St. Pantaleon was a physician who confessed Christ and endured martyrdom. His feast teaches that bodily health is a real good but not the highest good; Catholic care serves the sick while remembering repentance, grace, the sacraments, and the soul's eternal destiny.
Ask for a mind both exact and humble, free from credulity, rash suspicion, intellectual vanity, and contempt for simple devotion.

Discern the spirit and the evidence. Do not accuse reverence before an image of idolatry, sneer at Rosaries, processions, pilgrimages, Scapulars, or humble customs, or use correction of abuses as a pretext to alienate souls from Mary. Verify particular claims honestly while encouraging sound practices and honoring those who perform them simply.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Lord, through St. Pantaleon, bless the sick and those who care for them, and keep bodily healing ordered to eternal salvation.

“He bore all the bitterness of his torments with a quiet and brave heart.”
- The Breviary remembers St. Pantaleon as a noble physician of Nicomedia, taught the faith of Jesus Christ by the priest Hermolaus and brought through baptism into confession.
- He persuaded his father Eustorgius to become Christian and preached the Faith of Christ at Nicomedia, exhorting others to embrace His doctrine.
- Under Diocletian he endured the rack and red-hot metal before receiving the sword and the crown of martyrdom.

At Nicomedia, the martyrdom of St. Pantaleon, a physician. For the faith of Christ he was apprehended by the emperor Maximian, subjected to the torture and burned with torches, during which torments he was comforted by an apparition of our Lord. He ended his martyrdom by a stroke of the sword. — In the same city, St. Hermolaus, priest, by whose instructions blessed Pantaleon was converted to the faith. Also, the Saints Hermippus and Hermocrates, brothers. After many sufferings borne for the confession of Christ, they were condemned to capital punishment by the same Maximian. — At Nola, the holy martyrs Felix, Julia and Jucunda. — At Biseglia, in Apulia, the holy martyrs Maurus, bishop, Pantaleemon, and Sergius, who suffered under Trajan. — In the country of the Homerites (Arabia), the commemoration of the holy martyrs, who were delivered to the flames for faith of Christ, under the tyrant Dunaan. — At Cordova, in Spain, during the persecution of the Arabs, the holy martyrs George, deacon, Felix, Aurelius, Natalia, and Liliosa. — At Ephesus, the birthday of the seven holy sleepers, Maximian, Malchus, Martinian, Denis, John, Serapion, and Constantine. — At Auxerre, the demise of blessed JEtherius, bishop and confessor. — At Constantinople, blessed Anthusa, a virgin. Remain here for a little while. Receive today's Catholic truth as a child of Holy Mother Church; let it judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: Modernism corrodes the faith from within by subjecting revelation, dogma, worship, and authority to religious experience and historical change. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. The Catholic answer is not panic but firm adherence to objective revelation, defined dogma, apostolic tradition, and the anti-modernist judgments of the Church.
The grace to be practiced is Healing mercy ordered to salvation, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice charitable discernment by verifying claims according to sound sources while honoring approved devotions and the faithful who practice them.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist the language of continuity when it is used to smuggle contradiction into Catholic words. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing healing mercy ordered to salvation when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Surrender the pleasure of appearing superior through criticism and accept the patient labor required for honest source verification. Support sound Marian devotion, correct genuine error without scorn, and refuse to circulate either unverified praise or rash accusation.

Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Examine whether pride disguised itself as discernment or sentiment displaced truth, and ask Our Lady for both humility and accuracy.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
