The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
As Advent prepares the Church for the Nativity, the Immaculate Conception displays God's victorious preparation of the Mother of the Redeemer. Ask for hatred of sin, purity of heart, and readiness to receive Christ.

Sunday belongs first to the worship of God and the commemoration of the Resurrection. Adore the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, from Whom every grace descends and to Whom the whole Christian life must return.

Protect the day from unnecessary servile work and give God an unhurried period of worship, doctrine, or spiritual reading.

Advent does not ask for a vague feeling of expectation. It summons the soul to clear a road for the King by repentance, recollection, and faithful duty. Ask Our Lady to show you what within the heart still refuses room to her Divine Son, and begin removing it today rather than waiting for a more convenient hour.
Place every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation into the hands of Our Lady, asking her to present the whole day to her Divine Son.
Formation in True Devotion - Day 1: The Hidden Way of Advent
“It was through the most holy Virgin Mary that Jesus came into the world, and it is also through her that He has to reign in the world.”
God did not choose Our Lady because He needed assistance from a creature. He chose her freely, and by that choice He teaches us something about His own order: the Word came to us in humility, hidden beneath a Mother's heart, and He wills that pride should not prescribe the road by which grace reaches a soul.
You may desire the reign of Christ while still guarding some chamber of life for self-will. Bring that guarded place into the light today. Ask Mary to receive it, not as its final end, but as the Mother appointed to form in you a more obedient welcome for her Divine Son.

Offer the day before spending it
Prayer gives the day its right beginning and its right end. Before work, conversation, news, or distraction claims the mind, adore the Blessed Trinity and offer every prayer, work, joy, suffering, and temptation to Jesus through Mary. Ask your Guardian Angel for help, and place the souls and needs entrusted to you beneath God's will.
Begin simply. Make the Morning Offering through the hands of Our Lady. Pray the Three Hail Marys for purity and final perseverance, ask your Guardian Angel to govern the senses and imagination, and name the soul or intention for which today's prayers and sacrifices will be offered. Do not rush these acts merely because they are familiar; let them place the whole day beneath God before the world begins to claim it.
O Lord Jesus Christ, awaken me from spiritual sloth and, through the hands of Thy holy Mother, prepare my heart for Thy coming.

Pope St. Gregory the Great, Homily 1 on the Gospels
“He telleth us what will be the evils of the world as it groweth old.”
- The Breviary opens Advent with the second coming of Christ, so that desire for Bethlehem remains joined to holy fear of judgment.
- St. Gregory teaches that the convulsions of the world are permitted to wean the faithful from worldly affections.

“Look up, and lift up your heads, because your redemption is at hand.”
Let Our Lord wake the heart without terrifying it. He asks you to look up, not because the world is calm, but because redemption is nearer than fear admits.

Advent begins with judgment, so that hope may be sober and watchful.
The passing world is not the measure of Christian expectation; the words of Christ do not pass away.
This Gospel corrects a danger that can quietly deform Catholic judgment: The sleepy presumption that time belongs to us and conversion can be delayed. Ask where that danger seeks your consent today, and answer it with the act Our Lord requires.

Remain here for a little while. The purpose is not to gather another fact, but to allow today's Catholic truth to judge the heart, strengthen the will, and become an act offered to God.
The Church places this truth before you today: The Roman Primacy exists to guard, confirm, and govern in the apostolic faith; it is not license to create another religion. Do not hurry past it as though doctrine belonged only to books and controversies. A revealed truth is also a light by which the soul must judge its loyalties, its fears, its habits, and the duties immediately before it. True authority is recognized by its service to the deposit of faith, not by bare claims severed from Catholic doctrine.
The grace to be practiced is Practice vigilance: simplify disordered attachments and return to recollected prayer throughout the day, drawn from today's Gospel. Ask God for more than the natural appearance of this virtue. Temperament may make an action seem easy for a time, but supernatural virtue remains faithful because God is worthy of obedience, even when feeling offers no assistance and no one notices the cost. Ask Our Lady to form this virtue in you by teaching you her humility: she received every gift from God and returned all glory to Him.
There is also an enemy to recognize: Resist confusing the office Christ instituted with commands or claimants that attack the faith the office must protect. Do not study this danger only in other people. Look quietly for the door by which it seeks entrance into your own soul - perhaps through delay, curiosity, resentment, human respect, attachment to comfort, or the desire to control the outcome. Dying to self today means choosing practice vigilance: simplify disordered attachments and return to recollected prayer throughout the day when pride, comfort, fear, resentment, or human respect asks for control.
Do the faithful act and entrust its fruit to divine Providence, God's wise and loving governance of all things. Place effort and outcome into Our Lady's hands so that the whole offering may be presented to her Divine Son. Confidence in God is not passivity: obey, pray, work, and accept that visible success, consolation, or immediate relief may not be given. God remains faithful when the duty is hidden and the outcome uncertain. Therefore, perform the duty that belongs to you, use the lawful means God has provided, and then surrender the fruit. Do not carry the cross alone or waste it in complaint. Stand beneath it with Our Lady and remain faithful to Jesus. Offer this duty through Mary, without seeking notice, so that it may belong more perfectly to Jesus Christ.

Formation in The Imitation of Christ - Day 1: Book I - Amendment of Life
“Wherefore, if we will have the true understanding of Christ's Gospels, we must study to conform our life to His life as nigh as we can.”
The Gospel is not given only to inform the mind. Grace asks that the life of Christ become visible throughout your conduct today, with particular attention to the virtue shown in the appointed mystery.
It is possible to admire Our Lord while quietly refusing His manner of life. Ask where He is inviting you to become more patient, hidden, truthful, obedient, or forgiving. Conformity begins when admiration accepts a cost.
Today's Practice
Before today's decisions, ask: How does fidelity to Christ govern this?
Before Night Falls
Return the completed day to God.
Give thanks before measuring the day by feeling or visible success. Ask light to see faults without discouragement, make an Act of Contrition, forgive injuries, and place tomorrow beneath divine Providence.
Return the completed day into Our Lady's hands. Ask her to obtain pardon for its faults and to preserve whatever grace bore fruit.
- For what grace or mercy should I thank God today?
- What sin, fault, neglected duty, or resistance to grace must I confess?
- What definite amendment will I carry into tomorrow?
Go Now, Pilgrim
Walk faithfully. Pray attentively. Bear your cross willingly. Love God above all things.
When this day is finished, may you have laid one more stone in the City of God.
You do not walk alone: remain beside the Blessed Virgin as she leads you toward her Divine Son and the Heavenly Jerusalem.
