higher feast of its own; its prayers usually follow the current liturgical season.
The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears.
TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR
The Vigil of All Saints turns the pilgrim away from fascination with darkness and toward the innumerable company made holy by the Blood of the Lamb. The Church prepares for heaven with prayer, sobriety, and remembrance of death—not with superstition or play at occult evil. Ask Our Lady, Queen of All Saints, to keep your household beneath Christ and to make sanctity its true desire. Before going farther, stand with St. Louis de Montfort beneath the infinite majesty and complete sufficiency of God. Adore the Blessed Trinity first, then receive with gratitude the Mother whom God freely chose to employ in His works of grace.

"I avow, with all the Church, that Mary, being a mere creature that has come from the hands of the Most High, is in comparison with His Infinite Majesty less than an atom; or rather, she is nothing at all, because only He is “He who is” (Exod. 3:14); consequently that grand Lord, always independent and sufficient to Himself, never had, and has not now, any absolute need of the holy Virgin for the accomplishment of His will and for the manifestation of His glory. He has but to will in order to do everything."
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 14

St. Louis de Montfort pauses before teaching Mary's necessity in God's freely chosen order because devotion must remain beneath theology. Mary is a creature. God alone is Being of Himself, infinitely perfect and sufficient. He did not employ Our Lady because His power lacked anything; He chose her because His wisdom and goodness willed this beautiful order.

This truth makes devotion both safer and deeper. You do not approach Mary as a rival source of grace or an easier substitute for God. You honor the creature precisely by reverencing the Creator's choice. Let every Marian prayer end where she desires it to end: in adoration of the Blessed Trinity and more perfect servitude to Jesus Christ.

PRACTICE
Pause at midday for a brief act of faith, hope, charity, and contrition.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
"Give me wisdom the assistant of thy seats, and repel me not from thy children. […] Send her from thy holy heavens, and from the seat of thy greatness, that she may be with me, and may labour with me, that I may know what is acceptable with thee."
Holy Scripture, Wisdom 9:4, 10, Original Douay-Rheims

ROMAN MARTYROLOGY - October 31
The vigil of All Saints. — At Rome, the birthday of blessed Nemesius, deacon, and his daughter, the virgin Lucilla. As they could not be prevailed upon to abandon the faith of Christ, they were beheaded on the 25th of August by order of the emperor Valerian. Their bodies were buried by the blessed pope Stephen, and afterwards more decently entombed on this day, on the Appian road, by blessed Xystus. Gregory V. translated them into the sacristy of Santa Maria Nova, together with the Saints Symphronius, Olympius, tribune, Exuperia, his wife, and Theodulus, his son, who, being all converted by the exertions of Symphronius, and baptized by the same St. Stephen, had been crowned with martyrdom. These holy bodies were found there during the Pontificate of Gregory XIII., and placed more honorably beneath the altar of the same church, on the 8th of December. — The same day, the Saints Ampliatus, Urbanus and Narcissus, who are mentioned by St. Paul in his epistle to the Romans. They were put to death by the Jews and Gentiles for the Gospel of Christ. — At Saint-Quentin, in France, St. Quinctinus, Roman citizen and senator, who endured martyrdom under the emperor Maximian. By the revelation of an angel, his body was found incorrupt after the lapse of fifty-five years. — At Constantinople, St. Stachis, bishop, who was consecrated first bishop of that city by the blessed apostle Andrew. — At Milan, St. Antoninus, bishop and confessor. — At Ratisbon, St. Wolfgang, bishop.

HIGHLIGHTED SAINT
Vigil of All Saints
The pilgrim preparing to behold the citizens of heaven.
The older Roman calendar keeps October 31 as the Vigil of All Saints, a day of sober preparation before the Church rejoices in the whole company of the blessed.
The vigil turns Christian attention toward sanctity, judgment, death, and the heavenly homeland. It leaves no room for fascination with occult evil, superstition, or entertainment that makes darkness appear harmless.
Keep watch facing the City of God. The Christian answer to darkness is neither fear nor play, but faith in Christ, prayer, and desire to join His saints.

Martyrology - Martyrology Notice - Vigil of All Saints
Roman Martyrology
"As they could not be prevailed upon to abandon the faith of Christ, they were beheaded."
- The Martyrology first announces the Vigil of All Saints, turning the evening toward preparation for the whole company of heaven.
- It then remembers the deacon Nemesius and his virgin daughter Lucilla, who could not be induced to abandon the Faith, together with other martyrs and apostolic disciples who suffered for the Gospel.
- The Christian vigil therefore rejects superstition, occult fascination, and amusement with evil. It keeps watch through faith in Christ, prayer, sobriety, and desire to imitate the saints.
Prepare for All Saints as a Catholic household. Remove every treatment of occult evil as harmless play; pray for final perseverance, practice recollection, and ask the Queen of All Saints to lead the home toward Christ's heavenly city.

THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE
Obedience Serves Truth
The Church places this truth before you today: Catholic obedience is a virtue ordered to God and His truth. It is not servility before contradiction or unlawful command. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Authority is real because it comes from God, but it remains ministerial. It cannot command against the faith it exists to guard.
The grace to be practiced is Sober preparation for holiness and heaven, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice theological order: worship God alone, honor Our Lady according to His will, and let every devotion serve union with Christ.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both rebellion against true authority and false obedience to commands that betray doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing sober preparation for holiness and heaven when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Renounce both irreverent neglect of Mary and sentimental exaggeration; truth is a narrower and more beautiful road than either distortion. End your Marian prayers with deliberate adoration and obedience to Jesus Christ.
The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Thomas Aquinas.
Your resolution before God: Pause at midday for a brief act of faith, hope, charity, and contrition.
Carry this word: Prayer keeps the day from becoming self-ruled.
THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR
"Learn now to die to the world, that thou mayest then live with Christ."
Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book I, chapter 23, p. 41
Christian death to self is not despair but preparation for life with Christ. Refuse the command of every attachment that draws you from God's will, beginning with the strongest.

The world tells you to preserve every comfort and construct an identity from passing things. Christ teaches you to travel lightly toward eternity. You need not despise God's gifts; receive them gratefully, but practice being able to surrender them when His will, charity, or duty requires it.
Today's Practice: Accept unnoticed sacrifices without seeking relief or recognition.
DAILY EXAMEN
Ask whether your devotion magnified God, diminished self-will, and made obedience to Christ more exact.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
PRAYER
O Lord, recollect my scattered thoughts, govern my words, and teach me to return to Thee before the noise of the day rules my soul.
DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM
A brief rule to keep every day:
Begin with morning prayer
Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind.
Keep the Angelus
Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation.
Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament
Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
Return to Jesus and Mary
Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation.
Pray the Rosary
Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain.
End with night prayer and examen
Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.

VIRTUD QUE PRACTICAR
Sober preparation for holiness and heaven.
Ponga la virtud en práctica de este modo: Ask Our Lady, Queen of All Saints, to prepare your household for tomorrow's feast.
- ¿Dónde será probada esta virtud en mis deberes reales de hoy?
- ¿Qué mera apariencia natural podría confundir con la virtud misma?
- ¿Qué acto concreto realizaré antes de la noche?
