St. Raphael accompanied Tobias through danger, corrected disorder, brought healing, and returned thanksgiving to God. Divine guidance does not spare the pilgrim every trial; it leads him through trial according to Providence. Entrust today's road to God and accept the help He gives through angels, parents, priests, and lawful counsel.
Honor Jesus Christ as Mary's divine Son and ask her to make your will obedient to His in all things.

“Inasmuch as grace perfects nature, and glory perfects grace, it is certain that our Lord is still, in heaven, as much the Son of Mary as He was on earth; and that, consequently, He has preserved the most perfect obedience and submission of all children towards the best of all mothers.”
The Incarnation was not temporary. Jesus Christ reigns in heaven with the same sacred humanity He received from Our Lady. Yet St. Louis de Montfort immediately guards the truth: Mary is infinitely below her divine Son, and her will is perfectly conformed to the eternal and immutable will of God.
Our Lady's intercession can therefore never oppose, correct, or replace Christ's sovereign will. Go to her with confidence because she belongs wholly to Him. Ask her to purify your petitions, obtain what serves salvation, and teach you the filial obedience by which Jesus was subject to her at Nazareth.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Lord, govern my speech when error must be named. Let me correct with charity, courage, and sobriety, never with bitterness or theatrical anger.

St. Augustine, Bishop, Sermon on the Book of Tobias
“The prayer of the just is the key of heaven.”
- St. Augustine reads Raphael's mission as the answer to prayer joined with fasting, almsgiving, burial of the dead, and patient endurance of trial.
- Raphael refuses praise as though healing came from his own power: he is the minister of the heavenly Father, who gives freely and commands His servant to give freely.
- The angelic journey heals blindness, protects marriage, defeats the evil spirit, and teaches the household to bless God and publish His marvellous works.
Ask for guidance with a clean conscience and works of mercy. Hidden help should end in thanksgiving to God, not fascination with the messenger or confidence in your own control.

Fourth Lesson - Prayer Rises and Mercy Descends
The Lesson is taken from the Sermons of St. Augustine, Bishop [of Hippo.] Blessed Tobit, who knew how to break his bread to the hungry, maketh ready a swift recompense for him, who toiled for him for hire. We have listened patiently to the reading, which is just over, and we have marvelled at the discourse of the father and son, and now they are admonished by the Angel, whom they had deemed a dweller of earth; but whose service was the service of the Divine Glory. For it was to this end that he was suffered to fall into the affliction of blindness, even that he might have an Angel to his physician, who was kindled with the very light of God, and uttered the words, "Prayer is good with fasting and almsgiving." The prayer of the just is the key of heaven; the supplication goeth up, and the mercy of God cometh down. Though the earth be deep, and the heavens high, yet God heareth the voice of him who hath a good conscience. If it be a groan only, it is articulate enough for Him; a tear is sufficient for His eyes; He heareth weeping sooner than words. The prayer of the presumptuous He is wont to reject. The father and the son were of one mind; albeit twain, they had but one thought. "My son," saith he, "let us send away that man with an addition to his wages such as he pleaseth, for he hath done us great good by his work." And they began to ask him if he would take payment of his wages. "Brother," saith he, "take that is thine, and go thy way safely; take thy wages, for thou hast shown much kindness unto me, and unto my son. Take, as I said, half of the substance that thou and my son have brought unto me, for the thanks that we owe thee cannot be measured."
Fifth Lesson - Mercy Freely Given by the Heavenly Father
The Angel, who had been sent to work mercy for nothing, rejoiceth at the thought of wages. "Tobit, or Tobias," saith he, "why take needless thought to pay me? Keep what your heavenly Father hath given you. He is the fountain of health, and I am His minister to heal. Ye know not who is the hireling whose services ye have earned. Ye feared not to bury the dead of the captivity. O Tobit, thy works are gone up before the Lord, inasmuch as thou didst leave thy dinner to give burial to the dead. It was I who offered up before the Lord as a fat sacrifice thy care for their honourable burial; and it is I that have been sent forth to do the commands of the Heavenly Judge. Thou didst bury the dead, without fear for the sting of death; the very voiceless dead, whom thou didst bury, cried aloud for thee. The blindness of thine eyes was a trial, whereby thy patience should earn a brighter crown from the heavenly places. I am Raphael, one of the seven Angels, who stand in the presence of the glory of God; I have no need of wages from man; I am rich enough, in that I am near to the Majesty on high. He That hath sent me is rich. What He hath granted freely, He hath commanded me to grant freely. Neither do ye owe me any thanks, for ye have received nothing from me of my own strength. Bless God, and give praise to Him, and glorify Him, for He hath shown good upon you."
Sixth Lesson - Angelic Help Ordered to God
When the glory of the heavenly mystery was made known by the voice of the Archangel Raphael, Tobit and Tobias were thunderstruck, and fell upon the ground, their weak voices utterly silenced at the hearing of that strange voice. Why are ye afraid, O father Tobit, and son Tobias? is it because ye have taken one of the dwellers of heaven into your pay, and hired him as though he were one of the labourers of earth? The Angel hid his name from you; he said not, I am the Angel Raphael, but, I am Azarias, the son of Ananias the Great. In the first name that he gave thee he hid his high estate, lest he should scare him that hired him. For if he had said, I am an Angel, he would not have become the paid servant of Tobias. He kept back his noble name that the greatness of his nobility might shine out at the last. Behold, dearly beloved brethren, how great is the merit of almsgiving. Almsgiving hath earned an Angel for a servant, until he accomplished, as a hireling, his day. Ye behold of how great profit it is to bury the dead, even an oblation which the Angel Raphael maketh to ascend up before the heavenly Majesty. Ye behold how that alms deliver from death, and purge away sins, and open the eyes, and force from thee the darkness of sin. Tobias is led on his journey, and Sara, sorrowfully bereaved of so many husbands, is joined in wedlock by an Angel.

