CITY OF GOD IN EXILE St. Thomas, Apostle 2030-12-21 - Advent - Double of the Second Class - red PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Apostle: one sent by Christ with authority to preach and establish the Church; the title especially names the Twelve and St. Paul. Apostolic: belonging to the faith, mission, teaching, or authority handed down from Christ through the apostles. Godhead and Manhood: Godhead means the divine nature; Christ's Manhood means the complete human nature He took in the Incarnation. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR St. Thomas passed through doubt to the adoration, 'My Lord and my God,' and then carried apostolic witness outward. His wound was healed not by inventing a Christ acceptable to himself, but by submitting to the risen Christ before him. Ask the Dayspring from on high to scatter intellectual darkness and make your faith confess, worship, and obey. Keep theological order while receiving the instrument God freely chose in His work of sanctification. Adore the Holy Ghost as God and ask to cooperate humbly with every grace He gives through the order He has established. "But what we want to say is, that the Holy Ghost chose to make use of our Blessed Lady, though He had no absolute need of her, to bring His fruitfulness into action, by producing in her and by her Jesus Christ in His members; a mystery of grace unknown to even the wisest and most spiritual among Christians." God does not need our talents, plans, consolations, or reputation, yet He truly commands our cooperation. Serve diligently without imagining yourself indispensable; depend entirely upon grace without using dependence as permission for laziness. GOSPEL OF THE DAY My Lord, and my God. St. Thomas, Apostle - John 20:24-29 "Thomas answered, and said to him: My Lord, and my God." Bring your wounded faith to Christ without theatrics. He can heal doubt, but He also calls the soul onward into blessed belief. THE CHURCH'S READING OF THE GOSPEL What This Gospel Teaches Our Lord stoops to heal Thomas's unbelief, but blesses the faith that believes without seeing. The apostles testified to a real event they saw and touched: Jesus rose bodily from death. St. Thomas therefore addresses the risen Jesus in worship as 'My Lord and my God.' Error corrected: The demand to touch everything before believing what God has revealed. - Where does this error tempt me in practice? - What act does this Gospel require of me today? FULL BREVIARY LESSONS Seventh Lesson - The Doubt Permitted by Divine Mercy At that time: Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. And so on. Dearly beloved brethren, what is it in this passage which particularly claimeth our attention? Think ye that it was by accident that this chosen Apostle was not with them when Jesus came? or, when he came, heard? or, when he heard, doubted? or, when he doubted, felt? or when he had felt, believed? All these things were not accidental, but Providential. It was a wonderful provision of Divine mercy, that this incredulous disciple, by thrusting his fingers into the bodily Wounds of his Master, should apply a remedy to the spiritual wounds of unbelief in our souls. The doubts of Thomas have done us more good than the faith of all the disciples that believed. While he feeleth his way to faith, our minds are freed from doubt, and settled in faith. Eighth Lesson - My Lord and My God Even as the Lord before His Birth willed that Mary should be espoused, and yet never lose her virginity, so, after His Resurrection, He willed that His disciple should doubt, and yet not lose his faith. For, even as the espoused husband was the keeper of the virginity of the Mother, so was the disciple who doubted and felt, the witness of the truth of the Resurrection. He felt, and cried out: "My Lord and my God. Jesus saith unto him: Thomas, because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed." When the Apostle Paul saith: "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" - he plainly meaneth that faith is the evidence of things that cannot be seen. When they are seen, there remaineth not faith, but knowledge. Ninth Lesson - Faith that Sees the Godhead Thomas, then, seeth, and believeth. Why is it said to him: "Because thou hast seen Me, thou hast believed?" The truth is, he saw one thing, and so believed another. To mortal man it is not given to see God. He therefore saw only the Manhood, and yet had faith in the Godhead: "My Lord and my God." This he said, seeing and believing, seeing Perfect Man, and yet believing in Perfect God, Whom he could not see. O what a comfort are the words which follow! "Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed." These words are specially meant for us, who have not seen even the Flesh, and who yet do believe. They are specially meant for us if we believe and do not, by our lives, give the lie to our belief. He only hath a saving faith, whose faith beareth fruit. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Cross Is Daily The Church places this truth before you today: The disciple of Christ must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Our Lord in obedience, penance, and perseverance. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Holiness is formed in ordinary fidelity before it is tested in public suffering. The grace to be practiced is Faith brought from wound to worship, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice humble cooperation: labor faithfully while knowing that every supernatural fruit belongs first to grace. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist a comfortable religion that admires Christ while refusing self-denial. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faith brought from wound to worship when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept being an instrument rather than the owner of the work, surrendering both credit and control of results. Use all the abilities and opportunities God has entrusted to you, then return the entire fruit to Him through Mary. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of holy; the witness placed beside it is St. Bede the Venerable. Your resolution before God: Make a reverent act of faith before the Blessed Sacrament or a crucifix and submit recurring doubts to Catholic teaching. Carry this word: Apostolic faith ends in adoration of the true Christ, not endless preference for private judgment. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "Thou hast here no place of long abiding, for wheresoever thou be, thou art but a stranger and a pilgrim." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book II, chapter 1, p. 53 The citizen of Heaven uses earthly goods faithfully without building his final home in them. Receive the day's joys and sorrows as provisions for the road. Exile becomes bitter when the soul demands permanence from what must pass. Let today's change, disappointment, or small loss remind you gently of your destination. Fulfill earthly duties well precisely because they are the road appointed by God, but keep the heart free for the City that does not pass away. Today's Practice: When something passes away today, say: My home is with God. DAILY EXAMEN Ask where you acted as though success depended wholly upon you, or where false passivity excused neglected duty. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Jesus, Light of the world, through St. Thomas the Apostle, dispel my unbelief and make me confess Thee faithfully as Lord and God. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
