In the Time after Pentecost, the Church sends the faithful back into daily labor under the light of the Holy Ghost. The soul must not seek fire as excitement only. It must seek the fire that purifies speech, strengthens duty, exposes false peace, and keeps the Church's received worship dear.
Tell Our Lady simply that you desire to serve her Divine Son under her direction, not merely to feel devotion.

“Of Mary there is never enough.”
This famous saying must not be understood as permission for exaggeration, invention, or devotion separated from doctrine. St. Louis de Montfort immediately speaks of praising, honoring, loving, and serving Mary as we ought. The little word serving protects the whole sentence from sentimentality.
There is never enough true devotion because there is never enough surrender to Jesus Christ. The soul can always receive His Mother more faithfully, imitate her more exactly, pray with greater recollection, and surrender another reserve of self-will. Ask not for more emotion today, but for more faithful service.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Lord, show me the sins I excuse, the occasions I keep near, and the attachments I protect. Give me contrition without despair and amendment without delay.

Pope St. Leo the Great, 8th Sermon on the Lord's Passion
“Thy Cross is a well of blessings for all.”
- The Breviary keeps the Exaltation of the Holy Cross by recalling the recovery and solemn restoration of the relic of the True Cross, then directing the faithful to the deeper triumph of Christ crucified.
- St. Leo teaches that faith sees more in the lifted Cross than the wicked saw: the judgment of the world, the casting out of the prince of this world, and the drawing of all things to Christ.
- The Cross reveals the end of the shadows and the fulfillment of sacrifice, for the one oblation of Christ's Body and Blood fulfills every former offering.

Seventh Lesson - The Glory Hidden from the Wicked
Dearly beloved brethren, when we gaze upon Christ lifted up upon the Cross, the eyes of our mind see more than that which appeared before the wicked, unto whom it was said through Moses: "And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee, and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life." (Deut. xxviii. 66.) They saw in the crucified Lord nothing but the work of their own wickedness, and "they feared greatly," (Matth. xxvii. 54,) not with that faith which giveth earnest of life by justification, but with that whereby the evil conscience is tortured. But our understanding is enlightened by the Spirit of truth, and with pure and open hearts we see the glory of the Cross shining over heaven and earth, and discern by inward glance what the Lord meant when His Passion was nigh at hand, and He said: "Now is the judgment of this world, now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things unto Me."
Eighth Lesson - The Power of the Cross
O how wonderful is the power of the Cross! O how unutterable is the glory of the Passion, wherein standeth the Lord's judgment-seat, and the judgment of this world, and the might of the Crucified! Lord! Thou hast drawn all things unto Thee! Thou didst spread out Thine Hands all the day unto an unbelieving and gainsaying people, (Isa. lxv. 2,) but the world hath felt and owned Thy Majesty! Lord! Thou hast drawn all things unto Thee! Lord! Thou hast drawn all things unto Thee! That which was veiled under types and shadows in the one Jewish Temple, is hailed by the love of all peoples in full and open worship. There is now a higher order of Levites, a more honourable rank of elders, a Priesthood with an holier anointing. Thy Cross is a well of blessings for all, and a cause of thanksgiving for all. Thereby for them that believe in Thee, weakness is turned into strength, shame into glory, and death into life. The changing ordinance of divers carnal sacrifices is gone; the one oblation of Thy Body and Blood fulfilleth them all. For Thou art the Very Paschal Lamb, Which takest away the sins of the world, and art in Thyself all offerings finished. And even as Thou art the One Sacrifice Which taketh the place of all sacrifices, so may Thy kingdom be one kingdom established over all peoples.

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross, when the em- - peror Heraclius, after defeating king Chosroes, brought it back to Jerusalem from Persia. — At Rome, in the Appian road, during the persecution of Decius, blessed Cornelius, pope and martyr, who, after being banished, was scourged with leaded whips, and then beheaded with twenty-one others of both sexes. — On the same day, were condemned to capital punishment Cserealis, a soldier, and his wife Sallustia, who had been instructed in the faith by the same Cornelius. — In Africa, in the time of the emperors Valerian and Gallienus, St. Cyprian, bishop of Carthage, most renowned for holiness and learning. It was near the seashore, six miles from the city, that he consummated his martyrdom by decapitation, after enduring a most painful exile. The festival of the Saints Cornelius and Cyprian is kept on the 16th of this month. — There suffered also in the same place the holy martyrs Crescentian, Victor, Kosula, and Generalis. — On the Salarian road, at Rome, during the persecution of Diocletian, Sf. “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all things to myself.”
Look at the Cross until fear grows smaller. Our Lord does not ask you to carry every future sorrow at once; He asks for today's cross, carried near Him.
Receive the Church's lesson
Christ conquers by the Cross, overthrowing the prince of this world through sacrifice.
The faithful must walk while they have the light, not postponing conversion until the heart is dull.
This Gospel corrects a danger that can quietly deform Catholic judgment: The dream of a Christianity without sacrifice, penance, or contradiction. Ask where that danger seeks your consent today, and answer it with the act Our Lord requires.

Look steadily at the Cross. The sign that humbles the world is the sign that steadies the pilgrim.

Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: Modernism corrodes the faith from within by subjecting revelation, dogma, worship, and authority to religious experience and historical change. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Catholic answer is not panic but firm adherence to objective revelation, defined dogma, apostolic tradition, and the anti-modernist judgments of the Church.
The grace to be practiced is Glorying in the Cross, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice constancy by keeping your Marian prayers with attention when novelty and feeling are absent.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the language of continuity when it is used to smuggle contradiction into Catholic words. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing glorying in the Cross when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Let dryness purify devotion from the demand to be consoled; remain faithful because God is worthy. Perform all your duties faithfully, correcting with special care the duty you habitually perform carelessly, as a servant of Jesus and Mary.

How shall I imitate Christ today?
“Take the cross, therefore, and follow Jesus, and thou shalt go into the life everlasting.”
The cross is not an interruption of the pilgrimage; united to Christ, it is the road. Stand beneath it with Our Lady instead of fleeing into resentment.
You are not asked to enjoy pain or pretend that evil is good. You are asked not to lose the good that grace can draw from what Providence permits. Carry the unavoidable burden without adding the heavier cross of rebellion, and offer its hidden weight for a soul in danger.

Receive today's unavoidable crosses and offer them through Mary for souls in need.
Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Measure devotion by obedience, purity, prayer, and charity rather than by the feelings the day provided.
