This feria is a weekday without a feast of higher rank. It teaches that the grace of Pentecost must enter ordinary duties: the Holy Ghost forms fidelity not only in great public acts, but in prayer, work, truthful speech, and obedience when no solemn celebration carries the day.

Honor Jesus Christ as Mary's divine Son and ask her to make your will obedient to His in all things.

Offer the day before spending it

Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.

Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.

O Holy Ghost, make the grace of Pentecost fruitful in the duties before me. Keep my faith exact, my charity patient, and my obedience prompt when the day seems ordinary.

St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo, Sermon on the Ascension

“The ascension of the Lord is the seal of the Catholic Faith.”

• The Breviary prolongs the Ascension by contemplating Christ's true human nature lifted above the stars.
• St. Augustine teaches that heaven is opened to believers because Christ ascended in the same nature in which He conquered death.
• The lesson guards the Incarnation: whoever denies either the true Godhead or the true Manhood of Christ empties the mercy and victory of the Saviour.

Hold fast the whole Christ. The Lord who ascended is true God and true man; therefore His victory is not an idea above us, but the pledge of our own resurrection and ascent.

At KOME, St. Juventius, martyr. — At Caesarea, in Palestine, blessed Pamphilus, priest and martyr, a man of remarkable sanctity and learning, and great charity to the poor. In the persecution of Galerius Maximian, he was tortured for the faith of Christ, under the governor Urbanus, and thrown into prison; then, being again subjected to torments under Firmilian, he consummated his martyrdom with others.
