Keep the mysteries of the Rosary near the mind today. Ask Our Lady to teach what they demand of faith, worship, and conduct.

Offer the day before spending it

Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.

Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.

O Lord, do not let me seek more knowledge while neglecting known duty. Make me prompt, recollected, humble, and faithful to grace.

Pope St. Gregory the Great, Homily 19 on the Gospels

“The Lord hath never ceased to send into it labourers.”

• The Breviary begins the pre-Lenten descent with creation, the fall, original sin, and the call to labor in the vineyard.
• St. Gregory reads the vineyard as the Church, tended through the ages by patriarchs, prophets, teachers, apostles, and all who join right faith to righteousness.
• The eleventh-hour call rebukes spiritual idleness and teaches that grace summons even latecomers into fruitful labor.

Do not stand idle at the edge of Lent. Enter the vineyard with faith, penance, and concrete works before the season has to drag you there.
