The Most Holy Name of Jesus
Let the first month of the civil year be placed beneath the saving Name given to the Divine Child. The pilgrim begins again not in self-reliance, but in the Name before which every knee must bow.

For reverence toward the Holy Name, reparation for blasphemy and careless speech, and the conversion of those who do not yet confess Jesus Christ.

Sunday belongs first to the worship of God and the commemoration of the Resurrection. Adore the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, from Whom every grace descends and to Whom the whole Christian life must return.

The Church does not leave the faithful to pass through time as though days were neutral. This observance teaches the soul to receive the day under grace, to remember what God has done, and to let sacred time order study, prayer, and perseverance.

“These may be expressed in four words: to do all our actions by Mary, with Mary, in Mary and for Mary; so that we may do them all the more perfectly by Jesus, with Jesus, in Jesus and for Jesus.”
St. Louis de Montfort's fourfold practice is not a pious ornament laid over an unchanged life. It gives ordinary actions a new interior order. The soul renounces its own proud and hurried spirit, looks to Mary's dispositions, rests beneath her maternal care, and returns the act through her to Jesus Christ.
Offer the day's ordinary work in this manner. Before beginning, surrender self-will; while working, imitate Mary's recollection and fidelity; when the work is finished, place it in her hands without seeking praise. Thus common duties become part of a consecrated life.

Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Lord, purify my love for Catholic beauty. Let it lead me to obedience, reverence, valid worship, and sanctity rather than taste alone.

Pope St. Gregory the Great, Homily 19 on the Gospels
“The Lord hath never ceased to send into it labourers.”
- The Breviary begins the pre-Lenten descent with creation, the fall, original sin, and the call to labor in the vineyard.
- St. Gregory reads the vineyard as the Church, tended through the ages by patriarchs, prophets, teachers, apostles, and all who join right faith to righteousness.

The birthday of St. Timothy, disciple of the apostle - St. Paul, who ordained him bishop of Ephesus. After many combats for Christ, he was stoned for reprehending those who offered sacrifices to Diana, and shortly after went peacefully to his rest in the Lord. — At Antioch, in the persecution of Decius, the bishop St. Babylas, who frequently glorified God by his sufferings and torments, and ended his holy life in chains, with which he ordered his body to be buried. Three boys whom he had instructed in the faith of Christ, Urbanus, Philidian, Epolonius, are said to have suffered with him. — At Neocaesarea, the holy martyrs Mardonius, Musonius, Eugenius, and Metellus, who were burned to death, their remains being thrown into the river. — At Foligno, in the time of Decius, St. Felician, consecrated bishop of that city by pope Victor. Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: The true Church is not an invisible collection of private opinions, but the society founded by Our Lord, teaching, sanctifying, and governing in His name. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Apostolicity guards continuity of doctrine, worship, mission, and authority. The faithful do not invent the Church; they receive her from Christ through the Apostles.
The grace to be practiced is Humble labor under grace, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's hidden life. Let fidelity be complete even when the work is ordinary and no human eye rewards it.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the claim that a self-made religious fellowship can replace the Church Christ visibly founded. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing humble labor under grace when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive obscurity and lack of recognition as a school of self-forgetfulness, not as permission for discouragement. Complete every duty faithfully, giving the least-noticed duty the same care under Our Lady's gaze, and leave its value entirely to God.

How shall I imitate Christ today?
“The most noble and the most perfect victory is for a man to have the victory of himself.”
Victory over others can feed pride; victory over self-will makes room for Christ. Ask for the grace to conquer the fault that most often conquers you.
Choose the fault by its frequency, not by how dramatic it appears. The repeated impatient tone, indulgent thought, delayed prayer, or unnecessary complaint may govern more of life than a rare great trial. Meet it today at its first small demand, while grace makes refusal possible.

Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
