The Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Our Lady did not flee the Cross. By remembering her sorrows, the pilgrim learns compassion for the Passion of Christ, patience in affliction, and fidelity when consolation is withdrawn.

The Blessed Virgin Mary
Saturday is kept in filial remembrance of Our Lady, who remained faithful when Our Lord lay hidden in the tomb. Walk with Mary toward Jesus by imitating her faith, purity, recollection, and perseverance.

For growth in true devotion to Mary, the conversion of sinners, the protection of purity, and perseverance in the Catholic Faith.
A faithful act
Set the goal of praying the complete traditional Rosary today: all fifteen decades of the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries. Offer it for a definite intention, especially for the conversion and salvation of sinners. If the duties of your state require it, pray its three parts at different hours, but persevere toward completing the whole Rosary. Souls are in need: at Fatima, Our Lady warned that many souls go to hell because there is no one to make sacrifices and pray for them.

Blessed Mother, keep me under thy mantle, receive this day into thy hands, and lead me in all things to Jesus.
Good Morning, Pilgrim
Receive this day from God.
The green season is not empty time. It is growth under grace. The pilgrim must ask whether the seed of doctrine is becoming virtue, whether prayer is becoming habit, whether zeal is becoming charity, and whether Catholic truth is governing ordinary choices.
Cede the value and fruit of every good work to Jesus through Mary, asking freedom from spiritual ownership and hidden self-interest.

“There is no other practice equal to this for enabling us to get rid with facility of a certain proprietorship, which imperceptibly insinuates itself into our best actions. Our good Jesus gives us this great grace in recompense for the heroic and disinterested action of making a cession to Him, by the hands of His holy Mother, of all the value of our good works.”
Spiritual proprietorship is subtler than attachment to material goods. The soul may treat prayers, penances, merits, consolations, achievements, apostolic fruit, reputation for virtue, and even suffering as private capital. Total consecration cedes their value to Jesus through Mary and strikes at this hidden self-love.
Cession does not abolish responsible stewardship, prudence, justice, duties, or the examination of fruit. It removes possessive dominion and self-seeking. Work diligently, pray fervently, repair defects, and seek holiness; then release control over recognition, visible results, beneficiaries, consolation, and recompense.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Lord, do not let me be satisfied with appearances when Thy glory is absent. Teach me to seek worship that is true, reverent, sacrificial, and received.

Roman Breviary, Proper lesson for St. Gorgonius
“His faith is ours also; the same resolve.”
- The Breviary presents St. Gorgonius as a chamberlain of Emperor Diocletian who, with St. Dorotheus, brought the other servants of the imperial household to the Faith of Christ.
- When they saw a martyr cruelly tortured, love of martyrdom overcame attachment to courtly honor and safety; they publicly confessed that his condemned Faith was also theirs.
- Their witness teaches that earthly position must be surrendered rather than used to hide Catholic belief when Christ and the salvation of souls require open confession.
Do not let favor, employment, reputation, or proximity to power make you conceal the Faith. Ask St. Gorgonius for courage to strengthen others in Christ and to confess Him when silence would become betrayal.

Third Lesson - His Faith Is Ours Also
Gorgonius, born at Nicomedia, was chamberlain of the Emperor Diocletian. With the help of his colleague Dorotheus, he brought all the other servants of the imperial household to the Faith of Christ. When both of them one day saw a martyr being most cruelly tortured before Diocletian, they were inflamed by his example with love of martyrdom. Therefore these words burst forth from them both: "What is it, Emperor, that, since this belief of his which thou hast condemned is shared by us with him, thou punishest him alone? His faith is ours also; the same resolve." The emperor therefore ordered them to be bound and beaten with scourges until the skin was torn over their whole bodies, and vinegar mixed with salt to be poured into their wounds; then he commanded them, bound again, to be placed upon a gridiron over the force of glowing coals. Finally, after being tortured in various ways, they were put to death by hanging. The body of St. Gorgonius, having at one time been brought to Rome and buried between the Two Laurels on the Latin Way, was afterwards translated by Pope Gregory IV to the Basilica of the Prince of the Apostles.

September 9
At Nicomedia, the holy martyrs Dorotheus and Gorgonius. The greatest honors had been conferred on them by the emperor Diocletian, but as they detested the cruelty which he exercised against the Christians, they were by his order suspended in his presence, and lacerated with whips; then their skin being torn from their bodies, and vinegar with salt poured over them, they were burned on a gridiron and finally strangled. After some time, the body of blessed Gorgonius was brought to Rome, and deposited on the Latin road. Thence it was transferred to the basilica of St. Peter. — Among the Sabines, thirty miles from Rome, the holy martyrs Hyacinthus, Alexander, and Tiburtius. — At Sebaste, St. Severian, a soldier of the emperor Licinius. For frequently visiting the Forty Martyrs whilst they were in prison, he was suspended in the air with a stone tied to his feet by order of the governor Lysias, and being scourged and torn with whips, yielded up his soul in the midst of torments. — The same day, St. Straton, who ended his martyrdom for Christ by being tied to two trees and torn to pieces. — Also, the holy martyrs Rufinus and Rufinian, brothers. — At Rome, &t. Sergius, pope and confessor. — In the territory of TSrouanne, St. Omer, bishop. — In Ireland, St. Kieran, abbot. — At Cartagena, in South America, St. Peter Claver, confessor of the Society of Jesus, who labored with, wonderful self-abnegation and great charity among the negro slaves for more than forty years and baptized personally almost thirty thousand of them. He was canonized by order of pope Leo XIII.

St. Gorgonius
Martyr honored by men, faithful under torment.
The Martyrology records that Dorotheus and Gorgonius had received great honors from Diocletian, yet detested his cruelty against Christians and suffered savage torments by his order.
St. Gorgonius teaches that rank and favor become worthless when the powerful require betrayal of Christ. Honor from men must never purchase silence before cruelty or apostasy.
Ask St. Gorgonius for freedom from human respect. The honors of this world can become chains unless the soul is ready to lose them for Christ.

True Devotion to Mary Forms the Soul in Christ
Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: True Marian devotion is not sentiment detached from obedience. It brings the soul more deeply under Christ's rule. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Our Lady does not compete with her Son. She forms servants who hear Him, believe Him, and remain beneath His Cross.
The grace to be practiced is Fidelity above worldly favor, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice disinterested stewardship by laboring faithfully while surrendering recognition, control, consolation, reward, and visible success.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist false Marian devotion that seeks comfort, novelty, or emotion without conversion. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing fidelity above worldly favor when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept obscurity, misunderstood effort, unseen fruit, delayed results, and benefits assigned beyond personal knowledge or preference. Perform every prayer, penance, duty, and charitable work completely, then release its value and outcome through Mary's hands.

How shall I imitate Christ today?
“Then shall a good clean conscience make us more gladsome and merry than the cunning of all philosophy.”
At judgment, appearances will fall away and the soul will stand in truth before God. Learning, reputation, and skill have their proper uses, but none can replace a conscience purified by repentance and kept faithful through obedience.
Do not seek peace by avoiding examination. Ask the Holy Ghost to show you every matter that remains unsettled: sins requiring confession, injuries requiring forgiveness, restitution that can be made, or duties repeatedly postponed. A clean conscience is not sinlessness claimed by pride; it is the peace of a soul that refuses concealment and returns to grace.
Today's Practice
Settle every matter of conscience that can rightly be settled today, and prepare definitely to bring the rest to Confession.
Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Examine attachment to spiritual goods and reputation, make contrition for self-appropriation, and renew the complete cession.
