Good Morning, Pilgrim

Receive this day from God.

Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair.

Ask for a docile mind that loves Catholic truth, learns it faithfully, and never uses complexity to evade obedience.

Ora — Begin with Prayer

Offer the day before spending it

Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.

Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.

O Lord, do not let me be satisfied with appearances when Thy glory is absent. Teach me to seek worship that is true, reverent, sacrificial, and received.

Pope St. Gregory the Great, Homily on John 8

“Let each one ask himself if he, in the ear of his heart, heareth God's words.”

• The Breviary enters Passiontide with Christ asking who can convince Him of sin, and warning that those who are of God hear the words of God.
• St. Gregory teaches that hearing God's words is not mere bodily listening. It requires obedience in the heart, discipline of bodily desires, refusal to live for worldly praise, and charity toward one's neighbor.
• The insults cast at Christ reveal by their actions those who have rejected God's rule. The Lord's silence before one accusation shows His perfect self-command and His watchful care for His people.

Do not measure fidelity by religious sound alone. Ask whether the heart obeys what it hears, and let Passiontide uncover every refusal to be governed by the words of God.

After a detention of nine months they all fell by the sword of Nero, after most generously confessing the faith. Also, at Rome, St. Leo, bishop and martyr. — In Africa, the holy martyrs Peter and Aphrodisius, who obtained the crown of martyrdom in the persecution of the Vandals. — At Carrha3, in Mesopotamia, the patrician St. Eutychius and his companions, who were killed by Evelid, king of Arabia, for the confession of the faith. — In the province of Valeria, two saintly monks, who were hanged on a tree by the Lombards, and though dead, were heard singing psalms even by their enemies. — In the same persecution, a deacon of the church of Marsico was beheaded for the confession of the faith. — At Halberstadt, in Germany, the demise of the blessed queen Matilda, mother of the emperor Otho I., celebrated for her humility and patience.

When truth feels costly, stay near Our Lord in silence. He is not less divine because men reject Him, and His friends need not win every argument to remain faithful.

Before Abraham was made, I am.

Passion Sunday veils the sacred images and places the faithful before Christ's solemn testimony to His eternal divinity.

The conflict sharpens because unbelief cannot tolerate the true claim of Christ: He is not merely teacher or prophet, but the eternal Son who goes freely to His Passion.

Let the veils teach reverence. Passiontide is not vague sadness; it is the solemn hour of the eternal Son moving toward sacrifice.

• The Passion Sunday office begins the solemn deepening of Lent as the Church turns toward the suffering of Christ.

Enter Passiontide with adoration. The veiled images and graver tone call the soul to reverence before the eternal Son going to sacrifice.
