Virgin: in a saint's title, a woman honored for consecrating her chastity and whole life to Christ. TODAY IN THE ROMAN YEAR The Church places St. Stephen beside the newborn King so that Christmas cannot be reduced to tenderness without sacrifice. The Child came to bear witness to truth and to redeem by Blood; His servant follows by confessing Christ and forgiving his murderers. Ask for charity strong enough to name evil, endure its cost, and pray for the offender. Ask for the childlike faith that receives Catholic truth humbly while remaining ready to learn its foundations in Scripture and Tradition. Ask for a docile mind that loves Catholic truth, learns it faithfully, and never uses complexity to evade obedience. "But as I speak particularly to the poor and simple, who being of good-will, and having more faith than the common run of scholars, believe more simply and so more meritoriously, I content myself with putting out the truth quite simply, without stopping to quote the original passages, which they would not understand." In this very paragraph he explains that his teaching can be confirmed from Holy Scripture and the Fathers. Simplicity of faith is the opposite of self-sufficient cleverness, but it must never become indifference to doctrine. Receive what the Church teaches, seek sound reasons according to your capacity and duties, refuse novelty and private invention, and submit every conclusion to the revealed Faith handed down by the Church. Sixth Lesson - Love of God and Neighbor Conquers My brethren, it behoveth us to consider with what arms Stephen was able, amid all the cruelty of the Jews, to remain more than conqueror, and worthily to attain to so blessed a triumph. Stephen, in that struggle which brought him to the crown whereof his name is a prophecy, had for armour the love of God and man, and by it he remained victorious on all hands. The love of God strengthened him against the cruelty of the Jews; and the love of his neighbour made him pray even for his murderers. Through love he rebuked the wandering, that they might be corrected; through love he prayed for them that stoned him, that they might not be punished. By the might of his love he overcame Saul his cruel persecutor; and earned for a comrade in heaven, the very man who had done him to death upon earth. THE PILGRIM'S SPIRITUAL CONFERENCE The Church Is Visible and Founded by Christ The Church places this truth before you today: The true Church is not an invisible collection of private opinions, but the society founded by Our Lord, teaching, sanctifying, and governing in His name. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Apostolicity guards continuity of doctrine, worship, mission, and authority. The faithful do not invent the Church; they receive her from Christ through the Apostles. The grace to be practiced is Courage joined to forgiveness, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice teachability by receiving sound correction, studying what your duties require, and refusing both intellectual pride and careless credulity. There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the claim that a self-made religious fellowship can replace the Church Christ visibly founded. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing courage joined to forgiveness when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control. Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the labor of learning, the humility of admitting ignorance, and the duty of abandoning opinions contrary to the Faith. Read, speak, and judge according to sound Catholic sources, explaining truth plainly without weakening or disguising it. Your resolution before God: Pray by name for those who have wronged you and refuse inward rehearsals of their injuries. DAILY RULE FOR THE PILGRIM A brief rule to keep every day: Begin with morning prayer Adore the Blessed Trinity and offer the whole day to Jesus through Mary before other duties claim the mind. Keep the Angelus Pause morning, noon, and evening to remember the Incarnation. Seek Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament Attend Holy Mass when duty permits; otherwise make a Spiritual Communion and renew desire for Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Return to Jesus and Mary Use frequent holy aspirations during work, waiting, suffering, and temptation. Pray the Rosary Keep the mysteries of Christ before the mind with Our Lady and learn to imitate what they contain. End with night prayer and examen Give thanks, confess faults, forgive injuries, make a practical amendment, and entrust the night to Our Lady.
