CITY OF GOD IN EXILE Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ 2030-12-25 - Christmastide - Double of the First Class - white PLAIN-LANGUAGE GUIDE FOR TODAY Incarnation: the mystery that the eternal Son of God truly took a human nature and became man without ceasing to be God. Commemoration: a shorter liturgical remembrance of another saint or observance occurring on the same day. Martyr: a Christian who was killed rather than deny Christ or abandon the Faith. The full Breviary lessons preserve an older English translation. Read the modern explanation first; it identifies the people, event, and doctrine before the historical wording appears. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR At Bethlehem the eternal Son of God truly assumes our nature without ceasing to be God. The poverty of the crib is not sentimental decoration; it is the abasement of divine charity, already pointing toward the Sacrifice by which sinners will be redeemed. Kneel with Our Lady and St. Joseph, adore Jesus Christ, and offer Him the self-love He came to conquer. Adore the Holy Ghost as the giver of every heavenly gift and approach Our Lady as His wholly dependent and faithful Spouse. Invoke the Holy Ghost, ask through Our Lady for all the graces needed today, and resolve to cooperate with them faithfully. "To Mary, His faithful Spouse, God the Holy Ghost has communicated His unspeakable gifts; and He has chosen her to be the dispensatrix of all He possesses, in such sort that she distributes to whom she wills, as much as she wills, as she wills, and when she wills, all His gifts and graces." Every grace comes from the merits of Jesus Christ and is applied by the Holy Ghost; Mary possesses no divinity and acts with no power independent of God. Her office as dispensatrix is the office He freely communicated to His faithful creature and Mother of the Redeemer. This truth should produce neither presumption nor passivity. Ask through Our Lady for every grace required to keep the commandments, receive the sacraments worthily, resist temptation, fulfill your state of life, make reparation, and persevere to death. It would be unlawful to be sad to-day, for to-day is Life's Birthday: the Birthday of that Life, Which, for us dying creatures, taketh away the sting of death, and bringeth the bright promise of the eternal gladness hereafter. It would be unlawful for any man to refuse to partake in our rejoicing. All men have an equal share in the great cause of our joy, for, since our Lord, Who is the destroyer of sin and of death, findeth that all are bound under the condemnation, He is come to make all free. He brought against him the very shape, the very nature of our mortality, "yet without sin." (Heb. iv. 15.) His birth however was not a birth like other births - for no other is born pure, nay, not the little child whose life endureth but a day on the earth. To His birth alone the throes of human passion had not contributed, in His alone no consequence of sin had had part. For His Mother was chosen a Virgin of the kingly lineage of David, and when she was to grow heavy with the sacred Child, her soul had already conceived Him before her body. She knew the counsel of God announced to her by the Angel, lest the unwonted events should alarm her. The future Mother of God knew what was to be wrought in her by the Holy Ghost, and that her modesty was absolutely safe. Sixth Lesson - Learn, O Christian, How Great Thou Art Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us give thanks to God the Father, through His Son, in the Holy Ghost: Who, "for His great love wherewith He loved us," hath had mercy on us: and, "even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ," (Eph. ii. 4, 5,) that in Him we might be a new creature, and a new workmanship. Let us then put off the old man with his deeds (Col. iii. 9); and, having obtained a share in the Sonship of Christ, let us renounce the deeds of the flesh. Learn, O Christian, how great thou art, who hast been made partaker of the Divine nature, (2 Pet. i. 4,) and fall not again by corrupt conversation into the beggarly elements above which thou art lifted. Remember Whose Body it is Whereof thou art made a member, and Who is its Head, (1 Cor. vi. 15.) Remember that it is He That hath delivered thee from the power of darkness and hath translated thee into God's light, and God's kingdom, (Col. i. 13.) THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Papacy Serves the Faith It Receives The Church places this truth before you today: The Roman Primacy exists to guard, confirm, and govern in the apostolic faith; it is not license to create another religion. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. True authority is recognized by its service to the deposit of faith, not by bare claims severed from Catholic doctrine. The grace to be practiced is Adoring humility before the Incarnate Word, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice grateful dependence by joining generous prayer to vigilant and complete cooperation with grace. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist confusing the office Christ instituted with commands or claimants that attack the faith the office must protect. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing adoring humility before the Incarnate Word when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. When sensible help is absent, continue trusting the divine Giver and using the means of grace He has established. Seek grace before prayer, duties, decisions, conversations, temptations, and sacrifices, then act with diligence rather than presumption. The Church's witness: this truth manifests the Church's mark of apostolic; the witness placed beside it is St. John Fisher. Your resolution before God: Assist reverently at Holy Mass, visit the crib, and perform hidden acts of charity in honor of the poverty of Bethlehem. Prefer His friendship, His truth, and His Cross to every advantage gained by compromise. Temptation often presents the price first and hides the loss. It tells you what obedience may cost in comfort, reputation, companionship, or opportunity, while concealing the poverty of possessing these things without peace with God. Look beyond the immediate bargain and choose with eternity in view. Today's Practice: Refuse every compromise made for comfort, gain, or human respect. DAILY EXAMEN Thank God for the graces given through Our Lady and repent of every grace resisted, neglected, or used carelessly. - For what grace or mercy should I thank God today? - What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess? - What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow? PRAYER O Divine Infant Jesus, true God and true man, I adore Thee; through Mary and Joseph, receive my heart, my household, and my whole life. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
