A privileged call to reparation
First Friday: Reparation to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus
The first Friday of the month is a privileged invitation to answer the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus with worthy Holy Communion, gratitude, perseverance, and reparation for coldness, sacrilege, and ingratitude toward Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. Our Lord entrusted this school of reparative love to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, and the Church has fostered it as a powerful means of drawing souls back to His Heart.
The Great Promise of the Sacred Heart
In the canonization record of St. Margaret Mary, Pope Benedict XV recounts Our Lord's promise that those who receive Holy Communion on the first Friday for nine consecutive months will be granted the benefit of final repentance: they will not die in His displeasure or without the sacraments, and His Heart will be their secure refuge in the last hour. This promise should awaken confidence, perseverance, and a more faithful sacramental life.

The intention
For worthy Holy Communions, reparation for offenses against the Blessed Sacrament, the conversion of sinners, and a heart made meek, humble, pure, and obedient after the Heart of Jesus.
Answer the invitation today
When keeping the Nine First Fridays, prepare for worthy Holy Communion in the state of grace and offer it in reparation to the Sacred Heart. Let the nine months establish a continuing First Friday habit rather than mark an endpoint: after completing them, continue this reparative devotion whenever possible, answering the injuries of sin with lifelong gratitude, penance, and love. Whether or not Communion is possible today, make a reverent visit or spiritual Communion and offer hidden sacrifices in reparation.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Receive the prayer, sacrifice, and duty of this day in reparation for sin. Draw cold and wandering souls back to Thy truth, Thy altar, and Thy love, and make my heart obedient to Thine.

Friday keeps Calvary before the Christian soul. Unite the day's labor and suffering to the Passion of Christ, remembering that His Sacred Heart was opened for sinners and that love proves itself by sacrifice and obedience.

“God the Father made an assemblage of all the waters, and He named it the sea (mare). He has made an assemblage of all His graces, and He has called it Mary (Maria).”
The image magnifies the abundance of God, not an independent abundance in a creature. Every grace belongs to Him and is purchased for us by Jesus Christ. Mary is called the treasury because God freely filled her and wills to employ her maternal intercession for Christ's members.
Come as one who is poor and needs grace for everything: faith, repentance, purity, prayer, patience, courage, and perseverance. Spiritual poverty is not minimalism. Because the need is great, the petition should be persevering and the cooperation generous.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O God, through Ss. Cyril and Methodius, give me patient zeal, obedient learning, and love strong enough to desire conversion for every nation.

“What Rome first gave.”
- The Breviary honors Cyril and Methodius as brothers from Thessalonica whose learning, monastic discipline, and missionary obedience carried the Gospel to the Slav peoples.
- Cyril preached beyond the Crimea, translated holy Scripture into the language of the people, and helped form the alphabet by which the Slavonic language was expressed.
- Their mission was tested at Rome, where they gave account of their labor, professed fidelity to blessed Peter and the Roman Pontiffs, and received episcopal consecration and confirmation of their apostolic work.
Love peoples by giving them Christ, not by leaving them in error. Ss. Cyril and Methodius teach missionary patience, Roman fidelity, lawful pastoral adaptation, and doctrine brought into the tongue of souls.

The holy bishops Cyril and Methodius, who are mentioned on the 9th of March. — At Rome, the holy martyrs Claudius, notary, Mcostratus, assistant prefect, Castorius, Victorinus, and Symphorian, who were brought to the faith of Christ by St. Sebastian, and baptized by the blessed priest Polycarp. Whilst they were engaged in searching for the bodies of the holy martyrs, the judge Fabian had them arrested, and for ten days he tried by threats and caresses to shake their constancy, but being utterly unable to succeed, he ordered them to be thrice tortured, and then percipitated into the sea. — At Durazzo, in Macedonia, the holy martyrs Peregrinus> Lucian, Pompeius, Hesychius, Papius, Saturninus, and Germanus, natives of Italy. In the persecution of Trajan, they took refuge in the town of Durazzo, where seeing the saintly bishop Astius hanging on a cross for the faith of Christ, they publicly declared themselves to be Christians, when, by order of the governor, they were arrested and cast into the sea. — At Perugia, blessed Benedict XI., a native of Treviso of the Order of Preachers, who in the brief space of his pontificate, greatly promoted the peace of the Church, the restoration of discipline and the spread of religion. — At Alexandria, the birthday of St. Pantaenus, an apostolic man, filled with wisdom. Ss. Cyril and Methodius were brothers from Thessalonica who became apostles to the Slavic peoples. Learned, patient, and missionary, they gave themselves to preaching Christ where language, custom, and political pressure made the work difficult.
Their labor shows that a people is loved by being taught the faith clearly and brought into the Church's worship and discipline. Missionary adaptation must serve conversion to Christ, not surrender to local error or indifferentism.
Ask Ss. Cyril and Methodius for patient missionary courage. A people is not loved by leaving it without Christ.

The Church Suffers Without Ceasing to Be the Church
Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: The Church can be eclipsed, persecuted, betrayed, and reduced in visible splendor, yet Christ does not fail in His promises. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Exile must not make the faithful invent another Church, nor despair of the one Christ founded.
The grace to be practiced is Missionary patience, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice supernatural poverty by relying upon grace while using every lawful means God places within reach.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist both triumphalist denial of crisis and despairing denial of Christ's indefectible Church. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing missionary patience when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Let awareness of weakness drive you toward prayer and vigilance, never toward discouragement or lowered standards. Ask grace before all demanding duties and temptations, cooperate throughout them, and give thanks when they are completed.

Truth does not become true through fashion, applause, or a celebrated name. Test what you hear by revelation and the perennial teaching of the Church.
Yet à Kempis also rebukes the curiosity that collects authorities without receiving their doctrine. Listen for the truth God is giving through a trustworthy witness, and then permit that truth to correct you. The name of a saint should not become decoration around an unchanged life.
Today's Practice
Reject claims based on novelty or popularity and ask what the Church has always taught.
Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Name the graces received today and return them through Mary to the Father from whom every good gift descends.
