CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Vigil of the Nativity of Our Lord 2030-12-24 - Advent - Vigil of the First Class - violet PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Vigil: a day or period of prayerful preparation before a feast; it teaches the faithful to prepare instead of arriving spiritually unready. Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Vigil brings the pilgrim to a holy stillness before the Nativity. Do not arrive at the crib carrying willfully retained sin, resentment, or the noise of needless distraction. Enter with St. Joseph's obedience and Our Lady's purity, asking that the house of your soul belong to the Child who comes to save it. Receive from Jesus through Mary only so that you may belong and return more completely to Jesus. Ask Jesus for mercy through His Mother and offer yourself as an instrument by which His charity may reach the persons entrusted to you. "She is His mysterious canal; she is His aqueduct, through which He makes His mercies flow gently and abundantly." St. Louis-Marie de Montfort, True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin, no. 24 Christ is the source; Mary is the canal. The distinction is essential. She neither originates grace nor replaces Our Lord's sacrifice, Church, or sacraments. Everything she gives is His, and her whole maternal action carries souls toward union with Him. An aqueduct receives in order to convey. Imitate that self-forgetful service. Whatever truth, time, strength, material good, consolation, or spiritual help God sends should not stagnate in self-possession. Let it pass through your duties into prayer, charity, reparation, and service of souls. The Vigil of Christmas fixes the soul on the coming of Jesus, whose name means Saviour because He shall save His people from their sins. It teaches that Christmas is not sentiment first, but salvation: the heart must prepare by repentance, silence, and faith. Let the vigil be quiet. The Lord is near, and the best welcome is a heart willing to be saved. FROM MATINS The just guardian who held silence before the mystery. Matins - One Nocturn - Vigil of the Nativity of Our Lord St. Jerome, Priest "He knew her to be pure, and yet understood not the mystery of her pregnancy." - The Breviary's Christmas Eve homily asks why the Lord was conceived of an espoused Virgin and answers through providential protection, lawful genealogy, and concealment from the devil. - St. Jerome carefully guards Mary's perpetual virginity: the words before they came together state what had not occurred and do not imply a later union. - St. Joseph's justice appears in reverent restraint. Unable yet to understand the mystery, he knows Mary's purity and refuses to expose her. Keep the vigil with St. Joseph's silence. When God's work exceeds understanding, purity, restraint, and readiness to obey prepare the soul for light. FULL BREVIARY LESSONS First Lesson - The Espoused Virgin and Divine Providence When as Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. And so on. Why was the Lord conceived of an espoused virgin rather than of a free? First, for the sake of the genealogy of Mary, which we have obtained by that of Joseph. Secondly, because she was thus saved from being stoned by the Jews as an adulteress. Thirdly, that Himself and His mother might have a guardian on their journey into Egypt. To these, Ignatius, the martyr of Antioch, has added a fourth reason: namely, that the birth might take place unknown to the devil, who would naturally suppose that Mary had conceived by Joseph. Second Lesson - Before They Came Together "Before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost." She was found, that is, by Joseph, but by no one else. He had already almost an husband's privilege to know all that concerned her. "Before they came together." This doth not imply that they ever did come together: the Scripture merely showeth the absolute fact that up to this time they had not done so. Third Lesson - St. Joseph's Justice and Reverent Restraint "Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily." If any man be joined to a fornicatress they become one body; and according to the law they that are privy to a crime are thereby guilty. How then can it be that Joseph is described as a just man, at the very time he was compounding the criminality of his espoused? It must have been that he knew her to be pure, and yet understood not the mystery of her pregnancy, but, while he wondered at that which had happened, was willing to hold his peace. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Holy Ghost Does Not Author Contradiction The Church places this truth before you today: The Holy Ghost guides the Church into truth; He does not lead her to contradict the faith once delivered. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Appeals to the Spirit must be judged by apostolic doctrine, not by enthusiasm, novelty, or institutional pressure. The grace to be practiced is Reverent readiness for salvation, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice generosity by receiving God's gifts gratefully and placing them at the service of His glory and your neighbor's salvation. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist invoking the Holy Ghost to justify rupture from received doctrine. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing reverent readiness for salvation when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Renounce possessiveness over gifts, time, spiritual consolations, and the fruit of good works. Use all your duties, prayers, resources, and opportunities as channels of truth and charity without seeking ownership of the good accomplished. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. Irenaeus. Your resolution before God: Keep a period of silence, make an act of contrition, and complete the works of reconciliation and preparation that duty permits before the feast. Carry this word: The best welcome for the Christ Child is a soul reconciled, recollected, and ready to obey. THE PILGRIM'S MIRROR "The most noble and the most perfect victory is for a man to have the victory of himself." Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ, Book III, chapter 53, p. 159 Victory over others can feed pride; victory over self-will makes room for Christ. Ask for the grace to conquer the fault that most often conquers you. Choose the fault by its frequency, not by how dramatic it appears. The repeated impatient tone, indulgent thought, delayed prayer, or unnecessary complaint may govern more of life than a rare great trial. Meet it today at its first small demand, while grace makes refusal possible. Today's Practice: Choose the harder faithful act once, quietly and at once. DAILY EXAMEN Ask whether grace ended in self-satisfaction or flowed onward into obedience, reparation, intercession, and works of mercy. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Divine Infant, through the Immaculate Heart of Thy Mother and the guardianship of St. Joseph, prepare me to receive Thee with faith and purity. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
