Good Morning, Pilgrim

Receive this day from God.

Humiliation, opposition, and penance do not mean that God has ceased to govern. Our Lord redeemed the world through His obedient suffering on the Cross. When Catholics accept unavoidable trials without sin, perform penance, and continue obeying the truth, those sufferings can humble pride and deepen fidelity rather than lead to despair.

Place the unseen hours of this day within the hidden life of Jesus and Mary.

Ora — Begin with Prayer

Offer the day before spending it

Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.

Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.

O Lord, bless every natural good, but do not let me confuse it with the life of grace. Draw my family, my work, and my affections beneath the Catholic Faith.

Pope St. Gregory the Great, Dialogues, book III

“Having once had knowledge of the true faith, he never could forsake it.”

• The Breviary remembers St. Hermenegild as a Visigothic prince converted from Arianism to the Catholic faith by St. Leander of Seville.
• When gifts, threats, loss of kingdom, chains, and prison could not turn him back, his father sent an Arian bishop to offer Easter Communion as the price of favor.
• St. Hermenegild refused the sacrilegious communion, rebuked the false bishop, and received martyrdom rather than purchase earthly peace by betraying the true faith.

Never buy peace with false worship. St. Hermenegild teaches that the sacraments cannot be separated from the Catholic faith without becoming a test of fidelity.

I T Seville, in Spain, St. Hermenegild, son of Leovi- "" gild, Arian king of the Visigoths, who was incarcerated for the confession of the Catholic faith. By order of his wicked father he was beheaded because he had refused to receive communion from an Arian bishop, on the Paschal solemnity, and thus exchanging an earthly for a heavenly kingdom, he entered the abode of the blessed, both as a king and as a martyr. — At Pergamus, in Asia, the birthday of the holy martyrs Carpus, bishop of Thyatira, Papylus, deacon, and his sister Agathonica, an excellent woman, Agathadorus, their servant, and many others, who after various torments, were, for their blessed confession, crowned with martyrdom in the persecution of Marcus Antoninus Verus and Lucius Aurelius Commodus. — In this same persecution, there suffered at Rome that remarkable man, Justin the Philosopher, who had addressed to the emperors his second Apology in defence of our religion, and upheld it by strong arguments. Being accused of professing Chirstianity by the intrigues of the Cynic Crescens, whose conduct and immorality he had reproved, he obtained the reward of a martyr, as a remuneration for his faithful confession. — The same day, the martyrdom of the Saints Maximus, Quinctillian, and Dadas, during the persecution of Diocletian. — At Ravenna, St. Ursus, bishop and confessor.

Stay near the Cenacle with a recollected heart. Our Lord's majesty is not lessened when He kneels to cleanse; it is revealed.

Maundy Thursday

The supper, the priesthood, and the commandment of charity.

Maundy Thursday places the Church in the cenacle, where Our Lord washes the feet of His disciples and prepares to give Himself in sacrifice.

The day gathers the mysteries of Eucharistic love, the priesthood, and the new commandment: charity is not sentiment, but humble service flowing from the altar and moving toward the Cross.

Enter the cenacle quietly. The love shown there is not soft religion; it is the love that kneels, feeds, commands, and goes out to be betrayed.

St. Hermenegild

Royal martyr who refused false communion.

St. Hermenegild, son of Leovigild, Arian king of the Visigoths, was imprisoned for the confession of the Catholic faith.

On the Paschal solemnity he refused communion from an Arian bishop and was beheaded by order of his father, exchanging an earthly kingdom for a heavenly one.

Ask St. Hermenegild for courage before the altar. If an act of worship would profess a lie, the Catholic must refuse it, even when refusal wounds earthly peace.
