Good Morning, Pilgrim

Receive this day from God.

Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair.

Profess the Catholic Faith, honor the Mother of God, and resolve to reject every error and sin that separates souls from her Son.

Ora — Begin with Prayer

Offer the day before spending it

Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.

Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.

O Lord, show me the sins I excuse, the occasions I keep near, and the attachments I protect. Give me contrition without despair and amendment without delay.

Roman Breviary, Proper lessons for St. Cyril of Jerusalem

“He has embraced, clearly and fully, all the teaching of the Church.”

• The Breviary remembers St. Cyril as a student of Holy Scripture, monk, priest, preacher, instructor of catechumens, and champion of orthodox faith.
• His Catecheses defend the doctrine of the Church clearly and fully, including the real Presence of the Body and Blood of Christ in the wondrous Sacrament of the Eucharist.
• Like St. Athanasius, he suffered false accusations, removal from his episcopal office, and exile by the Arians, yet returned to Jerusalem and continued caring for his people as their bishop.

Teach the Faith whole. St. Cyril shows that catechesis must be precise, sacramental, Scriptural, anti-heretical, and patient under slander.

At Jerusalem, St. Cyril, bishop and doctor, who suffered many injuries from the Arians for the faith. Often exiled from his church, he at length rested in peace with a great reputation for sanctity. A magnificent testimony of the purity of his faith is given by a general Council, in a letter to pope Damasus. — At Caesarea, in Palestine, the birthday of the blessed bishop Alexander, who from his own city, in Cappadocia, where he was bishop, coming to Jerusalem to visit the holy places, took upon himself, by divine revelation, the government of that Church, in the place of the aged Narcissus, its bishop. Some time afterwards, when he had become venerable by his age and grey hairs, he was led to Caesarea and shut up in prison, where he ended his martyrdom for the confession of Christ during the persecution of Decius. — At Augsburg, St. Narcissus, bishop, who was the first to preach the Gospel in the Tyrol. Afterwards, setting out for Spain, he converted many to the faith of Christ at Gerona, where, with the deacon Felix, he received the palm of martyrdom during the persecution of Diocletian. — At Nicomedia, ten thousand holy martyrs, who were put to the sword for the confession of Christ. — Also, the holy martyrs Trophimus and Eucarpius. — In England, the holy king Edward, who was assassinated by order of his treacherous stepmother, and became celebrated for many miracles. — At Lucca, in Tuscany, the birthday of the holy bishop Frigdian, who was illustrious by the power of working miracles.
