The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
As Advent prepares the Church for the Nativity, the Immaculate Conception displays God's victorious preparation of the Mother of the Redeemer. Ask for hatred of sin, purity of heart, and readiness to receive Christ.

The Most Holy Trinity
Sunday belongs first to the worship of God and the commemoration of the Resurrection. Adore the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, from Whom every grace descends and to Whom the whole Christian life must return.

Protect the day from unnecessary servile work and give God an unhurried period of worship, doctrine, or spiritual reading.

Good Morning, Pilgrim
Receive this day from God.
The Vigil brings the pilgrim to a holy stillness before the Nativity. Do not arrive at the crib carrying willfully retained sin, resentment, or the noise of needless distraction. Enter with St. Joseph's obedience and Our Lady's purity, asking that the house of your soul belong to the Child who comes to save it.
Ask Our Lady for a hidden beginning. Offer the whole day to God through her, including the parts that no one else will see or praise.

“Mary was singularly hidden during her life.”
St. Louis de Montfort begins by placing Our Lady where the world does not know how to look. Her life is not built around display. The greatest creature God made is content to be known by Him, to receive His will without constructing an audience, and to let the mystery of Christ occupy the place that self-love continually seeks for itself.
A new formation in true devotion must therefore begin with hiddenness. Do not ask first how devotion will make you feel or how it will appear. Ask which faithful act can be performed today for God alone. Our Lady will teach you that a soul loses nothing by disappearing from human notice when Jesus Christ is being formed within it.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Divine Infant, through the Immaculate Heart of Thy Mother and the guardianship of St. Joseph, prepare me to receive Thee with faith and purity.

St. Jerome, Priest, Commentary on St. Matthew
“He knew her to be pure, and yet understood not the mystery of her pregnancy.”
- The Breviary's Christmas Eve homily asks why the Lord was conceived of an espoused Virgin and answers through providential protection, lawful genealogy, and concealment from the devil.
- St. Jerome carefully guards Mary's perpetual virginity: the words before they came together state what had not occurred and do not imply a later union.
- St. Joseph's justice appears in reverent restraint. Unable yet to understand the mystery, he knows Mary's purity and refuses to expose her.
Keep the vigil with St. Joseph's silence. When God's work exceeds understanding, purity, restraint, and readiness to obey prepare the soul for light.
Complete Breviary Text
First Lesson - The Espoused Virgin and Divine Providence
When as Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. And so on.
Why was the Lord conceived of an espoused virgin rather than of a free? First, for the sake of the genealogy of Mary, which we have obtained by that of Joseph. Secondly, because she was thus saved from being stoned by the Jews as an adulteress. Thirdly, that Himself and His mother might have a guardian on their journey into Egypt. To these, Ignatius, the martyr of Antioch, has added a fourth reason: namely, that the birth might take place unknown to the devil, who would naturally suppose that Mary had conceived by Joseph.
Second Lesson - Before They Came Together
"Before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost." She was found, that is, by Joseph, but by no one else. He had already almost an husband's privilege to know all that concerned her. "Before they came together." This doth not imply that they ever did come together: the Scripture merely showeth the absolute fact that up to this time they had not done so.
Third Lesson - St. Joseph's Justice and Reverent Restraint
"Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily." If any man be joined to a fornicatress they become one body; and according to the law they that are privy to a crime are thereby guilty. How then can it be that Joseph is described as a just man, at the very time he was compounding the criminality of his espoused? It must have been that he knew her to be pure, and yet understood not the mystery of her pregnancy, but, while he wondered at that which had happened, was willing to hold his peace.

The vigil of the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. — At Antioch, during the persecution of Decius, the birthday of forty holy virgins, who suffered martyrdom by various kinds of torments.- — At Spoleto, the holy priest Gregory. In the time of the emperors Diocletian and Maximian, he was first beaten with rough clubs, and then after being exposed on the gridiron and imprisoned, was struck on the knees with iron carding instruments, burned on the sides with firebrands, and finally beheaded. — At Tripoli, the holy martyrs Lucian, Metrobius, Paulus, Zenobius, Theotimus, and Drusus. — At Nicomedia, during the persecution of Diocletian, St. Euthymius, martyr, who sent many before him to martyrdom, and being pierced with a sword, followed them to share their crown. — At Bordeaux, St. Delphinus, a bishop, who was renowned for holiness, in the time of Theodosius. — In Poland, St. John Cantius, secular priest and confessor, celebrated for his learning, his zeal in propagating the faith, and for his virtues and miracles. Let the vigil be quiet. The Saviour is near, and the best preparation is a heart that wants to be saved.

It teaches that Christmas is not sentiment first, but salvation: the heart must prepare by repentance, silence, and faith.
Let the vigil be quiet. The Lord is near, and the best welcome is a heart willing to be saved.

Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: The Roman Primacy exists to guard, confirm, and govern in the apostolic faith; it is not license to create another religion. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. True authority is recognized by its service to the deposit of faith, not by bare claims severed from Catholic doctrine.
The grace to be practiced is Reverent readiness for salvation, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Imitate Mary's humility by allowing God, rather than human notice, to be the sufficient witness of a good act.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist confusing the office Christ instituted with commands or claimants that attack the faith the office must protect. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing reverent readiness for salvation when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Receive obscurity without treating it as rejection. Hidden fidelity is precious before God. Perform the least noticed duty with the same care you would give it under the eyes of the whole household.

Your resolution before God
Keep a period of silence, make an act of contrition, and complete the works of reconciliation and preparation that duty permits before the feast.
The best welcome for the Christ Child is a soul reconciled, recollected, and ready to obey.
Carry this word quietly. Return to it when distraction, temptation, or discouragement begins to scatter the soul.

Formation in The Imitation of Christ - Day 22: Book II - The Interior Life
“Regard not much who is with thee, nor who is against thee, but be this thy greatest study, that God may be with thee.”
Human approval is a poor compass. With Mary, seek first to be faithful to Jesus Christ and His Church, whether praise follows or not.
The desire to be supported can subtly alter judgment before you notice it. It softens a necessary word, delays a duty, or makes loneliness appear to be proof that fidelity was mistaken. Examine the act by Catholic truth and your real obligations; then leave the company or opposition of men in God's hands.
Today's Practice
Perform right acts without checking whether anyone noticed.
Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Ask whether you sought to be seen, thanked, or vindicated. Place that hunger quietly into Mary's hands.
