As the liturgical year closes, this feria asks for no spectacular work—only an honest return of the year to God. Remember the graces received, the sins pardoned, the duties neglected, and the crosses that carried hidden mercy. Let gratitude become repentance and a firmer beginning rather than comfortable recollection.
Place every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation into the hands of Our Lady, asking her to present the whole day to her Divine Son.

“It was through the most holy Virgin Mary that Jesus came into the world, and it is also through her that He has to reign in the world.”
God did not choose Our Lady because He needed assistance from a creature. He chose her freely, and by that choice He teaches us something about His own order: the Word came to us in humility, hidden beneath a Mother's heart, and He wills that pride should not prescribe the road by which grace reaches a soul.
You may desire the reign of Christ while still guarding some chamber of life for self-will. Bring that guarded place into the light today. Ask Mary to receive it, not as its final end, but as the Mother appointed to form in you a more obedient welcome for her Divine Son.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Lord, receive my gratitude for every grace of this year, my contrition for every resistance, and my desire to serve Thee more faithfully.

At Antioch, the holy martyrs Basileus, bishop, Auxilius, and Saturninus. — In Persia, St. James Intercisus, a distinguished martyr. In the time of Theodosius the Younger, he denied Christ to please king Isdegerdes, but his mother and his wife having for that reason withdrawn from his company, he entered into himself, and returned to the king to declare his faith in our Lord, whereupon the irritated monarch condemned him to be cut to pieces and beheaded. Countless other martyrs suffered at this time in the same country. — At Sebaste, in Armenia, the holy martyrs Hirenarchus, Acacius, priest, and seven women. Struck with the constancy of these women, Hirenarchus was converted to Christ, and with Acacius died under the axe, in the reign of the emperor Diocletian and under the governor Maximus. — In Galicia, on the river C«a, the Saints Facundus and Primitivus, who suffered under the governor Atticus. — At Aquileia, St. Valerian, bishop. — At Riez, in France, St. Maximus, bishop and confessor, who, from his tender years, was endowed with every grace and virtue. The Cross Is Daily
Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: The disciple of Christ must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Our Lord in obedience, penance, and perseverance. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. Holiness is formed in ordinary fidelity before it is tested in public suffering.
The grace to be practiced is Faithful obedience to the grace of the present day, drawn from the daily rule of fidelity. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Ask Our Lady to form this virtue in you by teaching you her humility: she received every gift from God and returned all glory to Him.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist a comfortable religion that admires Christ while refusing self-denial. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing faithful obedience to the grace of the present day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Do not carry the cross alone or waste it in complaint. Stand beneath it with Our Lady and remain faithful to Jesus. Offer this duty through Mary, without seeking notice, so that it may belong more perfectly to Jesus Christ.

How shall I imitate Christ today?
“Then shall a good clean conscience make us more gladsome and merry than the cunning of all philosophy.”
At judgment, appearances will fall away and the soul will stand in truth before God. Learning, reputation, and skill have their proper uses, but none can replace a conscience purified by repentance and kept faithful through obedience.
Do not seek peace by avoiding examination. Ask the Holy Ghost to show you every matter that remains unsettled: sins requiring confession, injuries requiring forgiveness, restitution that can be made, or duties repeatedly postponed. A clean conscience is not sinlessness claimed by pride; it is the peace of a soul that refuses concealment and returns to grace.
Today's Practice
Settle every matter of conscience that can rightly be settled today, and prepare definitely to bring the rest to Confession.
Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Return the completed day into Our Lady's hands. Ask her to obtain pardon for its faults and to preserve whatever grace bore fruit.