In the time of Diocletian, after having been a long time loaded with fetters, and imprisoned in Africa and Sicily by the governor Magdellian, as Felix refused absolutely to deliver the sacred books, according to the emperor's edict, they finally closed their lives by being beheaded. — At Nagran, in Arabia Felix, the passion of the Saint Aretas and his companions, to the number of three hundred and forty, in the time of the emperor Justin, under the Jewish tyrant Dunaan. Hold the Traditions
Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: Apostolic tradition is not nostalgia. It is the handing down of what the Church received from Christ and the Apostles. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Tradition protects the faithful from the tyranny of the present moment and from teachers who mistake novelty for life.
The grace to be practiced is Trust in providential guidance, drawn from today's saintly witness. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Practice filial obedience by receiving every lawful command promptly, reverently, and without self-willed reservation.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist innovation that claims continuity while contradicting what was handed down. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing trust in providential guidance when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Accept the humiliation of dependence and correction after the example of the Incarnate Word, who freely chose a hidden and obedient life. Bring every intention to Our Lady while surrendering its outcome completely to the sovereign will of her Son.

How shall I imitate Christ today?
“If we would every year overcome one vice, we should anon come to perfection.”
À Kempis does not flatter the soul with the promise of instant perfection. He asks for patient warfare against a definite vice. Much spiritual discouragement comes from trying vaguely to become holy while refusing to name the repeated fault through which self-will governs ordinary life.
Choose the vice by its actual frequency, not by how dramatic its name appears. It may be complaint, delay, curiosity, harsh judgment, vanity, impurity of thought, or refusal of prayer. Place it before God without excuse, ask Our Lady for the contrary virtue, and begin with its next small occasion.
Today's Practice
Name your recurring vice and write down the contrary acts you will make whenever it appears.
Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Examine where self-will resisted God, rightful authority, or duty, and ask Our Lady to lead you back to Jesus in humble obedience.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
Go Now, Pilgrim
Walk faithfully. Pray attentively. Bear your cross willingly. Love God above all things.
When this day is finished, may you have laid one more stone in the City of God.
You do not walk alone: remain beside the Blessed Virgin as she leads you toward her Divine Son and the Heavenly Jerusalem.
